"Australia's favourite beer will honour its commitment to shout the nation with a free can or stubby of VB for every eligible adult in the country.
It was meant to be a celebration for winning the Ashes, but the good people at CUB have rightly seen that we need it anyway. We promised to shout the nation at the start of the Ashes campaign, and even though the boys didn't win, that's still what we are going to do,'' VB group marketing manager Paul Donaldson said."

  • +17

Free Scanned Coupon - No need to buy newspaper!

Reading through the terms and conditions it doesn't state you need the original coupons; only that "online redemption" is not allowed which I take it to mean buying it online. So print the coupon out and you can go to any store and get it for free.

      Here's the scanned coupon

    love it:
marketing: "let's look really Aussie and give them a beer when they win the ashes, they always win, it will be a great promotion/marketing exercise."

    cricket happens

    Marketing: "crap they lost…"

  • +9

Alright fess up, who were the idiots that voted VB Australia's favorite beer?

    • +22

You're asking in the wrong forum…they can't use computers! :p

    • +1

favourite as in sales volume not as in a boutique beer that is tried once and thought is quite nice but is too expensive to buy regularly.

      • +2

Alright then, who's the idiots that keep buying this beer in such volumes that it becomes coined 'Australia's favourite beer?'

        You people disgust me.

  • -5

I can neg it - VB says its "shouting the nation"

last time I looked NT/TAS was part of australia

    • NT/TAS don't count…they are only shouting the cool parts :P

your view is valid but i don't know if your neg is…

  • Nobody drinks VB cos its crap. Everyone has moved to more sophisitcated beers like Superdry or Extra Dry!!!

    • lol…extradry?

    • +3

It's called VB in case those who drink it need to write it down.

      • Great for a beer butt chicken!

    • Lol yeah wouldn't be calling Extra Dry sophisticated, its cheap run of the mill shit.

    • HAHAHAHAHAHA Extra Dry "sophisticated" omg lol

  • +4

saturday morning get the paper + free beer/angry juice sit at the table and tell the wife to cook me some eggs B*@#h.Priceless pitty its not a long neck though would work so much better

  • So everyone here seems to be against VB beer. As I'm not a beer connoisseur, I have to ask, what are some good beers?

    • +3

      Jack Daniels !

    • +5

      James Squire Golden Ale….yum

    • +2

      anything in the Monteith's range

    • +3

All the hipsters (the ironic people who talk quickly and like to be alternative even though they are all the same) enjoy incredibly expensive cider - they must use all their parent's money to get them?

    • +2

People will recommend this and that but I reckon the majority of people are swayed by perceived marketing of the beer and price. I've been drinking different types of beers for years yet in a blind taste test I doubt I would be able identify a Carlton Cold, VB, Crown, Tooheys or Boags Premium (as an example). Personally I like dark beers especially when it's cold as they are rich in taste (White Rabbit or a Guinness). In hot weather, the Carltons/VBs are good but particularly like the Japanese dry beers as they leave a watery aftertaste (Saporro, Kirin).

      • mmmm Asahi

You can vote VB the best beer in Oz,

But Asahi Dry is possibly the best beer on the planet!

For your regular beer for weekend BBQ drinks - Carlton Pure Blond

Something 'upmarket' and fantastic beer - anything James Squire. (Pale Ale is my Fav)

      • Coopers have become my draught staple. I'll always try the new beer on the tap if there is one and talk to the barman about it, but otherwise I'll return to a Squires, Fat Yak, Little Creatures or Coopers.

    • +1

Out of the beers I've drunk — Carlton, Hahns, Tooheys and VB, VB was actually my favourite.

    • +2

Monteiths Golden Ale, Little Creatures Bright Ale, Sapporo, Yebisu, Bluetongue, and Coopers Pale Ale (leave the Yebisu and Pale Ale for the colder months) IMO. First four are more expensive, last two not so much.

      • This man has my vote!

I grew up in Adelaide (yeah yeah I know…), so I grew up drinking Cooper's Pale Ale, it's still one of my favourites but sadly it's a bit pricey in Melbourne (which is where I had the common sense to move to). I once visited Little Creatures brewery in Freemantle though (I travel a lot), and… well, the rest of the day was a bit of a blur but their own ales are fantastic. :)

Pretty much every beer you just listed I'm a fan of.

However at home, my girlfriend likes Toohey's Extra Dry, so I'm usually drinking that, or Chang (a Thai beer).

My dad makes me drink Cooper's 62 whenever I'm visiting them though. :)

But VB? That's what all the maori's in queenbeyan drink!

      • I'm right with you on the Little Creatures…their Pilsener is a nice, refreshing drop too! Try to find somewhere that has LC on tap, it's a different beast when it's out of the cage! ;)

Last few Sapporo's I've had have been a bit ordinary…dunno if they've changed the brewing process or something? The Bluetongue Alcoholic Ginger Beer is a bloody good drink too, especially when you can find it on tap somewhere! :)

    • I'm a big beer snob. My favourite beer is the Belgian beer Kasteel. Hard to find in australia (Belgian beer cafe in brisbane sells it), but the best place to look is probably the international beer shop in perth: http://www.internationalbeershop.com.au/

      My other favourites:
      Gouden Carolus: Classic and Ambrio
      Delerium Tremens
      Chimay Blue

BUT: If you're just getting into beer, a very good starting place is Franziskaner. It's a german beer with very nice flavour, and you can pick it up in 500ml bottles or a 5L keg (for $35) at Dan Murphy's. If you buy in the bottles, i'd suggest pouring it into a glass to drink, but pour it slowly. It can get VERY heady.

  • Is that all liquorland in NSW?

  • +11

If you dont want to drink it grab to cook some beer battered duck or fish.

    • +1

      Good idea!

  • Sick of hearing beer snobs complain about VB. It is a nice beer on a hot summers day. Not the best but not the worst either, its an aussie classic.

    • +2

No, it's pretty close to the worst alright! Filthy stuff, right up there with XXXX for mop-bucket taste…conversely, Tooheys New, which actually is an Aussie classic, is still cheap yet smashes this slop for flavour any day of the week, and thrice on Sundays! :p

      • I'd definitely place tooheys new right down at the bottom of my list, along with locally brewed Heineken.

Seriously, when Nathan Lion took over a lot of leases when fosters where clearing capital (to buy up southcorp wine division I think it was), they tried to switch out calton draught and switch in tooheys new in its place.
It lasted all of a few months before the downturn in profits were so bad that in most hotels/clubs had to bring CUB back in as first pour. Drinkers spoke with their wallet.

TED's and TED platinums are the only 2 in the range I'd drink, and standard TED's only if I weren't buying.

That said, VB is only slightly higher than New on my list.

    • +2

      Nah, it's shit.

    • I know someone who actually works at the carlton brewery. He tells me when a batch goes bad, it gets mixed into the VB line. eugh.

      • cough bullshit cough

        • pretty sure he was joking!

  • +1

I sprint up to 6 hours a day sometimes up to 40 degrees heat, and there's no secret i drink 5L of VB

    • +2

That sprinting would be to and from the bottlo if you're drinking that much beer daily! ;)

      • +2

        and the toilet….

Who would whinge or say neg about free beer?
    Is this not Australia?

All the fashionistas and ponces were drinking Corona with a lime twist in the Eighties. Me, I don't care about fashion…
Have drunk beer all over the world and still love an ice cold Veeb.
My favorite beers, based purely on taste are VB and Asahi, so I am happy :)

    • +2

      +1

Not interested in making a fashion statement with my choice of beer. I've tried many and I keep coming back to the taste of VB. Can't beat it on a hot day.

Also agree that Asahi is a great Japanese beer.

      • +1

VB tastes terrible to a lot of people plain and simple. People here aren't knocking it because its a fashion statement to be seen with VB, I couldn't care less what people see me drink (1).

My dad drank it all the time when I was 17-18 so it was always in the fridge but despite the offer of limitless free beer I only had one can before realizing that I'm much better off stealing his spirits instead.

        (1) Statement does not apply to Emu Export.

I came to this thread for the free beer, and stayed because of all the great comments

  • -1

    This is a serious question.
Where does it say anywhere that they will give out a free stubbie for exchange of a coupon. For all I know the coupon could say free stubbie with every 6 pack or slab purchased. That is still technically a free stubbie and "shouting the nation" also saves whoever makes VB's behind.
I'd say this should be better of in the forums, until confirmation of an ABOSOLUTELY free stubbie.

    • ow its 1 free beer made by Carlton and United brewery owned by Fosters

You really do have an ability to dig up random things. Amazon reviews, istockphoto pictures and now this. It really amazes me :)

  • Haha News Ltd paper (i.e. Herald Sun) + beer, good combination. Won't work if the paper is any more sophisticated.

  • +2

Seems to be a bit of confusion re VB vs Tooheys.
    Let me help.

    Sydney is a great town.
Tooheys is the beer of choice in Sydney.
Sydney is also one of the great gay cities.

Logical conclusion: Tooheys makes you gay.

    Nothing wrong with that, mind.
Could be useful if you are joining the navy, know you are a pretty boy going to jail soon, etc.
    Skol. ;p

    • You seem to have in depth knowledge of the Sydney gay lifestyle KT! Tell us, when you come up for the Mardi Gras, do you know it's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A? :p

Young man, young man, are you listening to me?
Young man, young man, what do you wanna be?

      • Lol.

Well, every time I go to Sydney, I try Tooheys again. Careful to have only one or two though.

Pretty sure it does something to the butt nerves.

        • Well, it is a muscle relaxant! ;)

  • I was reading the other day that apparently, this time of year, we're consuming 100,000 slabs a DAY of the stuff.. that just blew my mind.. 100,000 SLABS.. thats 2,400,000 cans a day!

    • +3

Most of it in the Northern Territory hence the exclusion from the offer :)

  • +1

VB is crap but +1 for free beer =)

  • +1

Looks like the newspaper industry won't be closing soon if they keep up with such nice marketing.

"It is estimated that tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption account for 93% of all drug-related death and illness."

Let the negging (of this comment) begin!

    • -5

I agree with that. Down with institutionalised alcohol consumption.

    • How can you neg. the freebie?
