  • Is this phone any good? Was going to get for dad and trs it

    • +8

I have one and it's good. Fast performance, no lag, whole day battery life (with no battery saving tricks, and all settings on high), and has a headphone jack.

      • +2

Yeah I love my Mate 9. The battery is insane, the camera is fantastic. Very very fast. EMUI is actually not bad now that they have an app drawer and when you use NOVA it's fantastic.

    • +1

This is an excellent device. Great screen, battery, speaker.
The Spigen covers looks good too, they're on ebay for <$20.

Delivery with these guys is fast too.

    • I'm still using mine. Great screen and battery life. Only downside is the fingerprint scanner seems a bit off, and maybe I'd prefer an 18:9 aspect ratio. Otherwise it's perfect. I could upgrade at any point by jumping back into another post paid plan but there's nothing out there yet that is tempting me to upgrade (at current plan prices anyway.. maybe if that recent Telstra pixel 2 xl plan was actually $49/month)

      • +1

Also, you should check out the serious dings in the sides of mine. Has survived numerous, heavy drops onto concrete/road. Probably most impressed by that aspect

    • It's great! I only have to charge it every second day, it has a metal body so it's nice and sturdy, and it doesn't have that stupid screen notch that every manufacturer and his dog are copying nowadays.

  • -1

With all the 18:9 screen phones coming out now, this looks really FAT….as in WIDE.

    • +3

the 16:9 screen ratio is actually better for media consumption. and you actually get more screen when playing video.

The new ratios sounds great in diagonals but it gives you a shorter height, so scaled to fit height, the overall playback area is smaller.

      • +1

It's usually a 16:9 area for media playback on 18:9 displays because of notches.

    • +2

Why do they call it 18:9 and not 2:1?

      • -1

Because people buy 2000W blenders and 16,000 DPI gaming mice even though the numbers indicate something that is completely useless and costs them money. Big numbers impress ignorant-to-the-subject-at-hand-which-is-most-of-us people.

      • +4

Surprised MathNerd did not catch onto this ;)
I think because people are familiar with 16:9, it is easier to visual 18:9 as being a slightly taller ratio. 2:1 although mathematically correct, would be harder for people to relate to. In the end it's all about marketing and SALES!

        • +1

          2:1 seems worse than 18:9.

        • +1

          I agree with this. 21:9, 18:9, 16:9

For some people, 2:1 sounds more like 4:3, which reminds them of CRTs

    • I prefer the fat look. Too me its proportionally more appealling.

  • +2

Just read a few reviews and the phone looks great.

Will wait until my s7 dies and I'll go for a Huawei next.

  • +3

As someone who has both the mate 7 and this one they are superb phones. Been using the mate 7 and this one for awhile now, switched from Samsung. Great value and last atleast a day or two without any tricks. I tend to set the phone brightness on lower and get a day and a half use out of it. At this price it's a steal :)

  • +3

very good phone. solid, super fast, big battery, nice screen (not AMOLED though). For that money and AUS warranty and TRS receipt I'd say the best phone you can get if you are into big fat phones with Android. Antutu speed: 170,000+.

    • I don't know how Kirin 960 compares to SD625 but the (non-fat 18:9) Sharp Aquos S2 has similar other specs (ignoring CPU) with a much better IGZO screen for less than half the price of this.

      • +3

The Kirin would crush an sd625

Huawei Australia warranty or seller's dingy repair shop warranty?

  • +1

I bought one of these about 2 weeks able
Go from the same shop. Perfect phone for my step dad who just really wants to play poker, send and receive calls and Facebook messenger. Long battery life on one of the low power settings, feels good to hold. Overall impressed. Also shipping only took 2 days to vic

Excellent phone for this price. I came from iPhone 7 to Android about 6 months ago. Sorry if I offend any iPhone user, this is not my intention. I doubt I will ever go back to iPhone rip offs again. This is solid iPhone killer for me. I spend about the half the price of iPhone and got this device. I felt really fooled that I listened to iPhone fans only in the past, android with capable devices like this are much better. This phone is very fast, has good camera, very good battery life, this also has universal remote built in (infrared) that came very handy to me. More importantly has 4g/3g dual sim and micro sd expansion if you only use one sim.(you can find tricks online to have 2 sims + micro sd working).

    • +1

Hehe I knew this since 2007 the only iPhone I had was 3GS. Been on android for ages good to see some ppl switch

  • Am I the only one who read this price as $ASS ?

    • Username checks out

      • why would you say that?

        • I don't know why..

  • Just bought one, Going overseas so this is an excellent gift, can I also claim tax back at the airport?

    • +2

      Hi alreadytaken

100% you will received a Tax invoice with Goods and its eligible for TRS.

Thank you very much for your support!

      • Hi,

I've purchased the phone via my ebay account but suddenly forgot that it was for my dad to take out of AUS for TRS. Am I able to get a name change on the invoice?

        Thanks

  • Pretty sure I've seen this phone on ozb for around 800$ with a fancy camera attachment to go with it. Amazing how quickly the things halve in price

  • I was really close to buying a Nokia 7 Plus from ebay for the same price until I saw this. Mate 9 is a flagship and mostly has better specs than 7 Plus (faster CPU, Cat12 LTE compared to Cat6, 12/20MP camera with OIS compared to 12/13MP EIS). The deciding factor for me comes down to the OS support. Nokia has Android One and should receive updates for 3 years, but I'm worried about the recent news from Huawei about no longer supporting bootloader unlocks.

Any recommendations on which to go with?

    • +3

If you're concerned about longevity, the Nokia is your best option. Battery life would be just as great on the 7+. Regarding unlocking the bootloader of the Mate 9, IIRC, devices released after May 24 will not be unlockable and existing devices' bootloaders will still be unlockable within 60 days after the announcement.

      • Thanks for the info on the bootloader. My last phone was a Nexus 5x so I do like having the latest stock android. Not sure if I want to mess with the Mate 9 and try to have it run stock 8.1.

But I also want to get the best bang for buck so it's a tough choice between the 7+ and Mate 9 at the same price.

  • Huawei Mate 9 OR Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 (Global Version) 4GB/64GB (Dual Sim) ?

    • mate 9 for me. it's a former flagship device. Premium build. redmi note 5 is a middle of the road, good value device (sorry users).

  • Will Huawei Australia honor the warranty for this?

    • Hi SydneySurvivor,

Yes, full 24 months warranty through Huawei Australia.

  • Can anyone recommend a good shockproof case for this at a great price? Thanks in advance 😊

  • This or Nokia 7 plus?

    • Nokia 7 Plus every time! Got one off eBay (Aus stock) for $418.74 on eBay (private seller). Haven't looked back since and it's just as fast (except gaming) as any of the flagships - no lag :)

  • Does it have the power button in the same place as the Mate 8 which I have? It's stupidly on the side almost in the middle and I'm unintentionally rebooting the phone A LOT just from gripping it while carrying it around.

  • Saw this in Officeworks for $300 a month or so ago. I should have bitten the bullet.

PSA: The Oreo update for the Aussie IMEI Mate 9 seems to have introduced some Bluetooth and screen dimming issues. Bluetooth appears to be resolved (with a minor update), but screen dimming issue is still ongoing for some users. Mobileciti/Allphones Mate 9 stock should still be on Nougat. Please research carefully before committing to the Oreo update.

Other than that, great battery, great camera, great phone (I haven't updated to Oreo yet).

    • LOL the Vodafone Oreo update isn't actually out yet haha. Vodafone are the worst.

      • Wow that's pretty bad. Optus got theirs in March iirc, and unlocked stock (JB/HN/Mobileciti) had updates in April.

  • Phone's price gone back up to $584.80.
