Sohl Glass Display Cabinet $99.99 @ ALDI Special Buys

1780

A long-time OzBargain member and regularly active on Computing deals, but my first post is on Home & Garden lol.

As a custom keyboard + figure collector, I have been looking for a glass display container to showcase them after IKEA discontinued the Detolf. Same price as last year in August on Aldi Special Buys (according to this link), only shows up in August, so if stocks run out you may need to wait another year — so hurry up.

IKEA's alternative to Detolf is the Blaliden at $129, which is smaller (35x32x151 vs 42.5x36.5x162) and has a black/white frame instead of being frameless, which can obstruct views. The most similar and available option in Australia compared to this deal/Detolf would be the Vision Glass Display Cabinet at $169 in Fantastic Furniture, there are other clones on other sites but they are more expensive.

So what can you display with this shelf? Pretty much anything: hot toys cars/figures, mechas, anime figures, LEGO, dolls, keyboards… One thing to note is that Aldi doesn't show the weight capacity per shelf for this item yet, but for reference: Detolf is 5kg (old version)/3.5 kg (new version), Blåliden is 3kg, and Vision is 10kg (as stated on their site, though I don't recommend putting that much). Any owners of this Aldi shelf, if possible, please comment on how similar this is to the Detolf as well as the weight capacity per shelf.

Product Details:
* Assembled size: 42.5 cm(W) x 36.5 cm(D) x 1.62 m(H)
* Tempered glass
* Adjustable shelves
* Lockable with 2 keys included
* Wall affixing hardware included

This is my first post, so if anything is wrong, please feel free to correct me.

    • and what is 101%? You want it to repel dust?

        • 101% = 100% + 1%

        • Dust as in dust covering my model planes and boats.

      • Counting the number of negs I am getting for just asking a question makes me think someone doesn't accept criticisms at all.
        Head in the sand syndrome?

        Sad and disappointing.

        • Head in the sand syndrome

Sorry to hear about your syndrome.

If you read the comments before your post you'll see that it is already answered.

          • @CodeXD: You wrote that already.
What is wrong about asking again about dust?
What is wrong about highlighting once again that is not dust proof but just another gimmicky display

Why are so touchy about it?

            • @LFO:

              You wrote that already.

No I didn't, it was someone else.

              • @CodeXD: You did write that someone wrote about dust issue before.

                Done and dusted now.

                • @LFO: Ha! I see what you did there! Totally left him in your dust

Time to bust out my vintage Star Wars toy collection. Form an orderly queue, ladies.

  • Anyone tried these before? how does hold up to kids running around 😀

    • +4

Can only hold 1 kid. No running.

  • wonder if this can be used as a terrarium

  • Do these sell out fast or can I wait until weekend to buy it?

    • Got one when Aldi just open, Came in again @ 12:35pm and they all gone at my local

      • Damn looks like I will need to try get one today

    • I saw 20 stacked at my store. 6 had sold by midday. Don't wait weekend

  • I ended up getting one, was gonna get two but wow these things are heavy I wasn't going to risk navigating the shopping centre carpark with two of these hanging off the trolley. (FYI the box is 40kg).

  • +1

For reference, I just go to my nearest Aldi today and the employee even said that we shouldn't put it on the trolley because it can break easily lol. Also they advise to have a SUV at least to fit it on (we only have a sedan), therefore have to leave empty hand.
Gonna return with my cousin's SUV to get it, good news is that my store still have around 20 units so maybe none have been sold yet

    • If not a trolley then what will you put it on to get it to your car? Also I got mine in a sedan with all seats down….

      • Yeah I take that trolley advice meant to be extra careful with it, main reason is I don't want to risk it with the sedan. Also I go with my sister and don't want to cause her too much trouble lol

      • +1

Ask them for the flat trolley, not the regular shopping trolley

      • Just return today and yes, need to ask them to bring out the flat trolley for anyone doesn't know. They will ask you to leave an ID to bring the trolley out to parking and will return when you bring the trolley back (I guess trolley theft is a serious issue for Aldi). Grab 2 for myself, that should be enough till next year sale in case I want more.

  • Anyone got one assembled yet? Decent quality?

    • +2

i have 4 of them purchased years ago. they are better than ikea detolfs

      • Agreed , better than detolfs. Also comes with a lock so if you have kids , they cant open it.

      • So, do you use all 4 of them… or….

I waited till the weekend ( though it's not as though sI had a choice)

        :(

I was amazed of the weight of this, hard to figure out how you were supposed to get it out of the store. Picked up 2 and had to go into the store twice as couldn’t get 2 in a trolley. Got home and lugged them upstairs, that was enough for today :).

  • Picked up one from my local Aldi yesterday. Saw a few other people picking them up as well using the flat trolley. Yep, it's heavy.

Solid build though and great quality. Unfortunately my wife thinks the colour doesn't match my daughters room (all white and pink).

Pay extra 70 bucks and get your wife this then, bottom and top is white

      • Yep, that's one of my options as well - was holding off a bit on it due to the price lol - although am keeping an eye on FB Marketplace as well - just a bit weary picking up these glass cabinets and transporting them in back of car.

        • Just manage to snatch 2 at home for me. How hard for you to assemble it and do you need 2 people to do that?

          • @Masticccc: Nice one! Yeah you would need 2 people for the step where you connect the rear glass panel to the side one. One person to hold the rear panel while you connect the side panel to the rear with the plastic connecting strip.

            Overall, not hard at all.

            • @Mingles: It takes me nearly 3 hours to assemble it and still not done, I think my components have some issues:
              1. The plastic strip is instructed to attached to the back glass panel first, then the side glass panel later. I spend nearly an hour try to do that but no luck, then I reverse the order to attach the side panel before the back panel and it works in a minute or two lol. Like some weird plastic tolerance cause this.
              2. The magnet parts J intended to hold the door when closed doesn't fully fit in the hole designed for it, only 1/3 of the length. From the design I think it needs to be drilled/hammered to fully fit, which is weird consider you don't want to do that with the glass panel already installed. For reference, the hinge supports of the door was very easy to fitted in the designated hole, it should be the same case with the magnets imo. Do you experience the same issue?

The 2 concerns above + the fact that all the parts aren't labelled with their packages make the assembling process like a torture, even though it's not hard in technical. I guess this is the reason why this Aldi cabinet is so cheap comparing with their clones.

              • @Masticccc: Yep, I had the same issues but quickly overcame them. I thought my glass panels were cut too narrow because the plastic strip wasn't lining up with the grooves on the base wooden piece, but realised just had to turn the strips around the right way. Yes, it was a little hard to put them in but wasn't too bad.

One of the magnet pieces I had to use a rubber mallet to knock it in as the hole was very tight… so same issue as you. Annoying but these things don't always go smoothly lol

I didn't like using a bit of force with glass panel either - but none was on the actual glass itself.

                • +1

@Mingles: Bought 3. The first one was tricky but the other two was a quick set up. Much easier with two people. Thanks for the heads up on this deal op. It looks great.

  • So from past experience with the IKEA Detolf and my current Stacked branded cabinets, they are essentially the same product and the glass shelving are held up by the metal rods that are welded in a fixed place (i.e. fixed height). Therefore, they are not height adjustable.

Hard to tell by the pictures on the Aldi site, but I can see the glass shelving are held up with what looks to be like corner trianglar tabs of some sort?

Anyone with the Aldi cabinet please confirm how the glass shelves are held up? The product details says "Adjustable shelves", are they height adjustable?

    • +1

They have screws you insert into the poles and there's 2 different heights you can insert them into at each level. The glass is thicker than detolf and has a higher weight limit

      • Ok thanks for the insight. This may fit my need for taller Lego that I have, which can't be displayed in the Stacked cabinets.

Do you know what the max height limit is for the highest adjustable level?

Stacked is about 38cm between each glass shelf.

        • +1

If you want to keep all 4 level (or 3 glass shelf panel + 1 bottom), the maximum height you get is 42-43cm, so about 5cm higher than the regular 38cm. More than that you need to take 1 of the glass shelf panel out, then it will go up to ~80cm.
Another route that I suggest doing only when you know tinkering stuff is to drill in the metal pole at the custom height mark you want for the shelf, use plastic rawl plug to fit the screw in and repeat on all 4 poles, there you go a new custom shelf level.

  • I hear they're currently on clearance for $50 at the Chadstone Aldi store here in Vic - so possible on clearance at other stores as well.

    • PC needs emoji for this reply…. 0 chance it's still stocked but diverting mypartner on her way home as I type! thanks for the info either way

      • Good luck!!!

        • Yeh, nah. Needed more than luck for that one, and on the day I was born there was nought a four-leaf clover to be found (in fact I'm sure lots get trampled on by small men riding large animals pretending they're in control)
