  • This would be amazing if you could also put a sim in it. Any ideas on the best 4g routers?

Just bought the TP-Link TL-MR6400 for home fail-over. Works superbly :-)

  • I have Xiaomi Router 3, is it worth getting this ?

    • +1

what is the upgrade over the 3?

      • This is still a 2t2r router so that's why you still see 300 max on 2.4

      • 1000Mb/s vs 100Mb/s Ethernet ports/switch.
        0 vs 1 USB ports.
        MediaTek MT7621A vs MT7620 SoC.

        • Ahhh, no deal for me then. I love the usb port on 3. Thanks!

  • How does this compare to the standard issue optus sagemom ADSL modem?

    • It is not a modem so doesn't do ADSL. So you'd also need an ADSL modem.

  • is this work with nbn? (fttp)

    • Yes I am interested too with FTTP NBN? Thanks

Do 4 antennas mean 4x internet speed? Asking for a friend

    • This is a wifi router, makes no difference to internet speed unless your wifi is the bottle-neck to the speed of your internet (which isn't normally the case).

  • The WiFi range and penetration on these is great. Daughter said she still had WiFi two houses down on the other side of the road.

    • I know it’s counterintuitive, but high power AP is bad neighbourliness and detrimental to bandwidth. You’re sharing a channel with every neighbour whose signal is sufficiently high to be detected and only one transmitter can do it at a time.
You want your to AP to transmit as little power as is needed to receive reliably without receiving your neighbours’ transmissions, and same for your neighbours.
Think of a crowded room of people metaphor - you don’t want everyone shouting.

      • Yeah I understand. I was excited to have reliable WiFi for a change. My old Netgear D6300 could barely make it to our bedroom upstairs on 2.4Ghz, and sitting in the car in the driveway had my phone jerking around on 1 bar while Waze tries to connect. This Xiaomi one is 5 bars in the bedroom and in the car on 2.4Ghz, 3-4 bars on 5Ghz.

There are three signal strength modes: Wall Penetration, Standard and Energy Saving. I believe the channel is automatic, I don't see any settings for it in the app and I don't recall if it scanned for best channel on initial setup. But using a WiFi analyser app I can see that it is on a channel by itself, visible from my house anyway.

It has a heap of add-in stuff like filtering, scheduling, QoS etc; but I run mine in plain AP mode.

I recommend it if your house is bad for WiFi signal. This or Powerline extenders.

  • does it require internet and xiaomi login to function, like all other xiaomi hardware?

    • You need the Mi Router app to configure it, there is no web interface. I assume you need a Xiaomi account as well, this app just picked up my account automatically. Not sure if it needs access to the cloud server on bootup.

I can see in my untangle box, the xiaomi router is hitting api.miwifi.com checking config and firmware updates very frequently. About every hour it sends about 1KB to /action at that address. So it doesn't look like its sending your nudes back to china, but I guess they could change that whenever they felt like.

—Edit— I'll try blocking it and see if it screws up.

      • Update: Yeah the WiFi falls over after a while if you block the Xiaomi router from talking to the cloud server.

        • Excellent information. Thank you! There’s no way this is for me (or for anyone mindful of privacy).

        • @AlexF: Yeah. More information on that. Mine is a Xiaomi Mi WiFi 3G, this is the next version 4. There is support for the 3G version at openWRT (custom firmware), but not the 4 version yet. People are inquiring about it on their forums and the hardware is quite similar, so it probably won't be long. here is thread talking about it.

I'm going to go flash mine now.

      • Wow! Nice (or not so nice) find !!!
        Thanks for sharing
