Intel CPU Core 2 Duo E8400 3GHz LGA775 $97 - Officeworks Hobart in-Store Clearance

520

Was in at Officeworks tonight and picked up an Intel CPU Core 2 Duo E8400 for $97.
Cheapest price on Staticice is $180 - http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=intel+8400&…
Intel specs here - http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=33910

Yes, the C2D is now older technology, but for the price and the ability to upgrade on a Socket 775 motherboard, a bargain in my books. For me it is a very cheap replacement to a significantly underpowered Intel Celeron 3300 in my parents computer!

Unavailable on-line, clearance line which is possibly available at other stores as well. There were 3 left on the shelves in Hobart.

Also, noticed that point and shoot cameras were further reduced. The Nikon Coolpix S610 which I paid $99 last week is now $79 :(

  • Nice. If it was nationwide I would pick one up to replace my E5200…

    • Just ring up your local, they were way overpriced at office works and not many sold I reckon. Markdown was from nearly $300, when you could get them for low $200's at most cheaper computer stores. Hobart has gone out of all cases, vid cards, cpu's etc, so I presume this might be available quite widely nationally.

can you please upload that receipt?

    • Wanting to get one to replace my mum's E5200 as well! ;)
Not really the best time though, finacially, considering floods and stuff.

  • +3

Receipt attached, but shouldn't be needed as it would be a normal storewide clearance price http://upload.ozbargain.com/2011/01/13/5191_028.jpg

      thanks mate u da best

  • +3

wow these are old… surprised that they havent been cleared out earlier.

    • +5

Apple still sells new MacBooks with 2.4Ghz E8400s :-)

      • Which macbook? Do you mean P8400(@2.26ghz) or T8300(@2.4ghz)?

  • is this processor better than my Intel Q6600 2.4GHz

    • +4

I wouldn't spend money "upgrading" to a dual core CPU.

Your Q6600 is still a pretty powerful CPU — slap on a good heatsink on it (like a Hyper 212+) and overclock that beast!

      • +3

The Q6600 on a decent air cooling set up can hit 3Ghz easily. That should bring it close to the E8400 in terms of performance for things that havent been optimised for multicore processing.

        • +1

IIRC, over at OCAU if you're not hitting at least 3.6GHz with a Q6600 you're considered to be a…what's the colloquial term…oh yeah, n00b! :p

        • Stewballs… thats a little bit optimistic for "any" Q6600 24/7 linpack stable on air, I think maybe 3.0 - 3.2 as a minimum OC depending on the chip/MB/cooling etc.

        • Whoosh!!! :)

    • Depends on what you need it to do.
Your's is a quadcore, where as the E8400 is only a dual core.

    • Probably about the same, and wouldn't be worth it to replace your Q6600. Yours would be better for 3D rendering etc, E8400 probably a bit better for gaming and overclocking. If you had to choose between the 2 it would come down to price only. Plenty of threads in google if you search.

    • -3

I don't know where you get that crap from but the Q6600 is definitely better than the E8400.
It's a quad whereas E8400 is only a dual. Heck, I also considered upgrading to the Q6600 when I had my E8400.
But for future references, use tables like these: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-cpu-overclocking-ph…

      • +2

Benchmarking software factor in the fact that one's a dual core and the other is a quad because they mostly just processess sheer numbers or data to determin a score by seeing who does it the quickest. This is where the problem with determining which is better lies, a faster clocked dual core is better for applications that don't require multiple cores, like most games we're only seeing multicore gaming or games that support more than two cores coming through now. The quad core however is better for things that can utilise the multiple cores like video encoding and what not.
So whether an E8400 is better than a Q6600 or not it depends on what you need to do.

        • +1 on above poat

      • its ok, we dont ban for duplicates

  • +5

The new Officeworks website is awkward. I prefer the old style.

  • I had this in my desktop that I built the year before last. It was pretty quick. Till I upgraded to the i7 on my MacbookPro. :)

  • +1

Thanks for the tip, got a Q9400 for $130.

    • nice score, only the E8400 left in Hobart :(

      • Thanks for you :) Great bargain!
Now I might need a new PSU.. Come on Ozbargain~!

    • Was the Q9400 an instore sale eh? If so, could you kindly share the receipt please? Want to see if my local one here will match it :)

  • anyone knows how much imporvement compare to my old dual core e6300 2.8mhz?

    • According to the benchmarks on www.cpubenchmark.net there isn't much difference between them. The E6300 ranks near the top of the high mid range category whereas the E8400 ranks near the bottom of the high end category. E6300 scores 1944 and ranks 280th, whereas the E8400 scores 2245 and ranks 242nd - you probably wouldn't notice the difference.

Newer processors score in the 4,000+ range.

    • Even if you're willing to do a good oc, I'm inclined to agree with reddog. The only reason I'd recommend you upgrade (specific to your circumstance) is if you're hitting a CPU bottleneck in gaming, but I doubt that's the case.

    • If its only running @ 2.8mhz, quit a bit :p

      • +1

hahaha…someone had to say it.., we all know he/she meant 2.8ghz ;)

  • The 8400 can Overclock to 4Ghz with a decent CPU cooler…might go get one tomorrow for the family computer.

    • really? i have this processor… never really overclocked it, but it could improve my SC2 performance if i did…. hrm. what temp should i be keeping it under?

      • I have my E8500 overclocked to 3.67ghz, and at idle it's currently sitting at 38 celsius with a Hyper TX3 fansink.

Plays SC2 quite smoothly with a Radeon 5850.

The trick is to keep the vcore voltage as close to stock as possible. I have mine at stock settings — haven't played with it.

        • Off the top of my head im pretty sure the E8500 and 8400 are the exact same chip, the 8500 was just clocked higher right out of the box.
Tman what Video card do you have?

        • +1

          @Fincky
Yes that's right the E8400 and E8500 are the exact same chip except one has a multiplier of 9 and the other 9.5, both have the same FSB that's why the E8500 is slightly faster out of the box.

        • i have an nvidia geforce 8800gt

        • +1

The 8800 Gt sucks lol. You need a new GPU.

  • i like ow new website layout

    • Its completely borked at the moment.

wait what since when does OW sell pc components

  • I too didn't even know officeworks sold CPUs….never seen that in Adelaide. Anybody seen it in Adelaide stores?

    what stepping was it?

    • SLB9J - E0 steppping

  • Got this CPU when it was launched almost 3 yrs ago. Paid $330 for it. Running it at 3.94Ghz with a Noctua heatsink.

  • Went to Officework in Artarmon and they say they are not selling PC component at all

  • @people who didn't think OW sold computer components:
Only select OW stores sell them. I'd recommend looking for a WP thread, ringing up etc or if you're lazy there's an incomplete list here:

Confirmed that Fyshwick has two left in stock at the clearance price.

    • Thanks, I got the last one. Right next to it was a Thermaltake Big Typ 120VX that was half-price @ $34 so I grabbed that too. Made a nice package.

  • No stock in Qld, according to one store, though apparently there are 31 E8400 and 5 Q9400 left in other states.

  • I just gought a E8400 from OW in Keswik.
According to their check no Q9400's available.

  • hmmm too bad my mobo can't support 45 nm lithograpy cpu otherwise it's a good upgrade for my dying P4 3 Ghz..

    • I am now selling a E6750 if you are interested. :) Contact through ozbargain.

      • Sounds good, I 'll contact you..ty!

    • What? I thought any MB with LGA775 socket can accept any LGA775 CPU. Luckily I checked and my Gigabyte P35-DS3P can accept the E8400. So there's another E6750 is available for sell :)

      • Motherboards that were made before the 45nm LGA775 came out might or might not have supported the new Cores (some could be flashed to support, but most weren't). Also when the new motherboards came out some of the new motherboards couldn't support P4s…..

      • Did you actually feel any significant improvement from E6750 to E8400?
I think on my pc the performance improvement is not really obvious as I hardly do any cpu intensive work.

        • I suspect that would be the case. I am running relatively intensive tasks, with 6-8 apps running concurrently everyday and the E6750 is coping well. An addition of a solid-state drive (SSD) or upgrading a graphic card (for intensive graphic apps) would have given us a more tangible +ve feedback.

Called up the Highett VIC store to see if they had any stock. Got him to check the Q9400 and E8400, and there's still quite a few in stock around the state. But apparently they can't transfer between stores since it has been discontinued. Was he just being lazy, or am I out of luck (short of driving all the way to one of the other stores)?

Wish you could order online :(

If people are interested, here's what I found out:

    Q9400 ($130)
    Geelong
    Ferntree Gully

    E8400 ($97)
    Geelong
    South Melbourne
    Ferntree Gully
(I think there were a few more stores but couldn't remember which)

    • thanks bro.

you know any other stores that are selling cheap CPUs?

  • +3

I was lucky enough to get a Q8200 for $44 at North Ryde, dunno how that happened! Called around most stores in Sydney beforehand and its safe to say no more processor bargains left.

    • O_O

    • I was at that store today afternoon and was the unlucky one! You must be the person bought the last one.

      • i was hesitating to go there today, doubting there would be any left for me. thanks, you save me half an hour.

  • Just got it from the South Melbourne store.

    Great buy!!

    • hey bro, do you know if they had the q series cpu's?

      • Nope they don't. I went there wanting one, but they don't have. I bought the last e8400 too. The Doncaster store has more of them though.

  • oh ok.

i heard some stores have the Q8XXX series. how much were these?

  • anyone know which officeworks stores have the Q8XXX or the Q9XXX?

  • just rang ferntree gully and they have no more QXXXX chips left. only E chips.

  • rang five dock, they sold loast cpu (Exxxx) 10 mins ago! too bad!

  • if there are cpu's left they are likely to have been reduced further by now. Anybody know what the clearance cycle is for OW items, eg day of week they reduce items etc ?

  • Picked up a E8400 from Ferntree Gully at 8am this morning. There was 1 more on the shelf after my purchase.

I had them check Q9400 stock, They had 1 on hold and there were 2 in Geelong. So total of 3 left in VIC. I couldn’t justify the trip to Geelong…

  • +1

alwayseric - I have just returned an E8400 to OW @ Fivedock. After procrastination for a while, I don't see much of an advantage in upgrading my E6750 PC which I would written off in a year time anyway.
