As someone who purchased a lifetime pass a few years ago, I'd advise against it.

The development focus at plex has changed so drastically the last couple of years and they are spread so thin supporting many new apps that most things don't work as they should. However the developers don't care as they already have your $ and have no prospect in getting any more from you

The care only for cool new features that will attract new users. Trouble is they don't even stick with these new features long enough to make sure they work well, because they are already working on something else

Just my 2c, but I imagine if you get the monthly or annual pass most people will save money as they will decide to stop 'supporting plex' before they spend $75US

    • I was wondering about exactly this after I read the OP. Thanks for adding your opinion, valuable feedback for me.

    • Wish I read your comment before I went lifetime last month. Should have done monthly to confirm it can do what I want it to.
I thought I could setup a media server for my housemates and Airbnb visitors. Turns out they all still need a paid app and account to access. Lame.

No that is not the case, you create the users under your account and email out the links,or just use internal users.

It’s quite flexible actually no additional licensing for users or devices is typically required.

I do agree with Mal86’s comments recent updates and features are all over the place

    • I still prefer it to emby, which I ran before they shit the bed. I got tired of the 'please get premium' popup before every episode/movie. Premium does get you better user management (much better than the 'sharing' I'm doing with the free version), and it gets you hardware transcoding, which is useful for some people.

Do you have plans to move to emby?

    • As someone who's been on the fence about getting a lifetime pass, thanks heaps. I can do without it.

  • If anyone has a code they’re not going to use can you send it my way please?

    • Codes are locked to the account, and are constantly going out to random people. Not much point posting a deal really given it’s such a random allocation.

Edit: to add you’re best bets probably just to create a bunch of accounts at different addresses and hope one gets randomly selected for the promo. Going off the past it doesn’t seem like there’s any real usage pattern defining who gets allocated a code.

Normally I wouldn't post a targetted deal but when it was posted in December it seemed like a few people all got it around the same time. I was one of them but missed out and figured that maybe the codes would be just as widespread this time

Same here, if anyone has a spare code they don't want. Could you please PM me? Thanks

Plex is going down the pooper

    • Still use plex and kodi (different use cases). It’s not that plex is bad or not being developed, less need for most people now we have streaming services.

  • Wasn’t this free in the past?

    • There free features. A subscription enables some things that users may or may not want. For local streaming it’s oretty functional in the free version.

      • Free also work for remote streaming.

  • Unlike others I find it works incredibly well for our needs, which if generally local streaming. Only real complaint is the various apps get updated at different times so inevitably have different UIs. Not a big drama but it’s something we notice.

I bought a lifetime pass recently after receiving the code in my email. It coincided with a request to be added to the beta testing group for Android TV I think. I've been using Plex for about 8 years so I figured I had my money's worth of use already, even without the Plex pass features.

  • I'm sure I was previously able to use the Plex app on my phone to stream from my server - now it says I need to buy a pass to use it…still works fine on the TV but was annoyed when I went to use it recently on holiday but found I was essentially locked out

    • Yeah (profanity) those guys and their free product.

  • What features do people use most from their plex pass subscription?

If it’s just offline sync then I found Infuse app (IOS) works well without the need for plex pass. It also reads stuff from NAS shares and the cloud. There’s a premium version but I’ve never had a need to pay for it.

    • I did this as I was enjoying using it.

My wife likes the extras it can add, and I also like the multiple users, not sure that's a thing on the free one…

      • +1

Yeah I think single user only on free, but it's only me using it. :D
I'm more of a Netflix user these days though - so much more convenient…

I wanted to get it purely for the option to use Hardware Accelerated streaming. I have an i3 6100 3.70GHz cpu and a nvidia 1060 6GB. I'm not sure if I will benefit from it as the sole user of my account. I'm going to run some tests today using 4k and x265 content

      • Well the first thing I've tested has fallen over. Trying to play a 19gb 4k movie and it stops to load on occasion and the picture quality degrades which is weird considering my settings are set to force maximum or 1:1 playback. I also had some issues with smaller file size 4k x265 episodes of a tv show during what might have been a couple of rare visually complex scenes.

I'm sure it's my cpu and not my network as task manager is showing 99% usage during playback and the majority of that is the plex transcoder.

I wonder if I can ask the Plex people to let me trial the plex pass to see if the HA streaming option improves playback for me or not

        • 1:1 does not guarantee against transcoding. If you are transcoding, that is the bottleneck. My plex media server plays bluray rips just fine, it's the media player that can cause the problem by not having the codec.

  • I think they do half price once or twice a year. Then is the best time to buy it. Though I haven't gotten the most out of it just yet but I do like that feature where it plays trailers when me and my partner need to decide on what movie to watch (maybe that is in the free version).

    • You can switch the trailers on/off in the settings, even for free version.

  • can someone enlights and tell me what it does? I generally chromecast my movie to the tv, do i need this?

    • what do you use to play movies through your chromecast? does it happen to be something other than the videostream add-on or vlc?

      • generally Stan and Netflix lol. Do people download their Netflix and Stan movies then put it on Plex?

        • Netflix and Stan libraries are so limited.
So I guess people still download movies.

        • Plex is a media server. You put your own movies (and music and photos if you want) on it and you get something that resembles Netflix in a way but with your own media.

It’s best suited to where you have an always on PC or a device that supports Plex which is always on. Other devices like your phones, gaming consoles etc can then connect to it to play the files. You can also access them away from home without taking the PC.

I run it and all my media is my DVD and BluRay collection I copied to the PC. It can also to recording off tv and a few other things.
