$5 Per Month for 1 Movie Ticket Per Month, $7 for 2 Tickets Per Month (Billed Annually) (+ $10 Activation Fee) @ Sinemia

WinterSaleWatchCinemaWatchDeadpoolFamilySale

Looks like they've just launched in Australia but not much info about it yet. Currently supported cinemas are severely lacking in all major cities at the moment, no idea if that's just because they haven't added more yet. Does anyone have any more info?

Edit: I bit the bullet and signed up. I'm hoping that it would be easy to cancel if they don't add more cinemas given that their whole motto is "Any cinema, any time".

Edit 2: There are a lot more participating cinemas in the app compared to those on the site. Almost all the major ones from what I can see, more info in the comments.

Edit 3: Make sure you enter the coupon to see the pricing. The website does not always automatically apply it, sometimes the correct pricing isn't even displayed. Try again later if it's not. If (high) pricing exists for multiple days, mark expired.

22/6 Mod note: See this comment. Warning that users are being told to pay a $4.99 - $9.99 fee to be able to use the service immediately (despite the annual fee having been already paid).

31/7: Activation fee reported to be $10 in all cases.

      • Another limitation - if you're only on 1 movie per month, you may not get to see all the movies you want if there are several simultaneous releases. There's a chance that the second film might not be at the cinemas long enough for you to see it if you're limited to once every 30 days.

Amex chargeback will save us :D has no time limits (direct Amex anyway).

  • +3

FWIW, my opinion is that at $10 - $15 for a ticket at a major metropolitan cinema (discounted), you'd only need to use this 6 times or so to get your money's worth (3 or so if you're forced to pay full price for whatever reason).

My original reservations about it were the lack of cinemas, but as posted earlier it seems to work at a lot more locations than the website shows (not that this is a plus - as pointed out, probably most of the dev work is outsourced and so slow updates to the website is a thing to consider).

I'm also annoyed that the 2 member deal requires both people to see the same movie at the same time - you can't use them independently. Yes, I'm a nigel that sometimes goes by myself and has no friends to go with.

Anyway, just my $0.01 (OzBargain special).

    • You could save 1cent by having another person (the one you normally go with) having their own pass. Then you could just both book and check in at the same time, although that’d be a tiny bit more work it’d solve your problem just a problem if you have a habit of seeing movies with different people.

Just discovered another way to search cinemas on their "Sinema Social" site:
    https://www.sinemia.com/movies/avengers-infinity-war

Scroll down to "Search for showtimes", enter your suburb and then search. If it shows a cinema and session times I'm guessing it's a supported cinema.

EDIT: although, it could just as easily be showing publicly available showtimes for every cinema from some feed, like Google does…

  • Could someone please verify if Geelong Village cinemas is included?
I looked and it was listed but the map crapped out on me on my phone, something something Javascript.

  • +1

Hey Linton, Yes i have found Village Cinemas Geelong in the included list in the app.

    • Thanks, I appreciate it.
Still on the fence but is more tempting now.

  • What to use as Last 4 digits of SSN?

    • If this is presented in a popup window with password field, i just clicked on the cross in the top right hand side to close it.

It doesn't need this until you activate your card.

I did try a few 4 digit numbers but it kept complaining about my mobile number (which wasn't a field i could edit).

  • Seems like a great deal, but the site seems really poorly made and I'm a bit hesitant about paying a years' worth of membership up front!

    1) They've exceeded their Google Maps free API usage quota haha
    2) Site is confusing and generally poorly built
    3) What's the difference between the Classic and Elite plans? Why would I pay more per ticket for Elite plans?

    • 2) forget about the site, use their app
      3) Elite apparently allows IMAX/4D-IMAX seshes?

I too have my reservations, but I paid with my Amex which have an easy chargeback process if things go pear shaped, so consider it 0 risk to try.

  • +1

I am confused. Apparently, even their "classic" $4.99 promo includes a ticket to Imax when you look at the inclusions. These are the inclusions:

    Sinemia Premium Features:

    Any movie
    Any showtime
Largest network of movie theaters in the Australia
Buy tickets in advance, even from home
    2D - 3D - IMAX - 4DX - DBOX - ScreenX
    No blackout dates
Invitations to premieres, galas, and special events
    And joyful surprises

Although it is contraindicated in their T&C's:

A valid Sinemia Classic subscription entitles you to: (1) see one 2D per calendar day through Sinemia, according to your selected package; (2) see a 2D film title three times through Sinemia; and (3) a single seat, depending on availability, for a 2D film showing open to the general public. This excludes premium showings such as: IMAX, 4DX, XD and specialty theaters. Sinemia access is available every day of the week, subject to the theater being open, inventory, and usage.

    • Yup, the whole thing seems really shoddily put together. So confusing what's included in which option.

I can't really trust a company who can't work out what the hell they're offering…

      • I can't really trust a company who can't work out what the hell they're offering…

They're offering to part you with your $$ 😉

    • another great example of false advertising when/if chargeback is required ;) haha

    • Elite lets you do imax , classic does not

    • No contradiction, of course the classic excludes some features of the premium package

  • MoviePass in the US seems to be in a death spiral.

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/moviepass-parent-comp…

  • Cineplex is right next to me, $8.50 a movie or $6.50 on Tightarse Tuesdays. I love my Cineplex prices.

  • Trying to figure out whether Classic allows for:
    1) Hoyts Reclining Seats
    2) Hoyts Xtremescreem
    3) Event Cinemas VMAX

Also, if we book via the app, and then pay with the Sinemia debit card on the website, does it include any booking fees, or will that be an additional cost?

I've tried to go through the comments here but it's not exactly clear either…

    TIA

    It's a scam.

I signed up on the 25th of April, received my letter last Tuesday (07/05/2018). Inside was a fake "Mastercard" (no holograms, logo looks wrong) and when I tried to enter the card details I got a message that there was a problem with the card and a new one would be sent out. Why would the app even have that as a canned response?

I've emailed their "support" three times no with no response.

It's also listing independent cinemas that I have since spoken to and have confirmed they aren't a part of it, and it's showing movie times that are wrong. Today "Ready Player One" was shown in the app as being on at 12pm at Crown Casino. Crown has stopped screening Ready Player One. Jam Factory showed 3:15, the actual session time was 1pm.

I've contacted my bank to help get my money back.

    • I received the same error when trying to activate the card.

    • +1

      Total BS.

The card works fine. Their support is useless admittedly, but wow, "fake Mastercard"?

    • LMAO 😂

The fake logo you described is the new Mastercard logo. It’s “modernised”. I weep knowing when my cards get renewed I will have to have that terrible logo.

Works is Melbourne. watched two movies for $5 for only one month subscription which i signed up to a month ago.

just sign up again to the $15/yearly plan hopefully it works and they didn't just lure me into buying a yearly plan.

Real simple to use. Went to IMAX and village cinemas at crown. Haven't tried other cinemas.

    • Hey Michael, is there still a way to just sign up for a month?

  • I asked a question via their facebook message, It got seen and ignored. I have read some reviews and seems they lack in support?

    • Support is via help.sinemia.com

  • i once pay a ticket in advance in such a similar site and then found the cinema was closed down.
have to call in and get the refund.
i say this site is as dodgy.

  • +2

Any updates from ozbargainers who signed up to this deal last week as to whether or not it is legit?

    • Seems hit and miss depending on your luck.

      • +3

still waiting for the card to arrive.

        • Has anyone received the card lately? I signed up 2 weeks ago still not received

        • @b0b0: same here. Have you got yours yet?

    • It's definitely not a well organised business. No response from support. I paid for a yearly subscription, received a card within 7 days, registration would not accept the card. It's been almost 3 weeks and still no replacement card. My bank is in the process of getting my money back. Buyer beware!

  • +6

Signed up 10 days ago. Still waiting for my card.

  • +3

Was told by their twitter support that card sending is taking on average 2 weeks, think it's due to recent influx of signups, so it may take a bit longer to send, but they advise that an email will be sent once the card has been sent.

  • +1

Damn. I have been holding off on Avengers and Deadpool 2 waiting on my card.

  • +1

I've been waiting for 2 weeks for the card. Credit card was charged on 5th May. Today is 18th May. I contacted Sinemia through their crappy help.sinemia.com. After 3 messages sent over the span of a week, they finally reply saying it will take an unspecified amount of time to send the card. Email notification will be sent when the card ships. Subscription starts after the card is activated.

If the services doesn't begin until card is received and activated, why did they charge the credit card upon signing up? Is that even legal to charge the customer first and make customer wait for an essentially back-ordered item for an unspecified amount of time?

If the card doesn't ship in the next few weeks, I am contemplating calling the credit card company to complain.

    • I received my card within 7 days. Upon registration a message appeared stating that there was a problem with the card and a new one will be issued. I still haven't received my new card after a further 2 weeks. They have not responded to my queries. Bank is now conducting a chargeback. Hope your issue gets resolved soon.

    • +1

maybe they're charging new members without cards instantly so they can load the cards of existing members that actually have a card. kind of like a pyramid scheme lol

  • +3

    https://goo.gl/TYFFsR

I don't like the fact that if you don't check-in for your movie via the Sinemia app your credit card will be charged for the movie.

Most of the time I would forget to check-in via their app lol

    • Seriously? Wow.

      • +1

Somebody mentioned there is a 30min time period from the time the movie starts to check-in or else get a surprise credit card charge lol :) Maybe ill sign up but with a pre paid credit card if they bring back month to month subscriptions

        • Seriously that is some important info - lame!

        • @hamwhisperer:

Should definitely be in the main description .

  • Fwiw I signed up no card yet

  • anyone gotten their card yet? Signed up on 8th May and still nothing. Giving them by end of this week before Amex chargeback.

  • +2

So got my card eventually (card was sent to just the street address. No suburb, state or country).

Wanting to see Deadpool later tonight - figured I'd go into Karingal super early and book now to avoid holding up busy line later tonight.

Card didn't work on the app. Went into cinema and purchased ticket using card and it worked.

Couple of things I'm curious about.

    1) given my movie doesn't start for another nine hours, wonder if I'm screwed for not checking in.

    2) the cost of my ticket was $12 as I'm a vrewards member. Full price is something like twice that. How much are they exactly loading the card with? What's stopping me using the hypothetical extra $12 saved there on candy bar purchases?

Will try it next time and if it declines, I'll just pay with cash.

    • When did you order?

      • About an hour and a half ago. No charge to credit card yet

        • I meant, when did you sign up? just trying to see how long card wait times are at the moment.

        • @cuball:

Paid on the 13th April. Received on 30/4.

  • +1

Has anyone received their card yet?

    • On the same boat waiting for my card n battling with whether to dispute the transaction with CC

  • No card despite ordering on 8th of May.

Double charged (tried upgrading to their premium package from the basic one via their accounts page - didn't work and just ended up getting charged twice).

No response via Twitter / Support email.

Opened AMEX dispute today. I am sure I am not the only one..

    • Did you manage to resolve the double charging problem?
I've been wanting to upgrade from their 1 movie a month to 2 movies a month thing for a while but am scared of also being double charged since there is not option to pay the difference.
I've contacted Sinemia a few times about this, via email, fb and twitter, so far no response.

  • +1

I haven’t received my card yet, and I joined on the 8th May. It’s been two weeks, so I’m going to give it a bit more time. I hope it arrives soon though!

  • +1

ordered on 8th here as well but not even email notification yet that it's sent or being sent soon. still going to wait till end of this week before lodging online Amex dispute.

  • +1

no card received yet. signed up since 09 May

  • +2

Hey Everyone, Just received a DM on Twitter that Sinemia are taking ages to send out new cards.

They also said that from tomorrow (US time I assume) they will release a new feature that allows you to purchase tickets without needing the debit card that comes in the mail.

i am going to hold off on lodging a chargeback for 2 days or so until I see this new feature.

    • Nj, thanks. I am waiting

    • Have you been able to see this new feature yet?
I was told via DM yesterday that it has been released and that I just need to uninstall and reinstall the app if my app hadn't updated itself yet.
Did that twice and I still can't find/use this feature.
No response when I told them this on DM…

  • +1

Lets hope they get the virtual membership credit card up and running soon with new app update

  • +2

I woke up this morning and saw that the app had an update pending. I installed the Update and voila! the app now supports purchasing tickets online in advance and receiving the e-ticket via email.

I booked 2 tickets for this Saturday to see Deadpool and was given a virtual card number and ccv to purchase the tickets on the reading website.

Just make sure you check in via the Sinemia app when you see the movie otherwise the App will charge your own credit card for the session.

as you can imagine, i am pretty excited… the tickets in V-Max cost me $47 for 2 and I paid $220ish for the year of tickets, I should break even in 2 months.

If the Cinema website asks you if it is a Visa or MasterCard, make sure you select Visa :)

    • If the Cinema website asks you if it is a Visa or MasterCard, make sure you select Visa :)

      Why does this matter?

      • because if you select mastercard, the website will check to see if the number matches mastercards numbers / checks using a algorithim, you have to select visa because the virtual card they issue you is a Visa, although they don't mention it anywhere on the app. Visa / Mastercard run checks to make sure the card number is valid when processing the payment.

        • Oh, fair enough. Most websites will detect what the card is based off the first digit. Visa starts with 4, Mastercard with 5.

I booked 2 tickets for this Saturday to see Deadpool and was given a virtual card number

Does this mean we no longer have to wait for a card to be sent in the mail?
Also was this update for Apple or Android?

        • @vicerum:

yeah that's correct. you can go to settings in the app and activate a cardless feature that lets you use a virtual card number given to you in the app to purchase tickets instead of a physical card. i saw an app update on iOS. not sure about android.

        • @bjeffs: No update for Android Nothing in current settings for activating a virtual card :(

        • +1

@purplesp8y: maybe send @Sinemiaapp a tweet and ask when android can do virtual card activation as i always get responses from them in less that 4-8 hours via twitter. If you don't have twitter, im happy to ask them for you.

        • +1

@bjeffs: thanks, have sent them a DM through twitter and will let you all know when I get a reply

        • +1

I got this message through Twitter so will check later today - Hey Christine, if you are using Android it's not active yet. We need to wait for the update will be released today.

        • +1

          @purplesp8y:

Yup their android app hasn't been updated since 11 Nov 2017.

  • Can anyone confirm virtual card is working on android? No updates in play store.

    • you might have better luck asking people on here as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/Sinemia/

    • I don't think Android has an update yet. It works fine on my iPad so I had to lug that to the movies lol.

      • Is the check-in process easy and straightforward?

        • actually checking in didnt work for me, it literally just said error, contact support. So I did and i kept a picture of my ticket.

  • People have been waiting for more than 30 days for cards to arrive.

    https://techcrunch.com/2018/05/18/moviepass-competitor-sinem…

  • Just activated Sinemia virtual card and booked two tickets to a movie on Sunday. Payment on the cinema website processed fine. Have been emailed the tickets. Even though poster above says you have to select visa on the cinema website, I had selected MasterCard and it still processed.

  • Using the virtual card, but the payment was declined on Hoyts website:-(

    • +1

Did you activate the virtual card?

      • Yes, my membership has shown started and the remaining movie has been reduced to one.

        Premium Membership
        Membership Type
        Personal Membership - 2 movie days/per month

        Membership start date
        05/23/2018

        Sinemia Premium Plan Usage
You can use your remaining 1 movie days out of your monthly 2 movie days plan until 06/21/2018

        • Same problem here

Tried to book 2 tickets for tomorrow village cinema 2d movie and payment will not accept the virtual card details

        • @LHSolutions: Had to use the in app cancel button.
The bad thing besides not being able to pay / buy tickets is the in app ticket cancel button can only be used once a month.

        • @LHSolutions: How did you manage to cancel the advance ticket?

I dont see that option at all :(

  • If I book tickets from Hoyts website (with a Sinemia card), do I have to pay the online booking fee? Or does Sinemia pay that?

Also, if you have a Hoyts Rewards Silver membership do the purchases 'count' towards that (i.e. earn you points and thus free movies)?

What happens if you use Sinemia to buy 'discounted' tickets (e.g. Optus Perks)?

    • Believe that booking fees are covered, they just aren't covered for US customers using US booking sites,

Hoyts rewards should still count since the sinemia card acts as a debit card when you go through the cinema website,

and finally, why bother using it for discounted tickets? just buy the tickets direct from the cinemas website, just a waste to use it with discounted tickets.

      • +1

Yep - great for Frequent Flyer Points (6 per dollar) if you're a Silver Rewards member - if you use Hoyts exclusively, with the rewards points accrued, you can probably end up with an extra gold class ticket a month on top.

Noticed the plans have soared in price, but theyve also added a 5 movies a month option now.

        • 5 movies?? i dont see that plan, cause if they offer that i would definitely be upgrading to it

        • @cuball:

Must be only available to existing subscribers - can't see it on the main page, but once you log in, click Upgrade My Plan and there's a 5 movie a month plan for $21

        • @LondonCalling: i am a subscriber though, i dont see the option for 5 movies.
