Care to share more details? The bottle necks exist on both the source reading speed and destination write speed plus how good the USB controller is for stability. And how do you manage the split of backup files between multiple drives?

      Yeah sure.

      • USB 3 is not the bottleneck as it's faster than disk writes at around 100MB per disk.
      • I have 2 running right now at avg 110MB/second each. These are large video files.
      • Writing is always slower than reading, but ideally read from different disks in parallel so the head stays still.

So with only 2 running can easily get 200Mb+. More than a single 8TB.

      The USB stability is good.

  • Personally wouldn't use a portable as my first backup…. the only externals that have failed on me are portables. Must be said none lately though.

    • Thats why you buy three and have three back ups :)

    • My experience with any hard disk reliability, shows the main risk is heat. I think some of the cases on any portable type disks (3.5 or 2.5) let them heat up too much.

Since I worked this out I always sit them over mesh (on top of a PC) or a dedicated laptop platform. Can get them for a few bucks at MSY.
When installing Hard Disks in a PC I make sure they are right against a fan.
I've had very few problems (actually I think none) with any hard disks since.

  • or wait for an xbox x norman offer?
