  • Hi, I’m sure it’s been covered in the past but can you let me know which budget gaming video card can be used on this? Thinking of getting it for my kid

    • GTX 1060 3GB I bought it for $240 very smooth on 1080p.

      • +4

LOL, you can't fit a full size 1060 in SFF

You will need a 1050ti low profile and also it will only fit in the PCIe 2.0 x4 slot, not the PCIe 3.0 x16 slot meaning you lose 5-20fps depending on the game you play.

        • Ah yeah see if it is possible to change the case and new PSU.

        • +6

@superforever: That defeats the purpose of having a SFF case then…..

        • +5

that's only in the 9020 versions, the 1050ti fits in the x16 slot in these machines

        • @Homr:

Of course but $179 for that CPU, 4GB and SSD Drive and Windows …

        • @Calmago: oh really? Dammit, I should've got the 9010 instead :(

        • @Calmago: Can I swap the i7 4770 in this one? or is the motherboard too different?

        • +1

@Homr: No, i7 3770 is the best you can use on this motherboard, it's only 5~10% slower than 4770 though.

        • +1

          @vita:

I’ve done this very swap with my 9010. Had an i7 3770 from my old build, swapped it in and it’s running like a dream.

        • @superforever:

Which case did you change to? I have a 9010 and would like to move to a normal mAtx case, but the power button and front panel are non-standard, and there would be no back cover for the connectors, as it's not using the standard size io panel. I assume I could 3D print a rear io panel, but the front usb connectors would be tricky.

        • @vita: Do you know if the SFF or desktop model use the same motherboard as the minitower models? My optiplex 9010 minitower died and there's no more on ebay :(

    • -3

I'm wondering the same thing. Can this setup handle a gtx1080 in terms of compatability (will it fit? Will the ram/CPU etc work with a 1080?) And power consumption (will the PSU have enough to supply the GPU)?

Not looking to game do hard gaming. Just have a spare 1080 that I might stick in there for mining here and there and light gaming.

      • +5

no, low profile cards only. E.g 1050ti low profile

        • Thank you

    • +2

You've got to get the Optiplex Mini Tower if you want to get a full size GPU in there. And then you've got to cut out the hd caddy. I did this a year or so ago for my kid. You also need to upgrade the PSU.

      • P.S my motherboard and cpu died tonight :(

        • +1

May be just motherboard, CPU die not so common.

        • @superforever: That's what I thought, but I swapped the cpu with another pc. It didn't work in the other pc, and the new cpu didn't work in the optiplex.

  • +4

I run one of these at work. Has a couple of USB3 ports front and back.
There is room for the SSD and a HDD. Mine runs 16G RAM.
I run 2 27" monitors at FHD without an extra Video Card.
    Been rock solid.

    • yeah, the ssd makes it tempting, 4GB will barely run windows 10 if you run office but some extra ram and it it's a cheap way to get a PC, 1080p screens are a dime a dozen now, heck even if all you want to do is back up your 64GB phone at home and watch Netflix ….. cheaper than the laptop option and you can expand with an internal drive.

    • I'm thinking of using one as a home theatre PC.

Can you comment on how much fan noise they make?

      • Ultra quiet when idle, it has 3 fans. Great machine.

      • +1

Android media player with Ethernet and USB hard drives is the way to go imho. They're cheaper, have wider hardware decoding support, smaller profile, faster wake from sleep timing. Get one with 4K HDR output support and H265 decoding and you will be set for ages.

  • +5

Really good deal, I'm struggling because I don't have any need for this… to ozbargain or not.

    • +3

same …. only consolation is next deal might be 4th or 5th gen I5 and 8GB ram for an extra $100 …..
It's great if you have kids, they get office 365 from school already and can load it at home (it's within the license), and a desktop is nicer to work from than a laptop.
My son already has a 2nd gen I5 with 1TB SSD desktop to supplement his school laptop.

  • Any USFF?

  • if i'm looking to pick up a basic computer for my mum - office suite, internet surfing etc. will this do?

Do i need to upgrade anything (e.g. RAM) beforehand?

    cheers

    • +3

It would be ideal, great bang for the buck. Just install Firefox browser when you get it.

      • +9

        I'd recommend Chrome browser

        • +2

Firefox Quantum is actually very good now, I'd switch back to Chrome if google didn't have such vertical integration with all of their services with the browser.

        • +1

@azukay: Firefox Quantum has nothing on Google Ultron

        • @ozbargainer88: just have to make sure you update Adobe Reader first or the browser won't function correctly

    • This would be perfect as is.

  • They just come with Win7 sticker, however how do I get the serial key if i change hdd in those?

    • If reinstall Windows 10 doesn't matter it will remember your hardware, if Windows 7 you will need the key are you sure no key on the sticker?

      • if as part of the refurb they have factory reset win 10, it will ask you for your Microsoft account and then it's all yours.
Win 7 extended support ends Jan 2020, so only 20 mths left.

    • The windows 7 sticker with have the product key on it

  • looking at past history of this 9010 SFF, seems this is a hard to resist!!!

  • how much does it cost to upgrade the ram?

    8gb or 16gb?

    • you would go to 8 by adding a 4GB stick ….these are DDR3 so you don't want to over invest.

If TGG were GG they would let you go through the PCs in their recycle area and you'd get the RAM for nothing.

I keep a screw driver in my briefcase, on the way to work if people have thrown out a PC I check them for RAM.

    • +2

DDR3 4GB ~$30 2nd hand, there might be compatibility issues, so buy 8GB is a better choice. the more the merrier.

    • I bought a 2nd hand 8gb ram (2x4gb) for $39 off ebay. Worked perfrectly

    • At the bottom of the listing there's a link to upgrade ram to 8GB for $55 ,
So at check out should be $228.60 with todays 10% off

  • +1

So is Windows 10 activated on these or do they only have a key for 7?

  • -4

Only 4GB, so add the $50 for upgrade. $230 total.
Especially with SSD, you don't want to be swapping RAM - it kills the drive.

Lots sell with 8GB, and you want 8GB just to run chrome these days.

    • +4

what do you mean by killing the drive?

      • +1

They're implying that you will wear out the SSD using it as a virtual memory page file. In truth, you won't, and by the time your drive starts to wear out, you won't care because it will be worth nothing.

    • What do you mean by this? You don't recommend buying a 4GB stick of DDR3 and putting it in here?

      • They mean you dont want to be using your SSD as swap space. You DO want to add more RAM if using hungry programs on this.

    • +1

lol wow? most ridiculous thing I've read all morning!

    • SSD lifespan is so exaggerated. Nothing to worry about unless you plan to write PBs to it.

      • Your mobile phone would be long gone if it's so weak.

  • Any computer expert know if this will play 1080p Youtube? I want to connect to my TV

    • It will run 1080p Youtube for sure. I think you can do some light gaming on this as well

    • It shouldn't have any trouble with that, I've done that on an ancient system far older than this? I would expect it to run 4K too?

    • +1

Get a chromecast. This is overkill for YouTube.

      • I disagree. Chromecast is $70 for the same quality streaming. This does many more things than a Chromecast.

        • My first Chromecast is only $20-$30

        • @superforever:

Which was great, I have one myself.
But you can't really by them anymore you have to buy the newer expensive ones.

        • @Spooderman:

Why? For youtube 1080p shouldn't be a problem.

  • +2

    What's the SSD?

  • This is a very good pc to install nas4free software and becomes a nas.

  • Why is there still an option for pickup yet you tell customers you don’t allow pickup for eBay orders?

  • +1

I have a Dell Optiplex at home with a GTX 1050 Ti inside, it's not low profile though so I can't close the case but that's not a problem for me. I got the GPU very cheap second hand so I don't mind it :-)

  • +1

ehhh. the i5 4570 with 8gb ram and 128gb SSD was the sweet spot. 4gb ram doesn't cut it these days

    • +3

I guess is cheaper to upgrade ram than SSD?

      • Easier too

  • can you dual boot linux on these dell pc's? The bios etc isn't locked down or has some other weird setup right?

Want to use one of these as a plex server with plexdrive so I need to install a linux OS.

    • +2

Dell corporate PC's will allow you to install Grub and boot to Linux. You might have to fiddle with the safe boot and UEFI settings in the BIOS IME.

I booted my work Dell laptop to Ubuntu for a while.

      • Great, exactly what I'm after.

        Cheers.

    • I boot to both linux and OSX on mine.

  • Are these also ATX compatible like the the I7s 9010 you had where you said they could be put in another case?

    • The motherboard is fairly ATX compatible wrt screw holes and power supply connectors, but the rear io panel doesn't have a detachable cover, and the front panel usb ports and power switch are non-standard, so you've have to come up with a solution to it. I tried googling about it and very few people have done it.

  • I know this is very NOOB question.

Would this play unknown player battleground? with some addtional hard ware?

  • Hi there,

Can I plug this to 2 x Dell 24" monitors? Can I use it to browse internet without the need to buy any extra wifi card? Thanks.

    • It said this so if you have VGA and display port on the Dell monitors.

Of course you can use it to browse Internet if you connect it to Ethernet cable.

Video Output VGA + 2 x Display Port
      Connectivity Gigabit Ethernet

      • hi, thanks for that.

Can I use it on wifi instead?

        • It doesn't come with WiFi you have to get a WiFi USB adapter.

  • How this would go for video editing?

  • Anyone know if this would be an easy hackintosh install? Been looking for a cheap desktop for it.

  • They even can't find a photo of 9010 model? because the photo says 7010, and with dvd as well

    • +1

The 9010 looks exactly the same, only replace the 9 with a 7, and they did comment "Just to note these do not have optical drives even though the generic listing picture has it." Anyway, they are sold out now, so not really an issue.

  • So because this doesnt have optical drive. Is this the extra space for another hdd/ssd? Or is there actually another space for ?

    • +1

Yes there is. Without the optical drive, you can fit 2xSSD and 1xHDD

      • Yep. 3 sata ports. One slim optical bay, one 3.5" bay with 2x2.5" adapter.

  • out of stock, wow!

    • There's plenty of sellers on ebay who sell ex-corporate pc's like this if you still want one.

      • I've got an optiplex 9020 and HP G1 800 Elitedesk myself. Just wowing because I'm surprised how popular these machines are.

        • Right.

Yeah they're affordable and generally in pretty good condition.

I just bought an i7 9010 optiplex to use as a plex server.

        • @yanni1: I bought one to use as my main PC :)

  • +1

"820 sold". That's crazy! OP care to show us a pic of the warehouse?

  • Does any one know if these Dell PC's can be gutted and put into a new case? Currently have an old i5 760 (running @ 3.8Ghz) and basically just want to take the motherboard and CPU out of these and put into my current case to run with my GTX 970. Figure it could be a cheap little upgrade as I already have 8GB of DDR3 but not much point if they're difficult to transplant to a new case, or run with a weird power connector instead of the standard 24 pin connector.

    • There are plenty of standard ATX to dell 9010 power adapter to mod your psu.

    • The motherboard is a strange size with non standard mounts, and even the I/O connection panel in the back might be non standard size iirc.

      • That’s what I was afraid of. Had googled and some people said they were fine whilst others said there were issues. Might have to give it a miss and keep the old 760 going!
