Olympus E-M10 Mark II (14-42mm) Mirrorless Camera $599.08 @ No Frills Cameras eBay

PAMPER20

If you are looking for a camera that is more convenient than a DSLR but still great quality than apparently mirrorless cameras can be a great compromise (or not even a compromise? See comment below). A couple of friends of mine have this camera and they love it - it also has more flexibility with the lens that it can use.

$600 seems like an amazing price. It's the #1 pick for mid-range mirrorless at The Wirecutter.

  • I can definitely recommend this camera :)

  • Good find OP

  • this or gx850?

    • This is probably a better camera than the GX850 for stills and has IBIS. The advantage of the GX850 is size/weight, 4k video and cost - curently $440.

    • Alternative to gx850 is epl9. Auto selfie machines. 4K.

E-M10 has manual twin dials. Fine photography.

  • I have this camera! Paid $640 around Nov last year, so this is a great price for an awesome camera.

I wouldn't say that if you are choosing a mirrorless camera you are necessarily making a compromise compared to a DSLR. Your are generally choosing mirrorless because the features provided suit you better. A DSLR uses mirrors to allow you to see through the lens, a mirrorless camera does that digitally. If everything else is equal (sensor size, lens quality, camera body material ie metal/plastic, etc), then the effective difference will be the mirrorless camera will normally be smaller & lighter but the DSLR battery will usually last longer. Image quality (again if everything else is equal) should be the same. Yes, there can be other differences - some DSLRs may be able to focus faster than many mirrorless cameras, but with a mirrorless camera you are seeing what the sensor is seeing so you can get focus spot on with a manual lens, etc etc etc. I'm making some very general statements, I'll admit, but IMHO mirrorless is the future with DSLRs (as much as I love them) being a hybrid step from the original film SLRs.

Generally speaking, the majority of DSLRs have APS-C sensors, whilst this Olympus camera is a 'four thirds' model meaning the sensor is 'slightly' smaller so image quality may be impacted in comparison. In reality, the difference is fairly minimal for almost anyone. Those who can see the difference due to the types of photos they take, should probably move to full frame cameras anyhow.

  • Hmmmm I am tempted. This or the Nikon D3400 for a beginner? I know they're not in the same category but I was looking for a light-ish camera that takes better pictures than a point and shoot camera (I used to have the Sony NEX 3).

How likely are you to buy new lenses? M43 lenses are much smaller/lighter and more affordable.

      • Probably not very likely if I'm honest!

        • I have a Nikon D3300 and a Omd mark 1. It depends on what you are waiting it for. If it is an every day camera to have with you, or for snapshots. I would say the omd. The smaller form just makes it much more convenient! Plus as Fiximol mention, lenses are cheaper and smaller.

        • @missbeardy: Thank you for your reply. It's mostly when I go on trips. I guess most of my pictures are of landscape/nature and buildings and people. Do you think the image quality is much better with the nikon than the olympus (without editing)? And which one would be easier to use for a beginner?

All the small things that would make a difference on the spot:

      https://robinwong.blogspot.com/2016/04/5-reasons-why-olympus… … Especially point 5

      https://youtu.be/mrF6oskFkbk … Live composite*

Bang for buck primes, like the 45mm f1.8.

      Wifi vs Bluetooth sharing.

*Personally, just by LiveComp alone I'd get the Oly.

Cheaper than grey stock, very tempted to get this. 600d currently getting a bit long in the tooth. Have been eyeing the sony a6000 for al ong time because of aps-c sensor and low light performance, but this in body stabilisation in the OMD has me torn :/

  • Anyone have hands on comparison between this and the Mark III? The Mark II being from 2014 is stopping me making the purchase.
