  • anyone flown with this airline before? great price, but my expectations are low regarding service and cleanliness.. and safety?

    • I've done this route before.
Regardless of service level (Which wasn't as bad as some), for me it was the waiting times for plane changes that outweighed the savings.

    • The planes are pretty new and clean, but bring a netbook/book/games/etc as there is no seat back entertainment on the flights. They still have the old school central projector showing a movie.

  • The link doesn't work for me. Anyone else have that problem?

I flew China Southern domestic from Nanjing to Xi'An. Plane and service were fine, but it was definitely the worst inflight food I've ever experienced - dry noodles and a bag of pickled cabbage!

    • ROFL - luxury!

    • Lol I flew them Guangzhou to Shanghai few years back and the food was indeed terrible. All I remember of the food is fruit that tasted like cardboard. Then again I don't get on the plane for food. Plane I was on was very clean and new. And it was on that trip where I saw the most drop dead gorgeous flight attendant I've ever seen. :D~~~~

That's right!! All the chinese airline has gorgeous flight attendant, that is because they do not have that *** age discrimination law.

Call me old scholl but I still believe flight attendant show lookk young and pretty and think god most managers in a Chinese Airline believe that too. If you are not pretty or over 30 there is noway that you can stay in cabin unless you got some good connection.

Their food and in flight entertainment are terrible. its a give and take. I fly between China and Sydney very often. I personnally prefer hot pretty crew and bad food and moive over the old granny and just ok food of qantas and Cathy.

You're not paying for a lap dance. Comments like this are extremely misogynistic. I hope the attendants on your next flight are all male.

    • I flew them about 10 years ago, and I think the food hasn't changed. I recall some pieces of dessicated meat mysteriously encased in a plastic bag in a cardboard box, and rice of some description.

  • You get what you pay. This airline is OK. At least you won't be starving on the plane. If you value good service you would probably spend 600 - 700 extra.

  • Great price! China Southern i believe is the largest airline operator in east asia, it overtook Nippon last year i believe. I flew them to China last year and it was acceptable. The passengers can be rowdy (think Chinese restuant ambiance…well ok, not THAT bad) from Sydney to Guangzhou, but from there to Paris shouldn't be too bad. Safety standards are pretty high and strict in china so no concerns there.

Hahaha, shows how ignorant some people can be. Totally different airline, operates in different countries, totally different league.

    • +5

China Airlines is an airline in Taiwan. It is not at the same level of other Chinese airlines. Don't be confused. Just has "China" in its name doesn't mean it represents all the airlines in China.

      FYI Xeon

I quote "The Republic of China (ROC), commonly known as Taiwan, …"

thinks you ought to get a Core 2 Duo next time

      • Yup. I wouldn't want to be within a 10km from a China Airlines plane just in case it crash into me.
Like the others have said, completely different airline and not even in the same league. -tive for ignorance and prejudice.

    • China Airlines is based in Taiwan while China Southern isn't. They are two different companies based in different countries. Leaving aside politics, China Air was pretty unlucky as one of their planes went down due to a faulty repair conducted by another airline decades earlier.

    • +1

China Air might have a bad history but I doubt they are the 2nd most dangerous. Just look at the rust buckets that are floen in parts of Africa

      • Agree, I'd actually rate China Airlines above China Southern. Plus with China Southern, you must pass through immigration/customs in china and collect your luggage and re-check in.

Theres nothing wrong with both airlines safety wise, and they both have stopped using Russian aircraft and now are using modern Airbus' and Boeing's.

      • flown china airlines a few times. they're perfect, just below emirates and cathay pacific. better than qantas, but that doesnt say much…

This article is a bit, how to say … funny :

      http://www.news.com.au/travel/news/gallery-e6frfq80-12259555…
"It has had three major accidents in the last 10 years (one which had no casualties) and three others since 1980, including one incident in 1988 that killed nearly 300 people."

Now do a quick search in google :
"Iran Air Flight 655 (IR655), was a civilian jet airliner shot down by US missiles on 3 July 1988, over the Strait of Hormuz."

So apparently they are trying to blame a carrier for having their plane shot by US Navy 8|

ps I do not have any connection to Middle East, just found it a bit strange.

Yes I can vote TWO THUMBS up for China airline(taiwan airline) and NOT AIR CHINA… I have always had VERY DECENT food, absolutely efficient and courteous service, reservation and change of reservation is a breeze, follow up on customer complaints and enquiry within a few hours ALWAYS…. (By the way I don't work for China airlines just a loyal customer)

Diverting the point… getting back to China Southern, the food is terrible… even the drinks like juices and softdrinks were from China.. god knows what is in those juices and preservatives… so.. I only flew once it was from Fujian to Shanghai.. never again.. not even short distance, I can't imagine the trip long distance.. Service was ok..

BUT yeah.. it is good price.. but then you get what you pay for right?!

As long as the plane gets there in one piece and the seat is of average proportions for international economy, I'll fly with just about anyone. $1.1k to Paris is a fantastic bargain. If the food is stale bring snacks. I'm not sure why you're surprised that drinks and juices on a Chinese airline on a domestic Chinese leg were made in China :-)

    • Did you know China airline and NOT Air China has one of the worst air safety records? Just a thought…

      • Yes… took me a while to get over that idea… but hey when your time comes.. your time comes right?!

      • And Qantas had an amazing reputation until all those planes started failing over the past year…

You'll get issues with planes no matter what record the airline has.

  • I am not surprised.. I am just making a statement… that not many people realize what they are putting in their mouth with airline food… but then.. I am bias…

  • The link is not working?

    any cheap flights to US??

  • Would have been great on the Emirates :)

  • +1

Man I am so confused with the ramblings above…

  • I know it's a bit offtopic - and not as cheap as this - but I booked a trip with Korean Air for $1300 to London. We did need to spend a couple of days in Seoul to get it that cheap, but I considered it a better option than the even cheaper options.

    • hi swiney,
how did you find that deal with Korean Air ?
I am flying with them in a few months (have not bought tickets yet though) and just wondering what's the best way to find good deals with them.
      Thanks.

      • I looked up the prices to London via Tripadvisor, and they give open up the searchengines from Zuji, Expedia and JetAbroad. Korean Air at JetAbroad was the cheapest non-China Southern option (around $1450), and playing with the length of the stopover resulted in a lower price.

I could not find the deal on Korean Air (the site just refused to work at times), so I just assumed Tripadvisor wouldn't link to any random site.

        • Just booked a Singapore Airlines flight (departing end Feb) to London for $1645 via Zuji. last week. Three-month ticket. Pretty good deal.

    • Is it free to stay in Seoul? If it is not free how come this is a deal?

      • +1

Even if it is not free, it would cost you only $100 a day, which is quite reasonable + you can see around.

      • I think one without a couple of days stopover would be $1450, but that may include a free stay overnight since the flights aren't really connecting. We chose to stay longer, because we have never been in Korea.

        • If I recall correctly from when we did this route a year ago, the Korean air flights from Sydney to Seoul don't connect well with the flights from Seoul to London.

So Korean air give you a free overnight in a hotel that's near to the Incheon airport, and a free dinner there. We did this, and it was great - the hotel gets allocated on the day (presumably based on whichever one gives the lowest price to the airline that day), but the hotel we stayed in was very comfortable, large comfortable bed, with a large hot bath/sauna area that was great for relaxing cramped muscles after being in an economy seat most of day. It felt great to break that flight in two, with a morning flight from Sydney, arrive in the early evening at Incheon airport, have dinner, sleep overnight in a real bed, have no out of pocket expenses for it, and then resume the journey the next morning feeling refreshed. Very civilized.

What wasn't so crash-hot was the flight back from London to Sydeny, as this was just a standard straight-through connection. So we had a stopover in the centre of Seoul for 5 nights on the return leg, and saw the touristy sights.

If you were going to fly Korean then this seemed to me to be most enjoyable way to do it, and vary the length of the stopover in Seoul according to how much time you have. If it helps, we stayed in the Ibis hotel in the market area, and it was good value and well-rated on tripadvisor.

  • I clicked on the correct link and seems like it's all gone?

  • I lived in China for a couple of years. All Chinese airlines are safe and technically competent. Without wanting to cause insult, the difference lies in the obnoxious and poorly mannered passengers. Without word of a lie, I saw a woman battering a fish in the seat next to me on a domestic flight once. And what is with the everyone walking around filling up their two minute noodles all the time? Says something about the food. Novelty well and truly wears off after the first five thousand kms.

My tip - fly Korean Air, as Korean businessmen know how to STFU. If you get a stop over - hit the bath house in the Incheon Airport basement for a couple of hours - first class. For a longer stop over - Dongdemun district of Seoul is very colorful.
