Keeping Toilet Clean - What products / Methods do you use?

Hi everybody,

In the past we've used normal bleach cleaner (Coles brand of domestos) to clean the toilets, and then use a 'Duck Fresh Disc' which lasts a number of weeks.

Instead of buying more refills (refills are rarely in sale, etc) was wondering what others use to keep toilets clean between cleans?

The physical plastic cases that hold a blue thing seems unsightly, and would prefer to avoid mucking around with it.

How about Mr. Muscle Strips?

Or any other suggestions?

If there's a brown stain I aim my pee at it until it's gone.

    • +6

Agreed - I bought this to train my kids from a young age.

How do you clean the pee that's splashed up to outside?

      • +11

Aim your crap at it. It's like a never ending game of skill and accuracy.

        • Aim your crap at it.

Especially effective, for those of us whom poop rainbows 😉

      • Bit of toilet paper lightly wetted with shower water as I wait for the shower water to heat up. Also good for a quick wipe around the top of the rim if there's been any drops there too.

Do it everyday before hopping in the shower and you'll rarely see those pee spots on the floor around the bowl.

Also whenever possible pee in the shower to save on water and from creating more drops :P

      • Toilet Paper

    • I was taught this method too.

      • As a member of a share house, clearing the bowl of the others' exhaust with my own high-pressure urea-jet is my contribution to the weekly housework. I detail it clearly on our roster, complete with stain descriptions, times and levels of effort required. I've been challenged on it only once or twice but I tell them that I don't mind doing more than my fair share, so long as it is such a great contribution to our domestic harmony.

It works best when updating a clipboard on the back of the toilet door to verify each job, as people soon start looking behind them before they exit. This has helped put an end to having to do it every day. After a few weeks you only have the inconvenience of having to do it every month or so. It's especially good when you can describe the demise of 'lost' sanitary products within the confine of the bowl

    • -1

what about those bits that just don't come off, that hit the bowl at the speed of light

      • +2

You increase the pressure that comes out your nozzle. Ensure you accumulate enough urine so you get enough juice in the tank per se

Just buy a brown toilet. Problem solved

    • +13

But technically the shade of brown or black skid marks can vary. Maybe need one that's painted like military camouflage with an assortment of different brown hues?

      • +1

        Leopard print toilet perhaps

      • Just get a porcelain Bono toilet

Do yourself a favor and buy this product Bowl Fresh. I don't know how but it lasts for bloody weeks.

    • Sorry item is not available

      • +2

Link is just a guide mate. Buy it in store.

      • +3

        Ozbargained already?

    • i think it depends on how often you flush

      • Nope, I guarantee… it lasts for weeks.

    • Thanks…
Looked for it at Coles today, and didn't find it - will try Woolworths.

    • +1

Nice thanks this might be just what I am looking for.. excellent for lazy or very busy households.

    • mate, can you please tell how much it cost per unit and approx many weeks it lasts?

      • +1

Think it's around $4, mine has lasted a month

    • +2

They don't have them anymore :(

Can confirm they are great, just took it out my cistern to confirm brand name and stained my hands.

      10/10 works.

    • That and the CLR spray were the two best cleaning products in my bathroom but sadly Woolworth (at least locally in Perth to me) stopped selling both earlier in the year.

      • Couldn't find it at the Woolworths I checked… Will have to keep looking…

Anyone know a store where they're still available?

  • +4

I use Duck Fresh Disks like you. I like that they're kind of an indicator about when it is time to scrub the toilet (they last about a week and a half to two weeks)

    • +2

It seems with those duck discs that they work amazing for the first week, but the 2nd week they spend as a tiny shell of it's former self that just doesn't want to give up and will hang on for dear life even after multiple attempts to pee it away over days.

I've resorted to using a spray bottle with a narrow beam to whittle them down to nothingless once they are at that point where I just want to clean the bowl but am waiting on the disc to die gracefully.

Good product though, and I stocked up when on special so +1 duck discs.

    • When I flush my toilet it doesn't have a whirlpool effect though, it's just a waterfall around the sides. What can I do to get most use form those damn discs?

Now I'm just buying a slab of Morning Fresh dish detergent and just spray it around in circles around the bowl

    Would Rain-X or Enduroshield work?

  • +7

    More fibre in my diet.

    • +2

Doesn't work for me, skid King cannot be defeated by fibre

    • Psyllium husk :)

  • how often do you clean your toilet?

    • Generally try to clean them weekly, but sometimes it's every other week.

  • +3

Would vinegar or baking soda work ?

    • +1

      You can use Coke.

      • Only off the seat itself, not the bowl, that would be gross!

        • +4

Don't put the straw in then.

  • +7

I am waiting for the what colour is your belly button lint forum topic.

    • Wasn't that already resolved way back in 2002?

  • Use napisan, or the also equivalent. Sprinkle some in and leave it for about 10mins

The professional cleaner's method is to spray the toilet with a substance that doesn't require a "rinse", and wipe off with paper towels that are discarded in the bin. To clean the bowl there's a stick with a ball of fluff on it. You use it push a bit of water out of the bottom of the bowl. A somewhat foul-smelling blue liquid is poured on the fluff ball which you disperse around the bowl. You leave it for a bit to do it's work and flush.

At home I use the spray and wipe method but with toilet paper (which is flushed). Window cleaner can be substituted for the spray disinfectant if needed. I pour bleach into the water occasionally to combat build-up although the inner rim of the bowl gets some kind of buildup that is tough to remove. Now that I think of it, maybe I should break out the old chemicals even if they stink the house out for a few hours.

Number one rule (self-taught) of cleaning toilets that I learned: Do not look directly at the diarrhoea etc. that you are cleaning off.

I have this fabulous self-cleaning toilet - just press the button on top!

  • +25

Although my wife doesn't believe it but I strongly believe and have noticed that if you resist cleaning the toilet long enough, it magically cleans itself.

    • +21

Followed by how your wife magically cleans out your bank account when the divorce comes through.

      • @try2bhelpful Try to be helpful :)

  • +2

This reminds me of the "Young Ones" episode where their toilet asked "What's Domestos".

  • +5

    A brush?

    • Yes, correct.

Just looking for suggestions what others are using, as the costs of Duck Fresh Discs seems excessive (and refills rarely on sale).

      Thanks

      • +3

I use a brush, just get one that sits in a container. Fill the container with a concentrated mix of toilet cleaner and water, then every time you use the brush it adds a bit of cleaner to the toilet. Every two weeks clean the toilet using the mix and replace the mix. One the alternate weeks, do a full bathroom clean.

  • I find with a weekly clean with domestos/bleach, I do not need to use discs and the like in between

  • +1

I brush it, use toilet duck and air freshner spray when required, mop it (with the rest of my house) every week. I don't piss on the floor, but I'm guessing my kids will take a while to get on board with that when they start using the toilet soon.

I have an extraction fan that I put on a motion sensor so it keeps running for a few minutes after you leave. I don't use anything else there is no need to use anything else.

  • +2

    Flush daily

  • +1

I pour a 75g container of citric acid into the toilet bowl once a month and leave it for a few hours or overnight then give the bowl a scrub with the toilet brush.

    Works well.

    • Thats awesome use always for kettles will give it a go

  • I poo at work

    • You are too late plus do you work 24/7?

  • +1

I use a white in-cistern cleaning block. I know some people are against these because they can cause stains (especially if you buy a blue coloured one) or if you don't flush often enough it can do something adverse to the plumbing/pipes, but if it's a regularly used loo and you flush it at least daily, it works great at keeping it both a bit cleaner (easier to clean later on) as well as smelling nicer.

  • +2

    WD 40

  • Use pool acid works amazing

What the hell kind of topic is this for public discussion?

  • +1

When I traveled in Asia they had these water sprays at every toilet. Keeps bum and toilet clean. Installed one back home and happy day's!

    • Nice to use during winter huh.

      • +1

Heated water spray .. or a nice warm steam/mist

  • I use one of those under the rim solutions then leave on for about 30 mins then scrub then flush.

For the seat and over the rim just any sanitizer spray really and wash and rinse.

Try to do it weekly but it's more like monthly.

  • i don't poo

    • U swallow?

I LOVE to lick the bowl clean. Oops, sorry, wrong thread.

    1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.

    2. Pick up a cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.

    3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close the lid. You may need to stand on the lid.

    4. At this point the cat will self-agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet – the cat is actually enjoying this!

    5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a “power-wash” and “rinse.”

    6. Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.

    7. Stand well back, behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift the lid.

    8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry himself off.

    9. Both the toilet and the cat will be sparkling clean.

    • Ah yes, the tried, trusted and highly recommended feline power spin.

I'm surprised that I had to go this far down in the thread to find the best method.

Next thread - what treatments are there for cat scratches and bites.

  • some people use bare hands and do it the old fashion way.

I use these, they go in the tank and make all of the water blue (not just where the cage touches)
Cheap as (profanity), lasts forever, lives in the back tank so doesnt get pee/poo vapor all over it
    It's a long cylinder (not a block)

    • That's basically what I'm looking for…

      While look for it in-store.

      Thanks!

  • Mums cooking in the kitchen.

Mummy Mummy can I lick the bowl?

NO, flush it like everyone else

    Choice recommends:
Power Force Bright & clean OXY Thick Toilet Gel
Power Force Bright & Clean Thick Bleach

Apparently Water only is better than any of the following:

    Coles Toilet Cleaner
    Coles Toilet Gel
    Home Recipe Toilet Cleaner
    Homebrand Toilet Cleaner

  • Firecracker. They're great for unclogging the toilet

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7RcWK9QIC8

  • At the cafe we use a really complicated process of using a microfibre cloth, some hot soapy water, and wiping. It's a 2 minute job at most. I know! How the heck is the average person supposed to cope with that?
We also find that for anything stuck on, a brush works wonders :-O. A little domestos or white king once a week around the inside of the bowl freshens everything up.
Don't forget to wash out the brush as well, and domestos it regularly too.

  • In terms of bleach, Harpic is pretty useless. White King is much better.

  • just use someone else toilet

  • so I have a problem that any bleach based cleaning products or products with high odor set off my dodgy asthma, can anyone suggest cleaning products that are low odor but actually clean? I'm sick of random floofy feel good product that promises rainbows and is just fancy water.

  • +1

Ikea brush and regular harpic toilet cleaner.

I use cleaner every week or two or as needed. Usually apply harpic and let it rest overnight before cleaning. Makes the job real easy.

From my experience if you need the brush after every time you do your business it’s a sign that you should increase your fibre intake.

    Is this for real??

  • Most of my skids end up on the back of the bowl (above water level), so first thing I do is put a square of t-paper in that exact spot. The water on the bowl keeps it stuck there.
Haven't had any skid problems since
