Great for vodafone users who dont require band 28.

I dont really understand this whole band 28 stuff? I bought a Redmi 4 prime/pro with no band 28, and 4G worked perfectly fine on Virgin Mobile and Optus. Is there something else I'm missing?

      • +2

Yes. You're missing Band 28, which is one of the bands that Optus and Telstra use. It's a low frequency band that's better at penetrating walls.

You might find you get bumped down to 3G when you're indoors, or if you're out in the country, you might lose reception altogether.

To be honest, it's not that big of a deal for me. I've been using a Redmi Note 3 for years, and I don't care if I get bumped down to 3G. It's not like I have to watch videos all the time on my phone while I'm out.

        • Ok. Glad i'm not the only one with problems relating to low frequency, poor penetration followed by a bump down.
          Thanks!

        • @sharkfan12: yeah my son complains because in some places his xiaomi drops out and doesn’t have coverage (rural) or drops to 3g ( city and urban) my LG stays on 4g.

3g vs 4g isn’t an issue for people who aren’t heavily into video, we have 60gb data plan so he hammers you tube but he doesn’t do social media.

I've recently got one of these phones. I'm with Aldi mobile aka Telstra, so I was interested to see what difference not having band 28 would make.

I really haven't noticed any difference with reception. Seems to be just as good as any of my previous phones that have had band 28.

  • Anyone who owns this phone, what version of Android are you on? And are updates via OTA?

    • +1

I don't have this, but I know some people who do. Yes, updates are OTA. One of them just got this last week, and straight away, it asked her to update from Nougat to Oreo.

Just know that you're not going to get Project Treble with this. Hold out for the A2 if you can.

      • This assumes that the A2 will get Treble, and that it will make any realworld difference given this is an Android One device.

        • +1

Actually, yes. Good point. Forget Treble then, MysticalWok. This one is still a good buy.

      • Thanks for the information. I'm debating whether it's worth getting the Nokia 6 (2018) a phone which is also an Android One device that has NFC/64GB/Quick Charging and B28 lol. The downside is that it costs around $120 more than the A1.

        • Nokia's have great SAR ratings, if that matters to you.

If not, the Mi A1 has an IR blaster, which I find incredibly useful on my Redmi phone.

      • the way of the future if google have their way is the handsets are made by companies and google does the software. This would mean buy the handset with hardware the features that you want and you know the software support you will get.

If A1, had NFC and band 28 it would be ideal for the Australian market with Android One software support.

I'm on 8.0.0 with April 2018 security update.

Yes, updates are over the air.

    • android 8 and it gets OTA updates .

  • Not sure what this mob is like to deal with but they have 64gb version for about $10 more. https://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/xiaomi-mi-a1-dual-s…

Looks like $25-$50 shipping, depending on your location

Bought one hopefully it won't take too long to get delivered.

I bought one direct from DWI a few months ago. Ordered in Thursday, arrived the following Monday. From Hong Kong.

  • Bought after canceling my order with those halfwits at Shopmonk, who have had my money for a month and no phone shipped, let alone delivered. Abysmal experience filled with lies. #neveragain
