    Pretty good deal!

  • Would have prefered MX150 GPU. Oh well.

      • +1

All this is true but what a lot of people don't seem to realise is that mobile cpus/gpus can be throttled using a wide variety of methods such as time, sensor temps, speeds, scaling etc - meaning there is a wide variety of performance regardless.

Ocassionally some models come along where you can bypass throttling which usually makes them a lot more useful for gaming since non-gaming orientated devices will usually throttle GPU heavily with sustained performance like 3D gaming eg, MS Surface aim a fan at chassis.

So which party should I vote for?

      • what about the xiaomi laptop with that chip? works great for me

        • Similar price, but with Xiaomi, you won’t get any warranty though.

        • The xiaomi laptop is using older cpu 7200u(dual core) compared to this 8550u(quad core).

        • @OzSikh: I meant the mx150 performance on it

        • @tomkun01:

Unfortunately Xiaomi uses the 10w lower wattage chip: "Xiaomi uses the slower MX150 GPU for the Mi Notebook Air and the Mi Notebook Pro, but the latter is equipped with a higher clocked version".

          https://www.notebookcheck.net/Nvidia-has-been-sneaking-in-sl…

What's interesting is that they are using that same chip in their 15.6" Notebook Pro also. So there's now confirmation that the MX150 10w chips are making their way into notebooks larger than 13".

        • @c0balt: so if I could find a way to unthrottle it, it would perform even better?

xiaomi just announced a gaming laptop. i think it has a 1060 and it'll be over $2000

        • @tomkun01:

No it's a different chip with a 10w TDP limit. You could try overclocking it using a program like MSI afterburner, but it will run into a power delivery limit well before the 25w chip would for the same clocks. Just make sure to pay a very close eye on temperatures and system stability also if you want to test it out.

For a 13" ultrabook it makes sense to minimise heat output as a 25w GPU chip in something the size of a macbook air along with an alright CPU would be ~40wTDP (very different to say a Macbook air with just an U series CPU for a total of 15wTDP).

It's not like Xiaomi cheaped out. It's the same with all 13" ultrabooks that have the MX150. Probably a thermal dissipation limit where they would need to make them thicker/heavier to accommodate more heat pipes, more or better fans and space the components further apart if they wanted to put in the 25w version.

Yeah it looks really nice, but for the price I can't help but think the pricetag will turn a lot of people away as they are not known for gaming laptops and reliability is unknown (along with no local warranty/service centers).

        • @c0balt: yea the price is nuts.

i have an older gaming laptop that bluescreens a lot and the nvidia card just disappears from the system. it gets really hot. desktop all the way next time…gaming laptops are just too unreliable. that being said, my xiaomi air is great

Dude you just copied what I wrote in another thread literally word for word and didn't credit me.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/369228

        • +3

          Well thats awkward.

        • full unreserved apology shortly

        • +2

that explains why he didn't understand my question

  • Hey guys can anyone help me out. Whats the better choice this or the zenbook flip?

    • +2

Depends on your usage. It has double the amount of storage than Zenbook flip, currently on sale at Bing Lee

On the other hand, ZenBook has a touchscreen

    Here's a review of exact ver https://www.ultrabookreview.com/16539-asus-vivobook-s510/

I was very tempted, it's a great deal if only mx150 tho..

      • I wish it wasn't so late at night to have to decide on these kinds of things >_<

      • +13

You copied it word for word from another thread, it's not your comment lol!

      • +4

        Not your comment. Own up.

      • I'm surprised you want to highlight the comment you stole considering it makes you look like a weasel.

Thanks for your advice OzSikh - sold.

    • It actually was member cobalt's.

Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's.

      • lol

But, he was referring to the advice, he asked for in PM to me.

        • Okei we're cool bro :)

    • Did you receive your order ?

      • Yes, I received it but there was a dent on the lid, so waiting for a replacement.Very happy with their customer service so far.

        • Can you please if it has a finger print sensor ?

        • I put it back in the box when I saw the dent, so didn't open the lid. Could someone please confirm re:finger sensor?

  • +1

Great post OP. Now just when I am about to order the T580… Hmm this price is tempting, but then the other is T-series Thinkpad. Decision decision!

    • +2

Buy the Thinkpad. Asus reliability is a joke compared to a T580.

      • Thank you. I needed to hear that :)

      • +1

I second Thinkpad t series (especially s). Personally, been buying almost exclusively x and t series Thinkpads for nearly 20 years, to the extent of now owning a museum of fully operational laptops up to 15 years old. Yes, they all still work.

One of the reasons I stuck to Thinkpads is that work Dells, HPs, Toshibas, … were always a bit worse by comparison. The key Thinkpad (only x and t series!) advantages were keyboard, battery life, coolness and cooling noise and weight. Typical disadvantage was screen brightness and resolution (they deliberately used low power screens).

Also, don't forget support, even if I needed it only once, and that to replace an underperforming WiFi card. Software updates are regular, and after market parts are easy to find and cheap to buy.

        Hope this helps.

        • Certainly helped. I totally agree with you. My last laptop was the T560, which I sold cos I'd like to upgrade to the 8th gen quad-core Intel.

          Thanks for sharing 😍

Would have been a great deal if this was not 15.6" screen :(

    • +2

The ASUS VivoBook S15 fits the panel of a 15.6” Full HD display into a typical 14-inch laptop frame. This is possible due to the ultra-narrow 7.8mm NanoEdge bezel that gives it an incredible 80% screen-to-body ratio.

      • Yeah still, low battery, noisy and plastic build.

I'm looking for reasons not to buy this and it has a fair few :(

It's still a great price for a good laptop if someone is content with low battery life, noisy fans and doesn't mind the plastic build. Everything else is solid for the price, and this would suit a lot of users.

        • How "low" is the battery on this one? Its ad says long battery life lol.

And plastic build? I thought it's aluminium!?, which is the norm for ultrabooks nowadays.

        • @sky blu:

          3-5 hours, and it's plastic

          From the ultrabook review:

"if you’re in the market for a thin-and-light 15-incher and don’t want to spend $1000 on it, this Vivobook S15 is your best available option. It’s a nice and practical laptop with a decent IPS screen, a good keyboard, proper IO and fast hardware. Of course, some corners were cut in order to meet the budget requirements, and the two most important ones are the averagely built plastic main-body and the small 43 Wh battery. If nitpicking we could also add the mediocre webcam and the fact that the laptop gets warm and noisy under load, but that’s normal from a thin computer."

        • +2

@deathjr: Thanks. I feel much better now about my decision to buy the Thinkpad.

        • I almost pull the trigger in this one. Cheers for saving me.

        • T470s has two batteries inbuilt and they last pretty much a regular working day. Funnily enough, that's my new work laptop supplied by the company. Good.

        • @mrau: how is it funny?

        • -2

"Would have been a great deal if this was not 15.6" screen"

        • @sky blu:
It's the first time I got a Thinkpad from the company I work for, and my latest personal laptop is basically the same t460s

        • @mrau: Coolies. T-series Thinkpads are good arent' they. It'll be my second one, and that is after having considered other brands and models for over a month!

  • 2kg….and only avail in gold….

Still prefer the zenbook although a lil more expensive.

    • +1

      It's 1.5kg

      • +1

Can anybody confirm the weight as I understand there are many variations?

On the binglee page under additional information it shows 2kg with battery.

        • My mistake

  • oh I wish I didn't buy the inspiron 7000 from ebay deal. gtx1060 on that dell is overated, screen only 60hz anyway, blows like a jet when playing game

    • +2

But the GTX 1060 is a very capable graphics card.

  • +1

Great price for specs you get on paper.

  • +1

No more available - out of stock.

  • +1

Fought off temptation on this. Holding firm for a good Stealth Pro 1070 future deal!

    • As did I but against the Xiaomi Notebook Pro I7/16GB to cheapen up a little more in the next 3 months

      • +1

Staying power! Hold firm dear boy!

  • +3

Just a few points after buying this…

    • NO FINGERPRINT SENSOR even though advertised as having it (I bought instore at $1199).
    • No HDMI 2.0 (only 1.4) so max video output is 4k at 30Hz (no video out over usb C either).

    BUT!

Comes with 2nd Hard drive caddy already installed so very easy to add a second 2.5" drive.

Very fast machine. Very little fan noise. Good value!

    • +1

2.5" HDD caddy is inexpensive. Why didn't you complain about No Fingerprint Sensor?

    • NO FINGERPRINT SENSOR even though advertised as having it

Why didn't you complain about No Fingerprint Sensor?

  • Ordered and paid at midnight for pick up, and when I tried to call the store this morning they were totally dismissive and said "wait for us to contact you, THANK YOU sir" and hung up. Nothing heard all day. Bit shite service!
Did it really have no fingerprint reader? it's in the top right corner of the mousepad - I cannot see any evidence that they make a model of this without it!?

    • I suggest take screenshots of their website, where they have advertised it. So that you can you use that later just in case.

  • Yes, this model doesn't have the fingerprint sensor. If you look at Bing Lee's website under manufacturer specs it says Fingerprint: N/A. However the info above that says it does! Anyway still a very good deal.

    • Well the sh*tty Chatswood store never called me, and my order ended up cancelled. Shame. I won't be trying to buy from Bing Lee again, dodged a bullet.
