  • When ever I purchase from Zapals, my credit card statement shows the Paypal transaction in AUD and an extra International fee right after.

    • +1

Use 28 Degrees or another card that waives the fees.

    • Many credit cards charge an international transaction fee regardless of currency, rather it's based on the country that the charge is made in. At least pay in USD (on both the Zapals site and in Paypal) if you don't have a fee free credit card as mentioned above, as it stands you are paying in AUD using lesser exchange rates and still getting charged a forex fee anyway.

Select USD on Zapals site first, then when paying on the Paypal transaction screen: Select "View currency conversion options" under the exchange rate. Then select "Convert with card provider".

You'll still get the 3.5% charge from your bank, but at least you won't lose out paypal an extra 3-6% to zapals/paypal for using their lesser exchange rates.

      Example:

Buy something for Zapals US $100 in USD on Zapals and PayPal. Your bank charges you AU $129.50 + 3.5% fee from bank = Best solution
Buy something for Zapals US $100 in AUD on Zapals and Paypal. Zapals converts US $100 to AU $132.58. You pay AU $132.58 + 3.5% fee from bank.
Buy something for Zapals US $100 in US on Zapals but AUD on Paypal. Paypal converts US $100 to AU $134.20 + 3.5% fee from bank.

Of course if you get a 28 degrees or similar card you can just pay US $100 = AU $129.50 and no 3.5% free from your bank for foreign transaction. Alternatively some banks like AmEx will only charge you forex fee if the transaction is in foreign currency. In the above scenario you could pay AU $132.58 by using Zapals exchange rates and no 3.5% fee would apply, but of course 28 degrees is still the better option as you can both pay in USD and avoid foreign exchange fee.

      • 1 more scenario I thought of. Add sufficient credit into the paypal account first to avoid the credit card transaction.
