Awesome, thanks. Signed up and should come in handy for upcoming Hawaii trip, 1200 odd spots in honolulu. Looks like even the rural areas of Nara that we frequently visit has some cover.

  • yeh got this email - wasnt sure what it was but said it was $10/month service for free so signed up. Now that I see it on ozbargain with positive votes on it - i know it must be a proper deal then! thanks for the feedback ozbargain

  • Not that I have tested but this seems to be for all “world mastercards” https://www1.mastercard.com/content/mc/offer-exchange/world/…

There are a number of other cards like Travelex money card and cash passport which also appear to be eligible

    • Doesn't work on Bankwest platinum

  • Boingo Wi-Finder andriod app requires permission to write system settings? Can't use the app without granting permission.

    • You don't need app to connect to wifi, just use login details

      • Thanks. Will try that.

  • If I sign up as a new 28 degrees customer, approx how long does it take the card to arrive?

I’m flying out of Aus on the 25th this month and want to take advantage of this deal.

    • Depends if you are approved instantly or your application sent for review which would take a few more days.

      • What we looking at for instant approval?

High income, little debt, good credit rating. Not living at home with parents.

High income, little debt, good credit rating. Not living at home with parents.

Would make a good tinder profile…

        • +4

@Gearup: I'm curious why credit providers would consider not living with parents as a positive. I would have thought that not living with parents means less disposable income.

        • @suburbanmale:

What has living at home with parents got to do with your income level.

        • @Easton: Because you'll be forced to have a regular job if you are not living with parents, meaning a more stable income on average.

    No luck for Citibank Plantinum.

  • why is 28degrees no longer everyones favorite overseas card anymore?

    • +6

They stopped the loophole of ‘over paying’ your credit card into positive balance which resulted in same rate fee free withdrawals from foreign countries of that positive balance. I most defiantly used that to my advantage, mainly in the USA.

Also something about bpay fees , but they don’t charge for bank transfer so who cares.

They recently have been taken over by latitude. No doubt an annual fee will appear sooner of later.

I think there is a new favourite out there, can’t recall which one.

    • +4

cause you can just use citibank plus account without the cash withdrawal fees 28degrees decided to start charging

    • coz there is ING now.

    • and used to be free overseas ATM withdrawal if you were in positive balance but no more now they charge something like that

From my experience some 5+ years ago, it was such a hassle to connect and when it does connect, it doesn't have any connection. Spent a good 30 mins trying to connect to the hotspot but gave up in the end.

Hopefully things have improved since then and it's free anyway so can't really complain.

    • I didn't have this then, but used a free trial in Hawaii, and it was super useful. Honolulu airport's boingo has 110 mbps down and 90 mbps up. I definitely used that to upload photos really quickly

did not work for my westpac altitude black credit card :(

  • Last time I flew Etihad I purchased thier 30 day Wifi pass and it worked well. So this is a nice little kicker!

  • -5

“Free” service associated with a credit card seems ominous.

  • +1

    Thanks :)

  • Boingo use Gogo for inflight wifi.

Let us know if anyone gets this to work. Gogo is on Virgin Aus/Delta etc..

  • +2

Thanks op, just got to Japan. Using B mobile but great to have a backup option.

  • Cancelled my 28 degrees ages ago. Ever since they no longer offer top up above credit balance to withdraw cash overseas for free.

Also don't like Bpay payment fees + I don't like to give them my bank details when I wanna pay them via website

Enough said. Use Citibank plus ATM instead for cash withdrawal and credit card overseas just go Coles Mastercard for points and no fee for exchange. You easily can spend and earn points to cover annual fee.

Or alternatively just use your homeloan credit card bundled with, some don't charge exchange fees anyway

  • so this is a free mobile wifi hotspot to use here in australia and globally forever?

yes it won't be everywhere but thats pretty cool too right?

  • Upvoted and signed up for it, not sure if I'll ever use it though. Give it a crack in Europe this summer.

    Search for hotspots

    http://wifi.boingo.com

  • +1

90% of their listed hotspots are crap like McDonalds… It's basically and expensive, glorified map. Should be free anyway.

  • +2

I'm in Hong Kong at the moment, and I tested it this afternoon walking to the supermarket. It notified me that I can connect to a Boingo hotspot (I may have opened the app first, I can't remember) and 10 or so seconds after hitting a button I was connected to really fast WiFi out on the street.

I'll have heaps of opportunity to test it over the next week, but so far it looks like it could save me getting a SIM card.

  • 2 in Bris city, 3 at Gold Coast. Appears that's it for Qld.

    • They don't have many hotspots in Australia, but if it works as advertised, it seems super useful when travelling. Just checking East Asia it seems to give access to all of docomo's hotspots and some Wi2 hotspots in Japan, similarly a lot in Korea and China Mobile hotspots in China.

Telstra Air/Fon promised hotspots basically blanketing urban areas in Japan and Korea but when I got there there were scarcely any and the ones that it did pick up were usually too difficult to connect to.

  • Hmm, stopped using my 28 Degrees card when Latitude took over and they removed the ability to top up and withdraw cash effectively fee free, then they added a fee for BPay (yes I know I can EFT but screw em, I paid by BPay for many years fee free). Haven't used the card for ages as the Citi card does give cash fee free and a good exchange rate, but nice to see to see Latitude finally giving some value add rather than decreasing it.

  • how long does membership last if you sign up? any other mc cards have the offer ie world mc?

      From the FAQ:

      Q. How long do I have this Boingo Wi-Fi for Mastercard Cardholders benefit for?
      A. The benefit is good until your card is cancelled or closed.

  • +2

Hopefully this is more useful overseas than the failure of a network that the Telstra Air/Fon partnership offers.

  • +1

Perfect. Heading to Japan tomorrow. Will test it out.

  • +5

This works on Singapore Airlines in-flight wifi. Currently on board heading to Singapore.

    • Is that wifi marked as Gogo?

      • +2

You select the airline's Wi-Fi network, launch browser and from their menu go to other roaming options which lists Boingo as a provider.

    • +3

Old post on Web but this is what I have dug up re inflight wifi access. Would be good if more people could confirm:

Apparently these airlines may have free inflight internet with Boingo.
      Aer Lingus,
      Aero Mexico,
      Air Berline,
      Air Europa,
      Air France,
      Air Serbia,
      Air Seychelles,
      Alitalia,
      American Airlines,
      ANA,
      British Airways,
      Cathay Pacific,
      China Airlines,
      Etihad Airways,
      Eurowings,
      EVA Air,
      Finnair,
      Garuda Indonesia,
      Iberia,
      Kenya Airways,
      KLM,
      Lufthansa,
      Maindo Air,
      Qatar Airways,
      Scoot,
      Singapore Airlines,
      Virgin Atlantic,
      WestJet"

For anyone who has an ancient Diners Club card, apparently the diners club app may also allow access to free wifi hotspots mainly overseas and inflight (not much in Oz).

      • I tried on Scoot yesterday but to no avail.

        • +2

Tried again today and it works!

          @Reveen:
          Thanks for the good feedback👍

        • @Infidel: I'm on another flight at the moment and it's smooth sailing.

        • +1

          I'm up in the sky
          Using free Wi-Fi
          Feeling so fly

          • @Reveen: how long did u have the free wifi for? My friend tried connecting, but he was only allowed 15 mins free boingo wifi

            • @meowmeow23: The entire flight - five hours. Maybe they've changed usage terms?

              • @Reveen: which airline? Garuda only allowed 15 min. Going to try cathay pacific in a few days time.

      • Has anyone tired if Boingo works on Cathay Pacific’s A350 for free?

Also, any clue on whether it will work on their A330 and B777 aircraft once they are fitted with wifi?

        Thanks.

On my Windows 10 machine, tried to download the profile to enable the account - it says I must do this on MSIE..! ok - so it's the first time I need MSIE… - Edit - then download the profile and go to windows app store to load the Boingo Wi-finder app, only to find : this app is no longer available. Not working for me so far…

    • Tether to your phone?

  • The post says: looking at plans on boingo website if the same Mobile plan is usually $9.95pm(boingo.com).

I don't think so. The Mobile plan is for Any 4 MOBILE devices. “Mobile Devices” are defined as all non-laptop electronic devices, such as smartphones, MP3 Players, portable gaming devices, cameras, and Tablets.

This offer is for Up to 4 Wi-Fi devices - which would include laptops and notebooks.

    • In that case that’s the US$39pm plan

      • +1

        Getting closer but not quite.

The USD39 plan is limited to 2,000 minutes per month

        This one is unlimited

  • Could never have the app work for me for some reason. It does show several wifi hotspots in the area but doesn't let connecting to any. The networks are secured and require a password to connect. Data gathering exercise, iMHO.

  • -1

Westpac Altitude Black World Mastercard not eligible.

    • ??

This is only for 28 Degree Platinum Mastercard Holders.

      • Somebody above commented that it might be for any/all World Mastercards. Just adding to the dataset of people trying different ones as my contribution to the community. Probably should've posted it as a reply to that earlier comment.

  • Just found that I can use Boingo on American Airlines. Very handy because I typically wouldn't pay for it. Not sure if the Wifi is on all their planes though. Currently in the air between Boston & L.A.

  • Just signed in to make a payment on my 28 degrees card and saw this on the landing page. Signed up and will be really handy for our next trip to Europe. Great offer from 28 degrees and may get us out of a bind while traveling. Only issue could not download passpoint app as my browser is not Explorer 11 - anyone had the same issue with windows 10?

  • How do you actually know which hotspots are Boingo? Looking at the map, they all have different SSIDs, so there's no way to know. Unless you had access to the map.. which requires internet access to begin with.

    • Maybe the app will identify and connect you to accessible networks.

    • +1

There's a map in the app which, stupidly, relies on an existing data connection…so if you were o/s w/out roaming data you'd have to plan your day around where the hotspots are. If you don't have an existing data connection, there's no way to find out where to go to get one…

I've not connected to a Boingo partner hotspot yet (there aren't any near me), but the app has popped up a couple of times to say that it's found a free wifi that's not part of the Boingo network. I clicked the "connect me" button once and it failed to connect :\ I presume if it's actually a Boingo wifi it would connect successfully, but the experience of others above suggests not.

  • Signed up a few months ago. http://wifi.boingo.com/ shows many more hotspots now in Sydney, and they use the SSID IL_WiFi. Presumably they got a partner. Anybody had any experiences with Boingo? Might give it a go tomorrow.

I'm actually more interested in Japan for my next trip as it seems there are lots of spots there. In particular Lawson convenience stores seem to be hotspots.

    • Tried to connect to a couple of hotspots detected by the app in North Sydney today but failed. They looked like they were inside offices, e.g. one in Cisco 80 Pacific Highway. Maybe only works during work days. Who knows?

    • The hotspot at Moore Park supercentre Cnr Todman Ave and South Dowling St will connect using the Boingo App. Reasonable speeds. SSID IL_WiFI.

    • Interesting, I've now managed to connect to two hotspots. But one of those is Chatswood Westfield which is free anyway, and the other is a workplace. Looks like Boingo is partnering with providers to get more hotspots on their list.

    • We got back from a Japan trip a couple of weeks ago where we used this via the 28 degrees MC thing.
Review: good when it worked but flaky. The longest and most useful place it worked was on the shinkasen from Tokyo to Osaka and back. It connects to one of the wifi services provided by what I think is one of the mobile phone companies (not the docomo one, the other one in the help bit of the app). The problem is that it took multiple attempts to connect and about 10 minutes of mucking around. I had to manually input the wifi password and select the AP a couple of times (this may or may not have helped). If we weren't on the train for a few hours then I wouldn't have bothered. When it did work it was good, reasonable speeds for light browsing, maps and emails. The kids watched some youtube on the train.

Elsewhere, there were so may free wifi hotspots that we didn't use it a lot. But there were a few times it was very useful. Oddly, the location seems to matter a lot. One place in Tokyo (the public building with the views) the hotpsot worked in one place on the ground floor with a radius of about 10m.

  • anyone tried using boingo in Kuala Lumpur and Malacca? any comments, good, bad or ugly?
