  • This is not the new iPad.

      I know, it's iPad 2017..

      • +6

and the new one is 'only' $599 (128)

        • How significant is the difference?

        • +6

          @baldur:

A9 vs A10 processor & supports the expensive Apple pencil.
$569 at kogan too. edit: actually not sure on this kogan price. says latest model then 2017.

        • @Zandz: Cheapest you'll find that's not a overseas model.

        • @Zandz:
I'm considering buying an ipad but i think I'll go with cellular data ones as I'm planning to use them on trains mostly?

        • +1

          @baldur:

Plenty of reasonably priced hefty data plans now too. Cellular might be worth it.

        • @Zandz:
          Thanks man.

        • @baldur:

Actually check with who ever your phone is with, I picked up 3 2017 cellular models late last year (20$ per month) through Telstra as a kinda in house offer to existing customers. When I reconstructed last month they offered me another one as a bonus on some of the higher plans. I’m pretty sure Optus have some thing similar to this running at the moment too.

        • @baldur: I'd suggest checking you'll have a decent data reception first….coverage along some train lines (in Sydney) is horrible:)

        • @Kiato:
I'm with kogan mobile, so I better have a look. Thank you.

        • @noono:
Oh yeah, i couldn't think of that but yeah you are right i think.

    • This is not an iphone.

  • +3

I bought it for $499 at officework a few months ago. Why it more expensive than before when the new iPad was launched?
If it is with cellular will be a good deal.

  • +3

There is a Logitech Crayon coming, and I have to say Pencil/Crayon support would be great for the kids. So for the difference, I’d got for the new, new (new) iPad.

    • -6

Children will not good marks unless they have an ipad and at least 100Mbit internet.

      • +12

And they won't spoke proper either…

      • my son’s school uses windows not apple , but he likes his ipad as he can face time his friends, do mathletics, control his lego midstorn, …. with the facebook and google saga time cook is feeling very comfy about apple and not selling customer info …… privacy will be a bigger issue now for parents and young kids with devices.

he doesn’t have a mbit connection but he did get in the top 10% for his naplan tests.

    • yeah my son’s ipad is 16 gb and getting old (5 years) ….. he will get the new 32gb one and grandparents can buy him the pencil at christmas. they use windows at school but he likes ipad for his tablet.

apple store has stick, jb said try next week.

    • I just saw the price of the pencil. $145 @ JB.

  • +1

2018 iPad would be a better deal IMO.. the ability to use Apple Pencil (or similar) is why I'm going to be looking for iPad deals this year after a 6 year hiatus.

  • Worth noting they have the 32gb for $399.

Just picked one up earlier today, limited stores in Melbourne have the stock

    • who has the new one with 32 gb for $399 ?…..

      • To clarify it’s the now “old” one that’s for $399

  • A10 ipad much better no point getting this

    • Better at what exactly? They are always better. The Iphone X from last year with the A11 will forever be better than this A10 but are you really 50% off better at watching youtube, playing fortnite or using excel on this tablet?

      • it's the mindset that has android users chasing the snapdragon 625, but next week outcomes the 635, or may go with the 820, etc, etc. based on CPU numbers instead of functionality based on processor and software working as a system, not individual components.

      • Faster CPU/GPU. If you want to play Fortnite, then the new 2018 iPad is better. Web pages will render a bit faster. Apps will load a bit faster.

Also, Apple Pencil support. It doesn't hurt to have the ability to use it. Also, being A10, you will get one more year of iOS update compared to A9 based devices.

Generally, if you really want to buy the previous gen iPad, it is unwise to buy the one with extra storage. We are talking about $80 difference.

      • Don’t forget AR

  • -1

But it's not a laminated display

    • +2

if display isn’t laminted then it’s $25 plus labour for a new digitiser if you crack the screen, laminted is much more expensive to repair.

i’d rather a thicker ipad that is cheaper to repair than a thin one that is more expensive to repair.

      • +3

You could save more money if you don't drop it.

        • +2

no one intends to, but shit happens.

Do you buy car insurance? You could save a lot of money if you just don't get into accidents.

        • @lostn: That's a joke, buddy. Get over it.
April Fool's Day, and you're so serious.
          Thanks for the neg

        • @Trio21: No it wasn't. And I did not neg you. I'll prove it by giving you a + vote, but will be revoking it in 24 hours.

        • @lostn: Seems I can't revoke a + vote after 1 hour. So, consider it your lucky day.

  • Will be interested on how the Apple Pencil performs feedback wise on the display considering the screen isn't laminated.

    • shouldn’t be an issue, the digitise is in the top glass layer.

    • +3

It works fine, about 38-40ms latency for Apple Pencil.
If you're on a budget and use apple pencil casually, go for it.
However, the iPad Pro 10.5 has a laminated display with anti-reflective coating, true tone display, and 120hz refresh rate, half latency (20ms) for Apple Pencil.
New iPad Pro coming in Q3.

I told my tinder date I got iPad and she said she was gonna stay overnight. Then I told her it's 2017 version she never replied back.

    • don’t worry, it’s like flaired pants that come back into fashion every few years ….. the 2107 ipad will make a comeback and be in vogue at some stage….. one day the ipad 2017 will be the new black.

  • Does anyone know if I can get David Jones to price match this even though the iPad is categorized as clearance on Officeworks website?

    • Looks like you can. The David Jones Price Promise only bans clearance outlets, not clearance items.
