Sohl Glass Display Cabinet $99.99 @ ALDI Special Buys

1780

A long-time OzBargain member and regularly active on Computing deals, but my first post is on Home & Garden lol.

As a custom keyboard + figure collector, I have been looking for a glass display container to showcase them after IKEA discontinued the Detolf. Same price as last year in August on Aldi Special Buys (according to this link), only shows up in August, so if stocks run out you may need to wait another year — so hurry up.

IKEA's alternative to Detolf is the Blaliden at $129, which is smaller (35x32x151 vs 42.5x36.5x162) and has a black/white frame instead of being frameless, which can obstruct views. The most similar and available option in Australia compared to this deal/Detolf would be the Vision Glass Display Cabinet at $169 in Fantastic Furniture, there are other clones on other sites but they are more expensive.

So what can you display with this shelf? Pretty much anything: hot toys cars/figures, mechas, anime figures, LEGO, dolls, keyboards… One thing to note is that Aldi doesn't show the weight capacity per shelf for this item yet, but for reference: Detolf is 5kg (old version)/3.5 kg (new version), Blåliden is 3kg, and Vision is 10kg (as stated on their site, though I don't recommend putting that much). Any owners of this Aldi shelf, if possible, please comment on how similar this is to the Detolf as well as the weight capacity per shelf.

Product Details:
* Assembled size: 42.5 cm(W) x 36.5 cm(D) x 1.62 m(H)
* Tempered glass
* Adjustable shelves
* Lockable with 2 keys included
* Wall affixing hardware included

This is my first post, so if anything is wrong, please feel free to correct me.

Any larger sizes? I’ve got a lot of participation awards

    • +20

I have a lot of glass display cabinets to display

      • +2

It’s glass cabinets all the way down.

    • +3

You can get the Stacked 2 column or 3 column cabinet or simply get multiple from this deal and arrange them next to each other.

      • +1

I have this Stacked 2 column one. Only issue with single side by side is that they don't fit such Lego like the Bugatti etc.

Bought from Sello on eBay for somewhere around low $200 some time back if I remember by using the eBay codes.

If you're in a rush and need it now, they have the 17% off DAD17 code for eBay Plus members which gets it to around ~$300.

Edit: Actually better here as no postage cost!

    • +10

Any opaque cabinets? I have much to hide.

      • +4

Just use the closet like other people

    • +2

I came last, and nine months later, I still received an award.

    • +1

Really I though it for all the ozbargains you are never going to use

    • +1

Any deal on the participation awards? Looking to fill my cabinets.

      • +1

I was wondering how many wooden spoons this can fit

    • +1

Its the perfect size for the wife to fit in!

  • +9

This is nice ! Bring back Detolf design

    • +2

Looking for this comment! Aldi capitalising on the discontinued Ikea Detolf. Smart move.

      • +1

If they actually capitalize on this then probably would have list it as an all season product, not on special buys. Vision cabinet is the cheapest one you can get all the time in Australia, and it costs way much more than Detolf makes me think it's not that in demand.

        • +1

Aldi isn’t a furniture store. They aren’t going to sell a display cabinet as an “all season product”.

          • @ak47wong: I'm not talking about Aldi specifically but this type of glass display cabinet in general. If there are such a demand then multiple furniture store would have stocks them with better price. The reality is that only 1 store stocks them all year round at nearly x2 the price of the og Detolf, then what type of capitalising we are seeing here lol.
IKEA discontinued Detolf despite multiple backlash and still continue do so further prove this. If Detolf making profits for them why they even change that?

  • -5

    Is it pest proof. ANTS.

Tempered to what rating…. Bump it with the vacuum,,,

    • +4

It is not stopping ants, the gaps are considerable

    • +3

For this kind of shelf which is mostly glass IMO dust proof is more a concern than pest proof, there are gaps that dust can get into so same with ants

About the tempered glass, I guess do your own research and pray for the best. There are multiple incidents of Detolf or any display glass shattered, so there are always a risk using a glass display shelf/cabinet to display expensive items. IKEA Billy and its clones are other options if you value durability more than unobstructed views.

      • +1

This was a nightmare shifting last house move! And be very careful during assembly. Helps a LOT if it's assembled right where it's going to sit.

I'll be getting one as you described if I ever buy similar again.

  • +10

    Might buy two.

I’ve got a lot of pets I’ve taxidermied.

    And collectable dildos.

    • +1

Would you mix the collections? Or have one for each?

    • +11

You like stuffed things don't ya.

    • +1

      And collectable dildos.

Tell me more, asking for a friend

    • +7

I’m imagining an unhinged Venn diagram RN

    • +2

"And collectable dildos." So long as you are not throwing them onto basketball courts…

      • basketball

        Idea for a YouTube channel

        Elaborate collectible trick shots

    • Stuff that!

    • I don't think your bad dragon dildos are going to fit in here.

    • Are any of the pets yours? If not, how did you deal with annoyed neighbours, or did you just tell them to get stuffed?

    • +21

i swear people come on here and post the most f*kin asinine comments. if you don't like the deal, guess what, you don't have to leave a comment

      • +1

You have to leave a comment to vote negative though 😕

    • Is everything ok buddy? Genuinely

  • +6

    Straight to the pool room

  • +5

A few of these will make any home look like $10 million dollars. Don't forget to get some doilies too.

  • +1

im looking for something to display the family bible would this be suitable

    • +6

You know what, even as an atheist myself, if my family had a "Family Bible" that was 100's of years old, I'd definitely be putting that on display. I've seen a few German family bibles that go back 300 - 400 years and they are just amazing bits of family history.

  • +1

Would be great if it came with built in lights.

    • +2

I think it's better without built in lights to keep the cost down and the ability to customize your own lighting choice. IKEA Blaliden has a built in light option which is kinda meh to me

  • +3

I have a decent collective of hotwheels 2 wheelers. Time to pull trigger

  • Perfect case to put all my ozbargain trophies into.

  • +2

+1 for including your detailed research.

I didn't know IKEA discontinued the Detolf. I have one and always wanted to buy a few more once I am living in my own house (as the Detolf is fragile to move around), but it's been ~9 years now and I'm still renting and not living in my own house…

  • Can it fit wwe replica belts?

    • +5

Unfortunately not, you will require a specialized cabinet designed for the storage and maintenance of virginity.

      • +1

One with a chastity lock on it

    • You mean you don’t also mount these casually in the hallway and wait for guests to comment on them?

  • +5

Gen Alpha is going to be so disappointed in the future. The rest of us boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z got inherited, property, gold, shares, money……they get "custom keyboard"

    • +6

Millennial here, we're getting boomers china cabinets and other assorted junk.

    • +4

You guys are getting property, gold, shares, money?

      • You guys are getting "custom keyboard"?

    • -1

Custom keyboard is really just the replaceable switch, and it just means you don't need to throw it out when one of the switches starts dying. That in my eyes is a money saver, which means you should spend more on it… to last longer. (Though we all know how this rabbithole really ends)

  • +5

Perfect for my investment grade labubus

  • +1

Not "Frameless"…… the frame is just behind the glass and is a chrome/silver post on each edge… it's just hard to see in the photo. For example, the fantastic furniture one isn't like this.

    • You are correct, both this one and Detolf has inside "racks" to support the shelf. Which is why I'm curious to see that Vision cabinet having no internal frame but twice the load capacity on each shelf

  • Is the weight mentioned for each level yeah?

    • Yes, for Blaliden/Vision it's on IKEA/Fantastic Furniture site. For Detolf there's no official description on IKEA anymore since it's discontinued but it's easy to search for the information

      • interesting, only ask because i bought this wine cabinet from coco republic which is discontinued now but I didn't find out how it could hold per shelf.
and i've been putting my alcohol collection in it and its pretty packed.. and got the wife saying its going to collapse lol so yeah i really need to find out how much each shelf can hold (before it collapses my endless alcohol collection lol)

  • +2

I wonder if this would be good for plants and a humidifier.

  • +1

I've literally been waiting forever for one of these aldi shelves to go on sale ever since the detolf was discontinued. The blaliden is not even a good replacement, I think this is as close to the original detolf out there.

    • +1

i have both and imo this is better. its better built and the shelves have different height adjustments

      • So you have this aldi one + detolf or aldi one + blaliden? Because most people consider Detolf the best budget glass display container so I want to know how similar this aldi one is compares to Detolf. Also do you know the weight capacity per shelf?

    • This cabinet is the only reason I go to aldi special buys and checking if they restock them early, and I do this since October last year. Good news is that it is restocked, bad news is that it takes a full year lol.
If this aldi shelf not coming back my best choice would be Vision cabinet but they are 70% more expensive.

      • +1

ALDI have this on sale once a year as part of father's Day specials.

  • +5

Have I misinterpreted something? I don't see how keyboards can fit in shelves this narrow :P

    • Sorry but why the hell would you be displaying keyboards? Have I missed a trend or something?

      • +1

Because when people collect anything as a hobby they want to display it, not necessary to everyone but as a decoration/achievement kind of thing. Check this as an example.

        • Why do people collect keyboards? Why would you need more than 1?

          • +1

@Broden: Because they can afford to and they like it? You can ask the same question for pretty much everything. There are people owning planes, houses, cars…. many thing more expensive at the amount that they never fully use and they have their own reasons.

          • +4

@Broden: Why would you need more than 1 ps3?

    • +1

75% layout or smaller keyboard can fit easily, maybe not for TKL/1800s/Fullsize ones

Shame ikea went backwards on the detolf.
From around 2014 i purchased Billy bookcases of all sizes and detolf.
I own 13 detolf glass cabinets from ikea, the first 10 had the sturdy thicker glass and brown/black in colour.
I believe one white detolf I got from ikea was similar to the other back brown ones with ticker glass.
It was years after I did not know ikea stopped doing them and picked up two second hand ones from a seller nearby, and it was only then I noticed the went cheap on the glass thickness which sucked big time.

My black/brown detolf from back in the day hold some heavy items which cost a bit of money and yes it did worry me hearing they can just explode.
But touch wood 11 years on they are still damage free and have been in 3 house moves, where I never took them apart just removed inner glass shelf’s.

I have many Billy bookcases surrounding the walls of a bedroom of the black/brown and that was the colour I went for back in 2014.
They was a bit of a mix supposed have gone cheap on these over time.
I have since purchased white bill bookcases to use in another area in house.
I also purchased the glass cabinet which is like two detolf together from fantastic furniture, it feels quality but I have kept the weight on each shelf to below what it’s recommended.
But ikea detolf was a good seller and bit backwards no longer selling them, they went cheap on them first which made no sense then then come out with outter garbage as a replacement.

I really don’t know who sells detolf style glass cabinets these days maybe red dot? Aldi listed here and fantastic furniture.
Ikea was the go to when they did these and and did not make same but stronger etc just some otter ugly crap.

But with owning the ikea stuff from 2014 onwards I don’t have complaints.
Never owned the Aldi ones but did like the idea of the locks on them.

    • I had no idea Ikea got rid of Detolf. I have a few of them, still going strong after ten or so years.

I did have one mishap, I was building one on tiles and accidentally tapped one of the sides on the tiles right on the corner of the glass and the whole thing instantly exploded.

I went to Ikea to ask for a replacement side, they said they don't have any. They said if I could repack the rest I could get a refund… so I bought another one and just slid out one side then returned the rest. Way easier than trying to repack.

I use Ikea's Besta, made it dust proof with Bunnings weather strip seals around the doors.
Can use either glass or wood shelves.

    • Besta/Billy with glass shelves + glass doors is a good combo and maybe even better than the full glass cabinet when looking at the front view.

  • +1

This may be an option for corners…

    https://amzn.asia/d/hWcAIrH

    Fast and Furious, vibes though

  • +1

I've had great success on Facebook marketplace for these. If you are patient, you can pick them up second hand for $50

  • +2

This smashed very easily while being put together, like my father who has built quite a lot went to put on one of the doors, and I was quite certain at first it was human error but after seeing it, it was a faulty product sadly. We got a full refund fortunately as it essentially broke in his hand lmao.

  • +4

Looks good, especially with the lock.
Pay attention to the glass thickness though, if it's like the later versions of the detolf, there were many cases of the glass suddenly shattering or crumbling away after a few years.

Happened to me on one of mine, I have several others that are unaffected. The back glass suddenly cracked and crumbled everywhere. Thankfully it didn't implode on itself, but feels like it was about to.
Wasn't storing much weight (just display figures) and I was careful when assembling it not to over-tighten, as when I got them there had been some reports of them shattering and it was thought to be from over-tightening.

Also, definitely do something for dust-proofing.

These sorts of display cabinets look really good, especially if you add some LED strips (which is how I stumbled across this years ago. Wire the LED strips to something them like a WLED box or even a dimmer switch from Aliexpress.

    • You probably overtightened the frame causing pressure. Have read this happening heaps of times

      • I was careful when assembling it not to over-tighten, as when I got them there had been some reports of them shattering and it was thought to be from over-tightening.

It's something I was very conscious of when assembling.

        • The other thing could be is if your floor is not level it'll cause stress

  • A PC fan can be used to help dust-proof a display case by creating a positive pressure environment, where air is blown out, preventing dust from entering through small openings.

However, it's crucial to ensure the fan doesn't draw in more dust than it expels and to consider the fan's location and airflow direction.

    • Theres quite considerable gaps, you might need to seal it better first before doing such a thing.

  • Have one of these that I grabbed for $50 due to leftover clearance. Quite heavy so preferable to have someone assist to carry/assemble

  • +1

These never look nice when I see them in people's homes.

    • +2

Is it because it is too reflective? 😂

  • Are they stable or they need to be fastened to a fixed structure?

    • +1

This kind of glass cabinet always have anchoring tools, and it's up to you to use it or not. If you are living with pets/children or uneven floor, it's better to screw it into a fixed structure to prevent tripping/collapsing hazard. If no one touch your cabinet and don't want to permanently fixed it to one place, then you can leave it be.

If you lay it flat, great habitat for pet mice or rats! https://www.libertyfoundation.org.au/rats-mice/build-a-first…

  • -2

Are this glass displays 101% dust free?
    Tight air lock?
    101%?

    • Is this a joke comment because lots of replies above said that this is not dust free
