Asahi Super Dry Cans 350ml $49.90/Case @ Dan Murphy's

760

First post.

Not as cheap as $55/Case of 500mL a while ago, but still a good deal. Normal price is around $60.
Asahi in cans is brewed in Japan, which makes it taste much better than other Japanese brands. Asahi/Kirin/Sapporo in bottle is brewed in China/Australia. (Except Asahi black).
Don't forget e-wish and CR to save further.

    Asahi beer is healthy

    • Asahi beer is tasty

  • +10

very important that it is brewed in japan , taste is totally different

    • +1

Yep much better than the Chinese brewed Asahi.
Same with Heineken; bottles brewed in Aus but the cans are brewed in Holland

      • +6

Ohh good to know! I'd never bothered to look at the Heineken cans, didn't know that they were the proper Dutch stuff. $62 for a case of 500mL cans at First Choice is decent, I'll have to get some. Was amazed when I went to Holland and it tasted totally different (and also crazy cheap - AU$17 for a crate of 24x 300mL bottles when on sale)

        • +4

I hated Heineken until I went to Amsterdam and realised how much better it tastes brewed there. Now the 24x500ml imported cartons are my fridge filler.

        • +1

@OneMoreTune: Like any brew, the water changes the taste. That's why 'brewed under license using imported ingredients' is always inferior than the original.

        • +1

Showing $60 for a slab of 500mlx24 cans for me at 1st Choice. DM was more than happy to price beat 1st choice by a dollar so I'm getting mine for $59.

        • -1

@grjohnson: They can't filter water now? And if they don't filter water, why is the water "always inferior" in the places under license?

        • @pork chop: lolwut

    • +2

Slightly off brand, but expect Corona to be brewed in Australia under license next. Did some market research and they emphasised Corona, given that Becks/stella/Heineken/asahi/peroni etc are already brewed under license.

    • It would be interesting to see some proper blind taste tests.

Wine drinkers are genuinely hopeless at picking out wines in blind tests so it wouldn't surprise me if that were the case for beer.

I bought the 500ml cans the last time everyone raved about it here, wish I hadnt - tastes like water.

    • +3

water …. the term used is "session beer" or "refreshing" instead of full flavoured.

500ml cans for $50 for 24 is ok …. 350 ml cans for $50 forget it…. get squires hop thief or one of their other beers which are usually $50 slab.

      • +1

With your name you should be drinking Garage Project beers :D

      • +4

Yeah, I "donated" my water cans and went back to ale.

        • +2

          That explains it :)
I used to drink the asahi Japanese brewed cans all the time up until late last year. I started experimenting more with craft beer and developed a taste for the ales.

A couple of 500ml specials ago I picked up a carton for old times sake and "water" was the word I used to describe the taste too. Fortunately my partner, who didn't adopt my ale habit had no problems with the cans.

Still a great deal for those who drink it though!

      • $49.90 for 24 cans = $2.08 per can.
Definitely still good deal, thanks OP, bought one slab

It's a terrible beer, Japans XXXX / VB

  • Just used my amex card offer and got a $10 credit as well :)

I love Jap cars but Jap beer is like Chinese cars shithouse

    • -3

Even the Chinese in Mainland don't drive Chinese cars.

      • +3

        That’s not true.

        • -1

It is sorta true for the middle-class and higher, they don't really trust the brands and only buy Chinese cars if they're on a tight budget. Same with how they'll prefer to buy imported milk products.

      • -1

The Chinese love their Chinese cars.

    • There's Hitachino leading the tiny Japanese craft beer scene

Just gonna put it out there… go get yourselves some Nail VPA. So sooooo good.
Just won silver for best pale ale at the 2018 World Beer Cup.
Sorry, can't help myself from banging on about some of the beers I've been getting into recently.

Or get some tasty and local ale instead

  • +2

Shows as $52.90 for me after setting my local store

    • +1

Me too. I didn't see where is the special price.

    • +1

I am guessing this is because the law in your state requires retailers to refund you 10c for each empty can, that's why they shift the cost on consumers.
Any case of beer regardless of its brand, would be $2 more expensive in your state than others, such as VIC
Your may play around with post codes on its website to check.

mmmmm cat piss in a can

    • Why you drinkin' cat piss for?

  • Are cans better for the environment? Are they being recycled in the current environment?

    • Yes. The metal has a higher resale value than plastic, doesn't need shipping offshore for processing

      • +1

Who the hell gets beer in plastic?!

      • I guess the question is cans vs glass bottles…
I haven't seen much beer in plastic bottles.

        • +2

a lot of venues serve beer in plastic glasses to stop people "glassing" others if there is a difference of opinion on trivial matters.

they tried wine a few years ago in plastic bottles, didn't take off …. it was cheaper container, easier to recycle and being lighter than glass had a lower carbon footprint for transportation. chances are aluminium cans instead of bottles are also lower carbon footprint to transport and recycle….. do hipsters drink from cans ?

need the enviromental hezbollah onto this.

if they can get straws and bags banned …. maybe takeaway containers … happy to bring my own and pay by weight at the takeaway….. no more short changing portion sizes with their 1/2 empty containers.

    • -1

      Who cares!

      • For the environment? A lot of people actually.

  • -1

The cans sold individually on the shelf say brewed in Vietnam.

    • +1

      Look again.
Cans are always brewed in Japan.
You must have picked up a Sapporo (also silver can)

  • Polished off the 2 500ml boxes I got from the last deal, and am craving more.. but at this price and quantity I'll probably stick with some squires until the 500ml are back

  • -4

Beer in cans is great… if you are an underage drinker. Once you grow up it starts to taste like water.

    • +2

      Don't be so angre

  • I think I'll stick to 30 for 30 TUN Red Draught… also at Dan Murphy's

  • Make sure to wear the Superdry jacket you picked up last week while drinking

  • +1

Quite boring, easy to drink lager. Certainly nothing remarkable. So many weaboos on Ozbargain.

I can understand $55/500mL being an ok deal but this is a stretch.

  • long time asahi drinker in my younger days but now find it uninteresting and bland. Check out Wayward fusami for something with a bit more character

  • Hanzo Hazashi gives it 5 stars

  • The Adnams Pale Ale on special at the moment if you prefer your beer with flavour. Nice hoppy pale $10 for a 4 pack of 500ml cans.

  • show $52.90 for me?
