  • Hmm this or ANOVA?

    • +4

My pick would still be the ANOVA:

      • offers far more flexibility as you're not constrained to the 5L vessel size

      • easier to clean, maintain and store

      • more programming options/control (though, personally, I don't bother with the app)

      YMMV, of course.

EDIT: Talking about the sous vide use case here as I have a basic, cheap n cheerful Sunbeam slow cooker.

        • and takes up much less cupboard space
    • If you want a multi-use device, AND you don't have an oven you can trust to slow cook in, get this. An oven and a cheap cast-iron-and-enamel Dutch oven from Aldi will get you much better results on stews etc., due to the brown stuff ("fond") that builds up on the sides of the cast iron pot.

Otherwise, get the Anova - it's much more accurate (which is what sous-vide cooking is really about), and it's way better on steaks, chicken breasts, fish etc. Plus, you can stick the Anova in an Esky and cook a whole rack of ribs/brisket at once, if you're so inclined.

(This seems to be the same unit that Aldi (and about fifty other companies re-badge and sell) and if so it's not super-accurate.)

Yeah the anova also circulates the water.

        • the sunbeam doesn’t circulate water which is the turn off for me ….. i belive kogan has a 10 litre sous vide that does circulate ….. i have an anova but insulated vessel would be good …esky or used foam fruit box is looking tempting .

"…you can stick the Anova in an Esky and cook a whole rack of ribs/brisket at once…"

This. If you need to cook for a large group of people and want to take some of the stress out of things, the Anova plus an Esky is a winner!

        • I heard an Esky would leech into the food?

        • +1

@mazuko: No mate. You sous-vide the food you're cooking in sealed bags.

        • @OzDJ_: mmmm a hint of esky

        • @TarquinOliverNimrod: Nice with some basil and oregano, I'm told.

    • ANOVA

      • anova …. there are lots of other units readily available now and some with higher wattages.

        • like? joule is the other big name but no avail in Australia

  • Anyone know if Gerry will price match to Amazon?

Thanks for the tip OP. Picked up the bread maker for $42.99 due to $20 Amazon gift certificate for the cancelled Baby Love nappies order credit from earlier this year.

I will never buy a Sunbeam again. The quality is terrible.i bought a kettle and a toaster and parts started coming off after a few months. Plastic bits inside my kettle and tray on my toaster. The looks and the price are great but definitely lacking in quality.

    • +1

They're defintely built to a price these days. That said, it's obviously a case of YMMV.

I have a cheap and cheerful Sunbeam slow cooker. Must be more than five years old now and, notwithstanding some surface rust spots on the…errr…"stainless" steel, it's holding up really well considering the thrashing it gets.

      • most things are now built to not be serviceable due to risks of people trying to fix themselves and electric shocks and cost of labour and round trips makes service centres also not cost effective .

throw away an item it’s a short conversation, if service centre wants $100 for fix you will tell your friends and brand gets a bad name.

my breville smart toaster $170, died after 2-1/2 years …..breville don’t keep or sell spare parts …. I asked customer service “so what lm supposed to throw away a $170 toaster” they responded “ we can’t tell you what to do with out of warranty item”.

element was dead …… sort of things you could buy as spare years ago.

  • Anyone have any experience with the Bread Maker? or any recommendations for other bread makers?

  • Can an Anova be used as a slow cooker?
