Sign Up for Telstra Broadband ($99/mth, No Lock-In, Modem Shipping +$9.95) & Get First Month Free @ JB HI-FI (In Store Only)

302

Was in store the other day to buy something unrelated and saw all these posters around the place for a free sign up offer from Telstra to the 99/month plan broadband.

I was wanting to swap over anyway, and it includes first month free and free modem and Telstra tv unit etc, and no lock in cost, being classed as a casual plan.

On further reading through the stuff there is a 9.95 charge for sending out of the modem and other things to the house.

I am looking to have cable connected before hfc comes to my area.

There is the ability to change tier of plans after using first free month.

All other offers from Telstra here seem to have expired.

Hope it helps some.

Oh. Sorry for late edit.

Guy who served me was pissed as well as he was ineligible for the deal as it excluded existing Telstra customers.

But then again just sign up under another family member I guess.

        • Order ended up as an error and gotta do it again in stores…

Guy on phone said some crap about it stuck in an error and they're not going to proceed with it. He said he'd place the order again and was rushing me through it, luckily I cut him off and made sure it was the same deal as jb which he said he can't do.

          Bah another trip I go…
But I'm gonna try calling jb and get the same guy ti redo it since he has the paperwork with my signatures etc already.

Edit: OK jb called them up and said everything's all good, telstra screwup and they'll fix it themselves within a few days… Sounded more professional than the actual telstra support who was just trying to make a new sale.
He swore that the jb order won't go through cause of the error, can't check/fix it cause 3rd party, doing it direct at them is faster, and there won't be any duplicate orders… Opposite of what jb said when he had to double check.

        • How long did it take?

        • @Zeral: I’m going through a similar merry-go-round, having spent almost 3 weeks trying to get the order processed. No luck yet. I’m not going to give up yet and hopefully I’ll have this thing installed soon enough. It’s Telstra who are clearly messing things up in my case…

…so I just read the T&C thanks to sjc073 above, and it says "eligibility criteria apply" but there is no clarity on whether this is limited to new customers only.
My telstra cable plan just wrapped up, which means I've been switched to the casual equivalent automatically.
Does that mean I will be able sign up to this at my local JB?
    Thanks for your thoughts!

    • new customers only… told me in store today

      • Bah, that sucks for me! Thanks ;)

Hey all, I’ve taken some photos of the deal to assist those of you who are keen on taking it on. First is the poster in the JBHifi store and the second is the flyer they post in store. Hope this solves a few questions!

  • Signed up in store yesterday.

As part of sign up process I spoke to Telstra on phone and they confirmed Foxtel Now not included because it’s the ‘casual’ plan.

Modem to be sent out for self-install.

JB Hifi staff also confirmed no need to return modem or Telstra TV if decide to cancel after first month.

Dudes… Be careful, they ended up chucking me on a 2 yr contract.

Signed up on Tuesday at jb, got an error or something at 'complete' so the order didn't go through.

Wednesday telstra placed in a new order with a new username, phone number, order number, and the normal $99 normal bundle. I double choked my account when it was completed on Friday to see it with an contract end date of 2020…

Called up telstra support and they're basically just blaming jb for negligence, not mentioning its a 2 yr contract and that they shouldn't be promoting such a thing cause all their entertainment bundles are 2 years.

Now I gotta deal with their complaints and case manager cause they don't seem to know of its existence and are blaming jb for the false advertisement or whatever.

  • Signed up today and received the following in an email titled "Here's an estimate for your order":

    • First Month Cost: $192
      • Ongoing: $99 +
      • Once Off Home Internet Entertainment: $38.32 +
      • Once Off Telstra TV2: $192 -
      • Telstra Home Internet Bundle Discount: -$137.32
      • Total First Month = $192
    • Ongoing Cost: $99

That first month cost is wrong right?

First month is meant to be FREE and no sign up charges, no package charges, no casual charges, etc etc

Could someone else ( e.g. @zootv @sjc073 @zeral ) take a look at their "Here's an estimate for your order" email and see if said the same thing?

    • All good got in touch with Telstra chat who confirmed:

I can confirm that your plan has JB Hi-Fi Bundle Offer and you are entitled for

The first month of their plan free
$0 connection fees ($99 connection fee and $120 casual plan fee waived)
$0 Telstra Smart Modem (valued at $216 on casual bundles)
$0 Telstra TV (valued at $192 on casual bundles)

Please disregard the estimated charge on the email sent as it's system generated and is automatically sending charges for the new plan. But we do have complete documentation on your account so if ever that the charges reflect on your first bill, we will manually waive it for you.

      So all good

      • My estimate was $0, was just partial fee $40 and the $99, then deduct both the 99+48 as discounts, no mention of telstra tv price, contract or anything.

Mines fixed too, after proving to them that I was on a 1 month contract, the escalation team said to ignore the contract end date and they'll put a note to waive any fees for changing/canceling the plan.

      • I am still waiting to hear anything about my install etc.
I got an email after I signed up, which said to call Telstra to get it moving. I called them and they had no idea why I was calling… TBH, neither did I. So at the end of that conversation they just said to wait and something would happen. It has been 9 days now and nothing.
I guess I need to call them again and see where it is at.

        • I just cancelled my Telstra Service, there's some BS going behind the scene where you're forced to pay $120 for canceling or changing your plan.

You're stuck with $99 a month for the life of your service or you can change to a 2 year plan, but that $120 fee will remain whether you cancel in 2 months, 1 year, or 2 years etc so gotta sort it out ASAP on what you want.

It makes no sense because of the 'no contract' part but you are forced to pay $120 regardless on what you do with the service, luckily there is a 30 day guarantee thing for me because of the NBN so I left without paying $120 in the future or renew a 2year contract.

        • @Zeral: I just had a chat with Telstra who told me that my order had not been processed properly by JBHiFi and that it would need to be redone.
The Telstra guy could not do the same deal for me and still waive all the charges.
The deal ends today, so I had better get to JB this afternoon to get it resubmitted.

        • @sjc073:
And get the exact same error again…

I got the order through by calling up JB and they followed it up with Telstra.
But seriously, if you're not okay with spending $99 a month, call up and switch to the 2 year $79 plan right away or else you're gonna have to pay an extra $120 for changing plans or canceling the service afterwards.

        • @Zeral:I got told to go back to JB and cancel the order and do it again. I have not paid anything yet, and my odrer didnt go through, so I will not be changing plans, just getting my plan set up the way it shows on the signage.

        • @sjc073:
yeah and i'm saying there's a hidden $120 for doing it like the signage… at least change it to the 24 months $99 if you want to avoid that fee in the future, or stick with it forever.

        • @Zeral: how can it be hidden? I dont want to change it to 24 months. The whole reason I am getting this deal is to get HFC connected to my house so that I am ready when NBN is available in my area. At that point I will cancel this "Monthly Plan"
Remember this is a no lock in deal.

        • @sjc073:
Tell that to Telstra, not me, I'm just giving a heads up on what may happen if you decide to cahnge plans or cancel after 30 days.

They way they interpret it is "since we didn't pay the $120 the first time around, they can charge it afterwards".

          My exact contract from JB:
"Minimum monthly charge and total minimum plan cost
Refer to the table above. Customers on a casual plan must pay
          a $120 casual plan fee."

        • @Zeral: did jbhifi print something or email something to you?

        • @kcbworth:

Yeah that's what my physical JB contract says along with the paperless contract I got from the email even though it shows

          "Minimum Term
There is a one month minimum term. Your subscription will
automatically renew each month, unless you decide to cancel it.
If you cancel the broadband service to which your Telstra
Broadband Protect service is connected, your subscription
          will also be cancelled."

It's just retarded the way they interpret it, cant take casual fee now? ok we take it later unless they renew into a 2 year contract, Meh its fine for me now anyway, i left before the '30 days'.

        • @Zeral:

Hi guys I am victim to this whole saga as well. But Telstra said that my plan although put on a 24 month contract, (which was not what I signed for) they will add a remark for me to cancel at anytime at no cost. Therefore, since im on a "24 month contract", they included Telstra TV and foxtel now.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I spent a total of 4 hours talking to telstra and this is the outcome thus far.

        • @Skysurfer88:

I got the same resolution as you did but still had to pay the $120 for canceling after 30days even though they will 'waive it'.

Basically they'll waive you for the early termination fee (months remaining/$360), but they won't waive the "$120 casual fee".

Even though the case manager assured me I can downgrade my plan or cancel before 24 months in the live chat, she worded it in a way that forces me to pay $120 for leaving after 30 days.

Lucky the bloke I spoke to read out what she wrote and gave me a jail free card with the 30 days guaranteed, he knows it's retarded as well.

Dude, although they promised you that, try changing plans with them now and see what they say.
Then go further and say what fees is there if you cancel 6 months or 2 years later, just looking out for ya.

My intent wasn't even bad, sign up to $99 first month then move down to $79… Stupid $120 casual fee, wtf is that!!!
I thought it was only when you signed up for the first time, similar to an activation fee, but they charge it for every plan change!!! Wtf!!!

  • +1

Was looking at getting the $79 casual deal. With the ridiculous casual fees I was happy to trade up to unlimited data.

Ended up ordering this Thursday 31st May in Store. Estimated activation date is Monday 4th June, will report back how it all goes.

    • My estimated date is 15 june (but that's because I don't move into my house until the 13th)

      Will also report back.

Could you share key figures from order estimate when you receive it?

      • JB guy was really helpful and used the JB internal call centre to get the ball rolling, after a while handed me onto the phone with the call centre to agree to credit checks / confirm the deal.

Order estimate received within an hour of being in store and placing order…

        First month
        +$99 internet service
        +$192 Telstra tv2
        -$100 home entertainment bundle discount
        Total listed $192

Then $99 per month after that.

This is at odds with the advertised deal so I don't take it as confirmed yet.

Reading the other comments here this appears to be standard Telstra setup process and I'm expecting it to get fixed up between JB and Telstra and amount to $0 (or very close to).

Haven't given either Telstra or JB any bank / CC details as yet. Will see what the first bill says when I get it.

  • Just received this confirmation Telstra email for the deal. The last line is a little worrying… implies I'm being charged $192 for the Telstra TV even though in the plan inclusions…?

    Home Internet Entertainment

    $ 99/mth

    Bonuses & Add-ons
    - 1 Month Free.
    - Connection charge waived.

    • Ok looks like we all got the same :)

      • How soon after going in store did you get the Telstra confirmation email?

Hope it all resolves itself when set up… if my estimated activation date of 4th June correct that would be around 2 business days! That would be super but I'll beleive it when I see it though…

I was in store at 3pm and got emails the next day. Received package with modem and Telstra tv day after

        • +1

I was in store Tuesday. Emailed order number couple of hours later. Modem and Telstra TV arrived yesterday (Thursday). Above email sent today.

Just used 24x7 Chat, who told me I have been charged for the Telstra TV because I'm on the casual plan. When I explained the JB promo, I was told they would make a note on my order for someone to call me…

Edit: I've just spoken to JB and they have told me don't stress too much about these emails as they often don't reflect their promo's. He said if there are any discrepancies after receiving the first bill, to come in and see them and they will fix it up directly with Telstra.

        • @Jeffsy:

I'm hoping one of the good things about this deal is that JB should be on our side if there's an issue with billing etc.

        • +1

@benneh: I went back in to JB yesterday and asked them to fix up my order as requested by Telstra on a 24/7 Chat.
Today I have received all the emails that I was waiting on, got my TelstraID, logged in. Got notification that all my hardware will turn up on the 5th June and that it will be installed on the 6th June.
All the appropriate price waivers were mentioned, so with any luck I will get the actual order that we all signed up for.

        • @sjc073:

          Might have to do that.

Today's the 5th. What did you get delivered? Did they deliver a Telstra TV?

My plan estimate seems 'normal', no plan waivers or anything. Bit worried this is going to be a mess.

        • @thargelios: I have had my Telstra ID created, Telstra TV delivered and Telstra came to "install" my phone line yesterday. I asked them not to, because I already have one and that is how my ADSL is connected. Didnt want them to ruin my existing internet. Still yet to have my Cable installed. Could be installed on the 11th June, but not holding my breath.
This was certainly no easy deal. I have spent hours on the phone to Telstra just to keep this on track.
I think that if my Cable was already installed, they might have finished the install by now.

        • +1

@sjc073: agree, hasn't been easy that's for sure

        • +1

          @sjc073:

Ok, same experience. I had the phone technician come and connect the phone line (new property anyway), although I was told that was the cable tech (but wasn't).

Rang Telstra yesterday afternoon and the guy finally booked in a Cable tech to come install the cable (professional install, so going to cost $240 - see if I can pass it onto the Landlord ;) ).

That's booked in for Tuesday next week (12th).

I did receive a confirmation email (update) with the technician appointment date in it. Easy to miss email though as it's simpy titled "Telstra_notifications" " Here's a summary of your Bigpond home broadband order. Inside this email is

"Your technician installation appointment date: 12/06/2018. You’ll receive confirmation by SMS the day before your technician appointment. Someone over the age of 18 will need to be home and present for the technician to connect your service."

Also received an automated call this morning from Telstra requesting confirmation.

I'd say if you haven't got the above, call them on 1800 135 103 (Cable specific phone number), press 1 and tell them you need to organise your cable install.

Now the issue for me is - there's no mention of my plan being the JB Hifi deal at all. So essentially I've just been signed up to the month to month broadband plan. No notes or nothing the guy could see to indicate any deals, promotions, fee waivers. I also haven't received the Telstra TV, only the modem and cable adapter.

So off to JB to get this crap sorted now. :( A nightmare as I'm waiting for proper internet to set up my office (just moved).

  • -2

I can't see the deal…. literally, i cannot see the deal.
No website, no link, no photo, not receipt, nothing.

Additionally no details on speed or data allowance.

Finally, other ISP's are doing similar deals for anyone, without the need to qualify.
Aussie broadband have 100/40 unlimited, no fees, no contract for $99 and are a significantly higher quality supplier than Telstra.
    Other ISP's are even cheaper.

    No deal.

    • +1
      • Fair enough, that wast the link i got when i made my post.

    • +1

Where else can I get HFC cable 3.0 for cheaper in an area that does not have NBN or Optus?

    • No NBN, unable to go with any other Naked ADSL provider (eg TPG) and no Optus / Vodafone mobile coverage. Over a year until NBN is "planned" in my area.

Ill take unlimited ADSL over paying $90p/m for 40gb of Telstra 4g internet!

  • Do you have to buy TV to ger this now?

    • +1

For some reason the online ad refers to buying a TV to be eligible, but the in-store posters make no mention of it.

  • Delivered today, all up and running - literally just unpack and plug in. Im getting better speeds on the automatic 4g backup connection but ADSL is stable and low ping.

  • Can this only be setup in store or is it available online via that link?

    • +1

      In-store only at JB.

  • I went into JB last night and received the Telstra TV and smart modem delivered today which was pretty fast. We were able to get everything up and running.
The only thing that annoys me about this deal is that if anyone wanted to move from the casual $99 to the contracted 24month $99 plan, you wouldn't be eligible for the Foxtel Now afterwards despite the deals being almost identical. The Foxtel Now is eligible for new customers only so I'm told. Just FYI for anyone deciding between the two.

  • Not a good experience here, asked about this in store and was told they would take my details as an 'expression of interest' and someone would call to get me signed up. Few hours later they sent an email confirming that I have registered interest and someone would call.

Noone called, but 5 days later I got a text saying someone would be turning up to connect it, called them to say I never ordered anything yet so they said they would cancel the contract.
Next day the modem and telstra TV arrived, so I called telstra again informing that I still haven't signed up to anything was advised I would need to post the modem back and then contact them to seek reimbursement of postage cost.

A few days later a technician turned up and connected us to the NBN (I wasn't home and my wife had no idea what was going on so didn't tell them to bugger off).

Called them back again asking WTF was going on, apparently they have signed me up to a 24 month contract without the first month free. They are claiming that someone did call me and they have a recording of me agreeing to the terms (but refused to let me hear this recording, my guess is that they called the wrong number or have me confused with someone else).

I do need to signup for an internet connection and this seems like a reasonable deal, but the whole experience has been a mess.

    • But why would you fill out a form, or give all your details to the JB staff if you were just finding out about it? Clearly the JB person didn't explain their expression of interest form, is technically their order form (their head office staff actually process the orders).

Obviously not entirely your fault, but I would have said, why do you need all my details for an expression of interest.

When I got my form filled out, the girl asked if I was ok with a credit check etc (as they have those boxes to 'tick'). I'd go back to JB and complain as they've clearly not told you what it was.

      • It's not jb man… Telstra are being dodgy about the whole thing, put on 2 yr contract, fake the call confirmation, and didn't even get the 1st month free like the promo.

Telstra obviously placed in a seperate order and the OP is kinda screwed cause they don't have a physical contract that says 'month by month no contract, and signed by jb hifi staff'

You can chase them up like I did and cancel within 30days no penalty, or stick to that 24 month contact where they'll guilt trip and blame it on you and jb for being an idiot (no joke) for offering such a thing.

But yeah best chase it up at jb because telstra will just push the blame on them anyway and say no such deal exists.

And while I'm here, I'm gonna recommend Aussie Broadband if it's for nbn. Average household usage is around 250-500gb for streaming and gaming, they're as good or if not better than Telstra with no bullshit involved.
Activation would be within 2 hrs, maybe even 30mins after you get off the phone or apply for it online.

        • It is JB not communicating with Telstra properly.

Or more likely both JB and Telstra to blame.

JB have direct access to Telstra's ordering system now (ie they place the orders IN the system), called Siebel. 1. The girl at JB showed me and I saw the screen while she was looking up my order.

So it's likely JB and Telstra, while coming up with the promo, hadn't thought through how to actually ensure it is ordered smoothly in the system.

I also got the email confirmation from JB saying we'll be in touch if we need anymore information. But they didn't call me.

JB sold the offer, so chase it up with JB to get the fix/resolution. I went in to JB yesterday to get the girl at JB to chase up and fix my order.

Yes ABB is great, I had them on my FTTP in my previous apartment. But no NBN here. Cable's the fastest option. But for NBN I'd definitely, like you, recommend ABB for their price to performance and their service which was great to me.

I think JB and Telstra (whom ever came up with this deal) hadn't actually had thought out how to place the orders in the system. That's were the screw up is.

  • Just signed up to the deal… getting a little worried now with all the comments I recently read… can I just confirm

Despite all that is advertised the fees included with this deal are:
    1. Frieght delivery charges $9.95
    2. Casual change fee of $120 - this applied regardless whether you change the casual plans or decide to cease after 30 days
    3. Foxtel now basic package is inlcuded but you lose it when you change plans

I didn't receive any email detailing my order. When will I receive it ? I just receive an estimate only…

    • @tychiang82, on your point 2, what if you leave before first 30 days, will you be charged for $120?

  • Signed up yesterday evening at JB Hi-Fi and got emails from Telstra last night confirming the order. Modem is dispatched today. Hope everything goes well.

  • Just received modem and Telstra TV after signing up on Monday. Prwtry quick.

Is the supplied modem/router any good? Or can/should I bridge it to use with existing router?

Also… Telstra TV - will I ever use this? I currently have a media centre of connected to the TV, does this offer any benefit above that?

Keen to hear thoughts for those who have tried it.

  • Also signed up for this deal today in JB - still running and I did not need to purchase a TV and I'm an existing Telstra customer.

I'm in a Velocity area however Siebel phone person stated it would be an ADSL2+ connection, however my understanding is there were no free ports at my exchange. Will be interesting to see how this pans out. $99 fee for cancelling in the first three months, first month free.

    • Others reported a casual change/cancellation fee of $120.
Can you keep Telstra TV and Smart Modem if you cancel within the first month?

      • +1

Yes. Minimum commitment of $0. There is no contract so therefore no cancellation fees.

    • Order was cancelled as JB did an ADSL order however I'm in a Velocity area. Telstra would not honour the JB deal so if you are in a Velocity area be keen to hear if you had success.

      • I have partial success at this stage (I am in Velocity area). Signed up on the 23rd July Morning, received Modem and Telstra TV on 24th, Modem up and running on mobile backup. Technician visit is scheduled for 26th July to check what is wrong with the cable.

        A BIG thanks to OP.

  • Trying to switch to the lower data ($79) plan today, and the Telstra representative is insisting that this is a 24 month contract… this is not going to be a fun process.

    • +1

I have confirmed with Telstra mine has no contract.

      • Complete run around. Kept insisting I had signed up for a 24 month plan, even when I showed them the offer (still advertised on JB's website). Went from Telstra Chat -> Telstra Phone support -> Phone complaints department. The only way that it could work in the end was to keep the unlimited plan, and they will provide a $20 a month discount for 24 months. Not a bad outcome, just a shame how this is all handled internally.

        • I am going to try that now. I checked my last month usage, it was around 200GB. 1000 Gb under $79 should be enough for me.

        • @agrawalsumit25:

I was able to switch to $79 plan without any issues using chat support.

  • Telstra is trying to make people to sign up a 24 months contract by referring to their own product summary rather than going with JB HiFi's offering. I suggest that if they insisting on sticking with their terms for the $99 entertainment bundle, it would be best to go back to JB HiFi to get the details sorted, as Telstra will just claim that they have no idea about JB's offering and/or it is no longer offered (A load of bull crap btw). They tried to get me to pay for a ETC for the Telstra TV box and the smart modem, claiming that the order entered was for a 24 months terms, but this is according to Telstra's product summary, NOT what we signed up for with JB HiFi, so I lodged a complaint with Telstra to change my plan to the $79 plan, but I should've just gone back to JB to get the terms sorted by them.

  • Can someone please confirm if this deal is still alive?
I can see on JB's website saying "Offer Available until July 2nd unless extended by us.", but the deal expires 31 Aug on OzBagain.

Signed up yesterday at JB Preston.
I will keep on updating if there is any issue with fee waiver or anything.

I got an email "Here's an estimate for your order" saying $0 for the first month. It seems in line with the contract of first month free, connection fee free, casual fee free, modem free.

Just not sure the contract length as it is not mentioned on the estimate.

      • Got a modem last night.
Activation has been done this morning.
Had a quick 24x7 Telstra chat to confirm if I am on 24 month contract like some people here.

There is no contract. Happy days.

    • Did you get the modem on the spot or was it posted out?
