1440p and 75hz…… This is literally my perfect screen.

Not IPS, but VA is at least a hell of a jump from TN.

    • +2

VA generally has better picture quality than IPS/TN due to superior contrast ratio (~3000:1 vs ~1000:1).

      • +2

Contrast ratio yes. Picture quality no.

Apart from black IPS has better colours.

IPS also has a much better viewing angle, so the colours look better wherever you watch from. And the response time on IPS is faster than VA.

        • Contrast ratio = Picture quality (pretty much)

Contrast ratio, put simply, is the difference between the brightest a TV can be, and the darkest. More so than color, resolution or other aspects of picture quality, contrast makes the difference between a good- and a bad-looking image.

          https://www.cnet.com/news/what-is-contrast-ratio/

This VA model has a 5ms response time which is around the same as IPS. Yes IPS has better viewing angle but that's not going to make much difference if you are sitting directly in front.

        • Contrast ratio is an aspect of panel quality but very different to colour reproduction and all other picture quality measures.

Even sitting directly in front of a non IPS screen the colours can vary a lot depending on your height, the angle of the screen and even as you slouch/sit up.

        • +1

Yes I understand there are several aspects to picture quality. My point was contrast is the most important. This is why all the top LCD TVs have VA panels.

As long as you are sitting directly in front of the screen I don't think viewing angle will be an issue. VA has a wider viewing angle than TN.

        • Since it's a gaming monitor, I'd take IPS glow and lower contrast over VA ghosting. Of course these are potential problems, since not every panel is going to have bad IPS glow or ghosting, but all things being equal, IPS glow is less annoying than ghosting.

The contrast difference between IPS and VA only really matters if you're used to the ratio of VA panels already (in which case you probably already know which panel type you prefer).

IPS viewing angles are a nice bonus for people like me who recline way back but can be fixed with monitor arms anyway.

If your use case is movies then VA is better, and if it's colour accuracy intensive work then you want IPS, but then you're probably not looking at monitors with Freesync/Gsync anyway.

        Very much no.

why AOC, why, no vesa support.

You can buy third party VESA adapters by searching for the model number. Amazon recently had them for $50.

I use this screen as a secondary display, it has a pretty bad flaw in that it takes many seconds - how many changes from time to time - to wake up from low power state. The power light changes but the screen stays blank for many seconds, sometimes over 18.

    • +1

if it had VESA mount points i would have 2 of these but search continues here for >27 inch 2k monitor under $300

  • +1

Everyone got to be noticed this monitor has no speakers but is a good one actually.

    • It has speakers according to Windows.

      • +9

It has no speakers but a headphone pass through.

        • You just need one of those 1-inch passive speakers which runs off the headphone jack directly.
I'm sure one of those gearbest-like sites will have them.

    • +12

      Monitor Speakers O_O

      People use them?

  • How are the viewing angles on this?

    • There is colour changes at the edges of the screen when I sit about an arms length in front of it because of the angle to the eye.

It's not that pronounced, it doesn't immediately jump, out at you but it's noticeable.

    • If viewing angles are important to you then go with an IPS panel.

Bought this monitor last time there was a deal on it and absolutely love it.

    My recommendation is to follow this guide here;

    https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/aoc-q3279vwf/

Follow the settings they recommend and the colour accuracy is quite surprising and it's decent for gaming. I had to go into my NVIDIA settings to make sure it was running @ 75hz instead of 60.

    • Is ghosting and viewing angles as bad as people say?
People on YouTube comments etc say it's not that good for gaming.

      • +3

        Not in my opinion.

I use it for uni, work, Netflix, YouTube etc.

Gaming I use it for CSGO, League, Overwatch, PUBG, Fortnite. No dramas. I'm no professional but for the price it seems fine for me. I've never used one of the higher end refresh rate monitors however.

        • +1

I've also never noticed an issue with viewing angles personally. Although mine is sat perfectly in the middle of my desk and I'm usually only slightly off to the side of it.

        • @adamfury: Thanks mate exactly what I would be using it for.
          What gpu do you use?

        • +1

@Lockster: I've got a relatively outdated MSI variant of the GTX 960 6GB.

Can run a few games at 1440 but on lower settings.

        • @adamfury: Wow! Does pubg run @1440p?

      • I got this monitor last week. In my opinion the ghosting is as bad as they say, it's like a permanent motion blur on bright objects with a darker background. I upgraded from a cheaper/smaller aoc and it didn't have this problem. That said it doesn't bother me too much, you get what you pay for and the monitor has been great otherwise.

I used this website to test out the overdrive setting https://www.testufo.com/ghosting but it didn't really help, the strong setting introduces a bad halo and negative image.

Here's a picture I just took running the ghosting test https://i.imgur.com/W49cEoW.jpg
That's with the 960 speed and default monitor settings, the picture accurately portrays the ghosting trail I can see on my screen.

        • Thanks so much mate I'm still deciding whether to buy or not…

        • Just out of curiosity are you using OverDrive settings?

        • @adamfury: Is your ghosting as bad @adamfury?

        • @Lockster: I have had no issue I might run a ghosting test since I've never run one before!

        • @adamfury: Sweet send a pic!

        • @Lockster:
Here's a photo taken at the 480 pixels per second speed https://i.imgur.com/xGQSLyD.jpg. I'm taking these pictures manually tracking the screen with my phone camera, so the image of the ufos are obviously much sharper in person, but the amount of ghosting is the same.

Also notice the lighter bands on the lower 2 tests that are also visible.

I've played Doom on this monitor for about 4 hours and the ghosting hasn't bothered me much. But I played a platforming game that it was very obvious in. I'm happy to answer any questions about my experience with this monitor.

        • @adamfury:
I find there isn't a whole lot of difference between, off/weak/medium, I have it set to weak. Strong looks pretty awful though.

        • @bestcake: Any chance you could send some game play of doom? Would be appreciated. TIA

        • Not sure if I've done this correctly but I just opened it up and snapped a photo on my Pixel 2.

          https://i.imgur.com/EV0eICr.jpg

        • @adamfury:
The camera should probably move with the ufos, it's hard to tell which is ghosting and which is a result of the each frame being captured in a different position during the exposure.

        • @Lockster: I tried but I'd need a better camera to record the monitor properly. In Doom I can't even tell the ghosting is there unless I'm looking for it though.

        • +1

@bestcake: That's all good, Do you reckon it would be a good upgrade from a 23" 1080P IPS monitor?

        • @Lockster: For me coming from a 21.5" 1080p TN it was a no brainer, I'm especially loving the extra screen real estate when I'm working on audio projects.

  • This price is priced like a TN display!

    Hate VA panels.

    • +11

      Care to explain why?

  • +1

    Some things about this monitor.

You can get 75hz with an nvidia card, just need to create a custom profile in the nvidia settings
    No speaker
    No USB ports
    No VESA Mount
    No tilting support.

They remove all these features to get a good performing low price monitor. I personally dont use any of those above downsides.

    • but does it have height adjustment? looks like its still in stock.

Guys this monitor retails for $299 at other computer stores, so hardly a genuine 20% sale. more like 6.5% off.

    • they do this… they had a gtx 1070 on there for $912 with the %20 discount which comes to about $20 below retail (~750)

    • price jacking during ebay sale

is that a surprise to anyone here anymore?

  • Can someone suggest a good gaming monitor that is about 21.5 to 23 inches? Not too big but good response rates for MOBA games LIKE CS:GO, dota 2 and fortnite?

    • +1

What price range? I have this and highly recommend it, but if you want 144Hz and/or 1440p/4K are needed then you'll need to spend a bit more.

  • May I ask those who have this monitor how they find the text crispness (compared with, say, a typical 1080p IPS panel HP/Dell that everyone has at work)? I tried a 1440p 32" Samsung VA monitor at HN the other day, and no matter which PC it was hooked up to, text was awful (inconsistent, jaggy, the works).

  • My monitor arrived today. After some testing this is what I found. Keep in mind I'm comparing this to a smaller, more expensive 4k monitor:

    • text is rubbish. Even after tweaking everything is jaggy and annoying

    • colour reproduction is sub-par. With some tweaking the colour looks alright but it's either yellow or blue washed. No way to get a decent white

    • resolution looks horrible. Not sure what it is but no matter how I tweak it the resolution looks like 720p. This is probably due to it sitting next to a 4k monitor and it being so large

    • with overdrive on low the ghosting is so horrible that I felt physically ill. With overdrive off there is still enough ghosting to cause some motion sickness on certain games

    • Spent some more time tweaking. Managed to get the colour looking pretty good. Still has a bit of motion blur problem but it's pretty tolerable.

Have you tried the steps in the link?

        • Yep. Went through all that. Didn't help so I played around with my own settings. Eventually I got the colour right and it looks good now but there's still many issues. I tested it with the UFO ghost testing page and no matter what overdrive settings I use there's still very bad ghosting (it actually seems like changing the overdrive setting does nothing)

It also has an odd shimmer effect where you try to read text around the middle of the screen and it's very hard to focus on. I take back my part about motion blur too. I tried some fast pace FPS games and nearly threw up. I play a lot of VR and I've never had motion sickness before but I get it with this monitor. I'm half convinced it's just my monitor as it's a very annoying effect. You try to focus on a centre point and everything to the edges of your peripheral vision is slightly shimmering and almost disappearing.

        • @GunnerMcDagget:
What's your take on this monitor now, after 1-month use?
I am also interested in this monitor.
My main use would be coding, you mentioned a problem with text, is it resolved after few tweaks?

  • I bought this monitor. Noticed that the white framing is pulled away as the from the main frame. I've emailed PC.byte
