For those who missed out on their previous deal. Only $14.95 more for the i7 but without the eBay coupon this time. Still $1998 at Harvey Norman. The other 2 deals also seem to be by far the cheapest available anywhere in Australia.

  • Your description is wrong - the 15" laptop has 16 GB RAM not 8 GB.

    • +1

      It says "8GB *2 DDR4 DRAM", which = 16GB. I just copied/pasted from their site.

      • +1

yeah technically correct, but a but cryptic.

        • +3

"technically correct" ie the best kind of correct! I've edited the description to make it more obvious.

I've never owned an Asus laptop. Is build quality good?

    • +3

Not sure about new devices, but I bought 2 for 1 about 7 years ago. They're still running. One has a broken hinge not by it's own fault.

I also had an ASUS Phone, was bloatware when I bought it but they kept supporting it with updates and ended up being a good phone.

I don't like their routers, I've had 3 and they all have some connection issues that can be worked around (may be firmware rather than hardware)

      • Yeah, I had trouble with hinges one them years ago as well. To be fair, my wife kept dropping them, but, hinges still don't normally break on other brands. They have probably fixed them up a bit since then though (this was about 8-10 years ago).

        • +1

Hey, I didn't want to say it.. but I had one and my wife had one, it wasn't my hinge that broke. :D

    • +4

Yes, Asus is reputable for build quality

    • +2

Yes, ASUS is a reputable brand especially their laptop range.

I am replying your comment using an Asus VivoBook which is about 6 years old. Still good and solid and running smoothly.

    • Build quality is great as is usability.

However, I bought this back in Aug last year: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/331418 and despite me treating it well, and not dropping it or banging it around, there is a small crack on screen now. Will be seeking replacement under warranty processes.

    • Yes their build quality is great. They make all the reliable motherboards in the custom PC segment. Their Zenbook line of laptops are excellent as well. I recently got their Zenbook UX430UN and it has been great.

We now need them on Bing Lee's eBay store and 20% off Bing Lee on eBay to get the real value for money :)

    • Legit. Waiting for this.

      • agree. anyone work for binglee here in the ozb? please load to ebay. cheers

        • They had a listing of the i7 flip on eBay but took it down before this sale went live, so I doubt it.

    • +3

The odds of that happening in combination with no price jacking are pretty much 0%. :p

        Your Quick Maffs is impressive.

Nice catch! I stopped looking after not finding the other 2 in their eBay store. Updated the post.

    • I tried the code but unfortunately for me it says the code expired. :(
Do you recommend I wait for a few more days to maybe potentially get another 10% off code or bite the bullet and buy it now ?

      • The Bing Lee deal has a set expiry date so I guess you could always wait to see if something else comes up. Worst case if it doesn't you can just buy off the Bing Lee website before the sale ends

    Why the 940MX when MX150 is available…

    • +5

Because the 940MX is a lower wattage chip (and about 30-40% slower for gaming) but both are almost equally as bad when compared to the next model up the 1050. So why not save on money and battery life when neither are suited for gaming beyond 720p medium/low.

50% faster of a low number is still a low number.

      https://www.notebookcheck.net/Comparison-NVIDIA-GeForce-MX15…

Then there's also the fact that most of if not all the 13" ultrabooks that contain the MX150 actually have a 10w variant of the chip (less than half the 25w spec) which makes it potentially much slower than the 940MX.

      • +2

Why would you just not get one without a graphics card at all then?

        • +2

          My point exactly.

        • +5

Video editing - having a dedicated GPU for CUDA/OpenCL rendering. Even a small dedicated GPU can make big difference to render times (depending on codec(s)/effects) and playback performance especially when effects are applied to the footage.

The same can go for software development, CAD, 3D modelling and more. Educational programs and simulators like MATLAB can use the extra grunt from a dedicated GPU for kids at school or university.

Then there's also for playing older games or newish games that are not demanding.

But yeah, if you have no need for a dGPU then you will save money and weight by getting a model that doesn't contain one.

Just ordered the Lenovo E580 with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. If I have waited, I could have ordered this 15.6" Asus S510UQ pointed out by cletusb, which has double the amount of RAM and SSD. Both cost about the same.

    • +1

I would have picked this one over my E480 as well, also better weight and screen size.

  • Cheers. Managed to get Harvey Norman to price match the Flip in SA for $1,439. Pretty happy with specs for price.

  • Even cheaper on their eBay page with code P10EASTER, comes to $1,091.10 delivered

They have jacked their eBay price by $300!!!
    $1,499.00.

  • Does the i5 version of the Zenbook Flip have pen support?
Also, where would I be able to find a pen for the Zenbook?

    Cheers

    • +1

The specs on the Bing Lee website says: Supplied Accessories: Carry bag + Stylus
I'd imagine the Stylus is the Pen.

      • Cheers, must have missed that.

  • I just contacted them via live chat. I ordered one on 29/3 but they Tell me they are out of stock and on back order. Estimated wait is 2 months. Anyone else have better luck?

    • I’ve been watching the package tracking and Aus post haven’t received it yet. Will contact them tonight and see what’s going on

      • Ok so I checked the tracking and it literally just updated after I posted above. ETA is 9/4. Purchased on the 31/3 Asus zenbook flip 24

        • Maybe it’s locaion based? Im in Melbourne.

          got an email saying

“It’s with regret that we need to inform you that we will not be capable of supplying you with the ASUS - UX461 ZenBook Flip 14 Notebook - I7/1.8GHZ - 16GB - 256GB SSD - 14"

Unfortunately due to a system error we have over sold for this model and will not be able to supply this item within a reasonable time frame.

At this stage, we are looking at May/June delivery just to fulfill your order.”

        • @yiubun:

I'm in Melbourne too. I bought the i5 version so that's probably why.
I'd ask for a refund if you don't want to wait.

        • @drasticdan: thanks for the update. I’ll just wait a bit and see if I can get anything at a better price point. If I cant then I’ll request the refund. Harvey Norman is still selling the i7 for $1998.
