Probably more useful than the "GPU AMD RADEON RX" ahha

Well I purchased it for ~$600 a few months before you did, so not even the price you got it for was a good deal! /s

      • would the decline in crypto mining result in ever cheaper price?

How much was the lowest price for the 1080?

      • -1

I knew that at the time that I bought it that it was not the cheapest price it had ever been. I was content with paying that price. But I knew it wasn't necessarily a good deal. This price is more expensive and for anyone unfamiliar with the cards general price history, some context may have been useful in making a decision.

Shame you didn't share with the community then.

    • no way you would have got this exact same card just a few months ago (what, some time in early 2018??), which at that time would probably have been at their highest inflated price.

If you did buy the exact card for $680 of eBAY it would have been a lot long than a few months ago.

I bought this exact card for $680 off ebay sales a few months ago. Personally, I wouldn't consider this a good deal.

The question is why you didn't post the $680 deal a few months ago? You're willing to post to criticise deals but unwilling to post a deal so that others can benefit.

A lot of people like to brag on the internet, especially when it comes to computer components.

      • This was not to brag. It was a comment with my personal experience in price history (although with a different store) and my personal opinion on the deal.

That's pretty much what I said.

Maybe it came from a seller that was part of the 20% off sales, but not powerseller and therefore not allowed to be posted on this site.

I'm a little skeptical that an Asus ROG 1080 was had for $650 new in Q1 2018 though, but maybe the same Gigabyte Windforce 1080 that I got a few months ago from an eBay 20% off deal.

Because it was from Future Gear, I wasn't allowed to post the 20% off deal as a separate bargain. Although I did put it in the comments section of the main eBay thread and a couple of people were able to get it.

      • yup. 100% correct

    • Let's be more open minded about the statement. It could very well be more about telling people that this deal might not be that great.

While $680 for this card is a good deal for most people (and people would have liked to know about the deal at the time), it may not be considered a bargain. Don't get me wrong, I love to have a GTX 1080. However, it costs too much for me (even at $680) - I know I am greedy. With all the news about GTX 1180 and GTX 1170 supposedly coming soon, and the recent drops in AMD/ATi graphics cards, perhaps there is a chance that graphics card prices will finally drop. It doesn't make sense the graphics card I bought 1 year ago is now selling for 2X as much.

I really enjoy PC gaming (partly due to I am a pretty lousy gamer) and you get a lot more flexibility with PC games. Still yearn for a top notch graphics card, but not at this price point.

Stock of cards is running out and plenty of cards are still being picked up for crypto usage. Prices will go up when the new cards are released.

        • @Maverick-au:

I read in the news that crypto mining is declining.

The hype of bitcoin has really died down since last year.

That doesn't mean anything, only the fools are getting out.

Bitcoin isn't the only crypto, there are plenty that are much more profitable to mine.

With the GTX 20xx/11xx line coming out in a month or 2 and the $800 for a 3 year old card.
Not worth, save your monies for now.

  • What's the difference between the branded cards,
    GTX1080 ASUS / MSI etc..?

    • different cooling configuration.
plus you can brag about ROG crap

I found a GTX ROG Strix 1080 for $799 available right now. Worth posting a deal?

Just paste the link in this deal. Those interested will see it.

  • No point buying this at all, when 11xx series coming out soon!
Folks , save your money for the next generation! Pascal Architecture is out very soon.

  • +2

Pascal came out in 2016. nVidia haven't given any indication of when the 11xx series will be released. It's only speculation that it will be out mid year.

    • Seeing as all the deadlines have past where Nvidia should have released the 11(if even called that) series this year, most tech journalists are now speculating closer to the end of this year.

There's 0 incentive for Nvidia to release a successor to Pascal when Pascal beats Vega in performance, uses significantly less power to do so, is selling more units now than ever and is selling for more than what it did 2 years prior.

Nvidia are not good guys who want to release new GPUs to advance gaming. They are a business and also fairly predatory when it comes to market practices. If there's no competition and there's no stagnation in product sales, it would be bad for Nvidia and their shareholders to not continue milking Pascal before releasing a successor.

People on forums at this start of this year were saying how Pascal is EOL and there's no new chips being made because they knew (don't know how) that Turing/Ampere/Volta (what ever it was being called at the time) was already being printed on silicon in lithography foundries in mass and will be released in x weeks. Well - not only is Nvidia continuing to produce new silicon of 2 year old Pascal designs, they are also making new ones based on Pascal as they recently released a 1030 with a DDR4 memory controller on it.
