Good deal. Using the red version of this phone right now and it's great. No lag and good battery. Camera is average at best and the built in photo viewing function from the camera app is awful as it seems to display photos in a much lower quality and resolution than the image actually is. Fixed by using another app but kind of annoying.

    • Google Photos?

      • Unlimited
'By pairing Xiaomi's advanced camera app with unlimited high-quality storage on Google Photos, we've created an unparalleled end-to-end experience. Shoot, alter, instantly upload, and share. All with a single tap.'

        • True, but I was asking about urzu's default photo app. If the resolution is lower, chances are it's Google Photos that's making it low res because I think by default you view the photos uploaded there, and not the local copy.

        • @flaminglemon:

          Ahh I see ;)

      • That's probably the API that's being used for showing the photos from the viewfinder, yes.

I just installed a seperate gallery app to easily browser screenshots and photos.

    • +1

by reducing the image quality it can retrieve and render it faster, lots of other apps will display at at the phones native 1080p, which is still lower than the res of a 12mpixel image.

Title says 32GB storage, but specs below say 64GB. Note that the link goes to the 32GB version.

    • Thanks, fixed.

    • +2

if you are going to use dual sim, consider the 64GB version unless you are happy with 32GB and you can run single sim and an SD card.

  • Can you install something like Samsung secure folder, knox or Miui second space on this device?

With 6X/A2 now released these prices on A1 are too high. Will wait for prices on the A1 to drop below $100.

    • +4

You think the A1 is going to drop below $100 AU?

      • how much is the A2 ?

        • +4

There is no A2 announced as of yet. The 6X variants are roughly $315-$400 US for preorder on most Chinese websites.

        • @Clear: ah I see, thanks for the clarafication mate. There's alot of websites referring the 6X as A2 though

        • +3

@mty: That's because the A1 was originally the 5X rebranded with stock Android. The same will likely happen to the 6X.

You get more sales if you say it's the A2.

      • -2

What I'm saying is that with 6X/A2 now available, $200 for the old model doesn't seem all that great. Remember that A1 was selling for $280 about a year ago when it was new.

        • +5

That is true, but I think saying $100 was an unrealistic figure.

    • +1

the model be end of production before it drops to $100. They free up production line space for newer models with more demand and higher prices.

There are base costs which can't be escaped or reduced, cost of shelf space, support, transport, packaging, invoicing, etc and profits are higher if the phone in that box sells for a higher price.

The android market and competition for forcing a new model every 12 mths (in each manufacturers segment, eg flagship, mid range) is making lots of phones end of manufacture quickly.

      • Price reduction of obsolete models relies on the popularity of the model… I doubt this one will drop much, if at all.

    • -1

The A2 hasn't even been announced, and $100 is a stupid pricepoint for this phone.

  • Not sure whether to go for the A1 or the redmi 5 plus? Both seem to have pros and cons. Has anyone bought from this mob and can give a realistic shipping time if it's likely to take a month I would rather pay a bit more for local stock?

    • +3

I bought the 5 plus in the aliexpress sale and it only just got shipped. (a month later)

They screwed me around with stock and colour issues, but I sucked it up because I got it for $230 after everything. Reviews say the camera is slightly better and it's got a much bigger battery and higher resolution screen.

      • +1

Yeah that's what puts me off buying from overseas stores don't think I want to wait a month or so unlike the cheap items I have bought in the past. The bigger battery and screen of the 5 plus or the USB c, android one with the A1🤔
The camera really bother me and in one comparison video I watched the cameras on the 5 plus looked better.

To be fair, I have a max 1, max 2 and got a note 4x for the wife a while ago and all have arrived in reasonable timeframes. On the max 1 and 2 I paid for express shipping and had them under a week.

What happened here is they advertised it despite not actually having stock.

        • @knk:

Also I wouldn't be too fussed on Android One. While I would prefer a stock android experience, MIUI is well built and has a handful of nice features. There are some gripes with the way it handles battery management but those are easy enough to work around.

    • check Ebay, got my son the A1 for $250 , 64GB, said local stock, came express HK in 3 days by DHL …..

Had a moto G4 from DWI ..it arrived and was new, can't recall how long it took so must have been more than 1 week. was all OK …. as always Xiaomi don't make AU charger …. grey from any manufacturer means no AU charger.

    • +1

Get the A1, it's Android One so gets you out of the Xiaomi software roadmap which isn't as rapid as Googles …. love Android One OTA.

    • +2

One of the major reasons to go for the A1 is because of the Android One (stock android with support for 2 years officially). Putting in custom ROMs can do the same thing, but the fact that it's coming from Google themselves is why people buy the Mi A1

If you don't care about it much, then i suggest that you should go with the phone with the lowest price. I had the Redmi Note 4x and it was a beast especially with customs ROMs in it (LOS is really good). Considering the Redmi 5 Plus is better, i'd probably go with that one if i were you.

      • +1

I don't have an issue installing a custom rom I currently have lineage os running on my s4. Would the extra ram make a noticeable difference in the A1?

        • +2

Not really tbh. I mean going from 4-6 gb isn't a big deal unless you're doing hardcore graphics related stuff (which most of us don't do). Even going from 3-4 gb isn't much. Ideally 4 GB ram should be more than enough.

This code works for the LG G6 H870DS, which becomes $480. I still don't know if this is a deal, but pretty sure its the cheapest its been in a while.

  • -4

    It has NFC

    • You mean xiaomi A1?

I don't think it has NFC

    • No it doesn't.

  • Any suggestion for cheap NFC phone with good software update?

  • Already expired

  • These are still available for $212.40 with the code, which is decent still
