  • Anyone know cheap installers around Sydney?

LOL. [I presume it was a joke :-p]

      Try this

      • Amazing, they are still here, sounds funny that Strathfield Radio only in Concord or Liverpool but none in Strathfield…

Try Autobarn mate. I got my Kenwood DNX9170DABS unit fitted at the one in Blacktown and it cost me 120$. Not sure about the other branches, but the guy they had doing the installations out at BT really seemed to know his shit.

Note: I did look on Gumtree before I went to Autobarn, but most of the quotes were pretty similar ($100-$100 vs $120). Figured it was better to go with the brick and mortar store in case there were any problems post install.

      • Thanks for the info. Did your unit have GPS too?

        • +1

The "N" in Kenwood's model code is the giveaway that it has built-in mapping.

        • Like @PinzVidz noted above, yes it does have inbuilt navigation as well.

        • @dsn7287: is the mapping better then Android auto

      • The installer is contracted by autobahn. Autobarn isn't legable for any issues with the install they redirect it to the installer

RRP on these is $1199, only just released so not bad to see Frankies do a bit of a discount on it. This model replaces the DDX917WS, major difference is higher resolution screen. Keep in mind this is 200mm wide, which is a specific Toyota size and direct replacement for most factory Toyota head units with partial plug and play (will fit some Subarus also). Aftermarket fascias with 200mm hole are available to replace most "integrated type" Toyota audio units as well (i.e. replace shit Toyota Link).

If you want a conventional 180mm double DIN width unit in similar spec, look at the DDX9018DABS.

If you are targeted, you could use the 10% off code on this tomorrow, assuming the price stays the same.

  • If this has just come out I wonder why we aren’t getting the wireless android head units, like the DDX9705S available in the US?

I will pay serious money if that was available to replace the terrible unit in my old Mazda 3.

    • Hopefully next year we'll see Kenwood wireless Android Auto head units here.

      • Could I just buy a US model now? Why wouldn’t that work?

        • You could but the radio might not work here properly due to different frequency steps. Don't know whether Mr Google will allow wireless AA to work here either.

        • @PinzVidz:
Ok, that makes sense. Warranty issues too.

A lot of these highly desirable features such as wireless android auto, wireless CarPlay might come in a future software update. Riiiight.

      • +1

Hopefully wireless CarPlay too. I won't be buying any of these units until they have wireless CarPlay. If Alpine can announce in Jan 2017 they've produced a wireless CarPlay unit, I would have expected the other brands to have had something ready to go at CES this year. But no. Rubbish.

        • Well, yes. Considering wireless CarPlay has been around a couple of years longer than wireless android auto it no doubt is some stupid control freak thing by Apple requiring its approval, if not a big fat payment. Tends to slow adoption.

But yes, I will buy a decent head unit when it has wireless CarPlay and wireless AA, and not before.

    • Had a terrible experience with my Kenwood DNX7330BT. Next unit will definitely be an Alpine!

      • +2

Alpine are just as shit. No aftermarket units have been decent for the last decade.

  • Many of the specs you've listed are wrong, see here:

    http://www.kenwood.com/au/car/visual_navigation/ddx918ws/spe…

It's also pretty underwhelming for a supposedly brand new device. No wonder Google is flogging Android Auto so heavily with these kinds of certification costs.

    • One or 2 of the specs they've listed might be referring to the DDX917WS (eg. HFP 1.6 was in 917, HFP 1.7 is in 918).

edit: OP has now updated specs.

    • i was going to say… bluetooth v3.0 is pretty old for something released this year. v4.1 sounds more like it

Why are these thing soooo much more expensive than iPads, despite being relatively primitive with the tech specs?

    • Small market. Not enough of us care enough to upgrade from the dreck the car industry give us.

  • This place already has free shipping without Coupon and same price.

  • Can it pair and mirror the android display every time car starts up ? I tried the demo at a shop and cannot seems able to do it

    • You probably could have your phone do so with an app like IFTTT
