These will have no effect on viruses be warned. Most throat infections are viruses, the flu, colds etc. If looking for remedies for viruses, look for antivirus not antibacterial. Two different things. A virus is not Bactria, so is immune to antibacterial and vice versa.
That's my Science lesson for today

    • so which sore throat lozengers are anti virus? I normally get the Strepsils Extra as they contain anaesthetic so it numbs my throat.

      • You will need to research. I'm not sure exactly. Check with pharmacist

Cyanide ones stop you feeling it

        • @John Kimble:

there are none. Doc say gargle salt water (which just helps the pain & ease the swelling). anasthetics help with the pain.

Bascially rest & avoid alcohol & sedatives as you tend to snore with these which just irritates the throat.

Of course my many comments on here will attest to me igoring the avoid alcohol advice.

Well if you want to recover as quickly as possible, of course avoiding alcohol is optimal.

If you want to get toasty warm intoxicated several nights in a row, you can lesson symptoms at the expense of handicapping your immune system, which prolongs the duration of the cold. Personal preference IMO.

        • Is that because alcohol is a sugar that feeds the bacteria?

        • @EightImmortals: no it's your liver that converts it back to sugar I believe, well past our throat.

      • Norton.

        Duh!

      • pharm tech here - none

looking for remedies for viruses, look for antivirus

      Nortons or Kaspersky?

        McCafe always cures my viruses.

Must you really put your jokes in bold?

      • I thought jokes were supposed to be funny

    • These won't help fight a virus infection….but they will help prevent getting a secondary bacterial injection in your throat while your immune system is weakened. Which is generally why people end up sick for weeks… It's a cycle.

Not a doctor. Just my opinion.

    • Patient is coding! His throat infection is now really really really bad.

      Nurse, interferon… Lozenges. Stat!

  • As above, these are just a waste and will do nothing.

unlike most throat lozenges, these contain an anaesthetic

      • Yet they do not Destroy the virus, it just makes it more bearable

      • +4

Even if they don't kill off the virus, they do actually soothe the throat

    • +2

They numb the throat and do plenty.

    • +1

If you have a ticklish throat and feel the need to cough to sooth the tickle, these are great as the anesthetic numbs the throat and you don't annoy all the people around you with the single cough every 3mins.

    • As per other comments these are actually good for pain relief. Doesn't get rid of the sore throat but temporarily makes it feel better.

      That's an interesting brand.

  • Relief of a sore throat for the duration the loz is in your mouth.

Tea with honey better choice, save your 6.69

Difflam is a better product than this. Stepsils never really worked for me.

    • Me neither. I usually make my own with sugar, cloves, ginger, honey, lemon, cinnamon etc

      I'll give those a shot

  • Tequila works for me better than this stuff

  • I recently picked Betadine for a sore throat over Strepsils and it was pretty effective.

  • just would like to make a comment, (not to take anything away from the OP)

the DIFFLAM FORTE THROAT SPRAY is the best product ive ever used for sore throats.

    highly recommended!

Sometimes I found it useful to put one of these numbing lozenges near an oral ulcer and this helps to kill the pain.

    • I use a drop or two of Listerene mouthwash by using a pipet from the small medicine bottles, and it works a charm

  • Plenty in stock at Virginia QLD. Just bought one pack

  • +1

the anesthetic (numbing) in these are 3x as strong as any other lozenge on the market (including difflam ones).

however, they taste like garbage - so it's personal preference

also, the "sore throat" that anything like this treats effectively is when you have a "raw" sore throat - if it has anything to do with the glands in your throat, these will do nothing.
