    • Am I missing something about this computer alliance fad?

      • +7

        No I don't think so

      • +16

It's funny because Computer Alliance not participating in these "deals" is more or less why people like them - they don't price jack. They don't want to be a part of these deals because they're required to eat a portion of the discount which means raising prices given the low margins on tech.

        • just like kogan, now kogan doesnt participate in these deals either

        • -8

They don't want to be a part of these deals because they're required to eat a portion of the discount which means raising prices given the low margins on tech.

The retailers taking part in these 20% off deals have to eat the whole 20% plus on top of this they have to pay fees on the full sale price before the discount was applied.

        • +6

          @Maverick-au:

          This sounds like BS

        • +1

          @Maverick-au:
Can anyone upvote/downvote/comment to confirm this is true? I was hoping Ebay and the seller might split the discount cost and pay half each?

        • @takutox:

          This sounds like BS

It's been confirmed by multiple participants in these sales that this is how it works.

        • @Retrojunkie:

Can anyone upvote/downvote/comment to confirm this is true? I was hoping Ebay and the seller might split the discount cost and pay half each.

Search ozbargain, multiple participants and potential participants have confirmed this is correct. Why do you think computer alliance don't participate? They said they can't absorb a 20% reduction and full fees.

        • +1

          @Maverick-au:

Direct quote from user Computer Alliance here

the stores contribute most of the discount

          (emphasis added)

I thought others had mentioned it was split between eBay and retailer as well.

        • @djkelly69:

I thought others had mentioned it was split between eBay and retailer as well.

The others that had posted had said that they paid the full 20% and ebay fees on the pre discount price.

        • @Maverick-au:

Not saying that those participants are incorrect, I'm just unsure of their sources. I use to have a contact who worked at eBay and he told me that eBay usually cops 50% of whatever promotion is running so if it's a 20% promotion, eBay pays 10% out of pocket.

        • @Peunda:

The source was the emails from eBay offering them the opportunity to participate.

Multiple stores have posted the same information.

        • @djkelly69: Blimey, that puts a new spin on the price jacking. If they do it because they have to, the whole thing's broken.

    • Careful young padawan, I got put into the penalty box for saying that once upon a time :)

      • Whoops thanks for the advice mate!

      Here price jacking

    • +7

Here's one for you. eGlobal for a OnePlus 5T:

      Ebay = $841
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-OnePlus-5T-A5010-Dual-Sim-4G…

      eGlobal's own website = $647
      https://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/oneplus-5t-a5010-du…

Even without the 20% discount, it's more expensive through TrashBay.

    • +3

Will Apple be courageous and remove this jack?

Anyways, I might just wait a few more weeks for the impending EOFY 10% off storewide sale.

    • Brandbeast price jacked the item i was going to purchase from $245 to $273 today, it's still fairly cheap but they can go pound sand I'm not buying it on principal now.

      • This is all fairly dodgy and quite annoying that it happens regularly
I purchased from Petbarn ebay store last night for 25% off and today the same item only 20% off in an advertised "sale"
I guess the beauty of this post was last night I could see that being 25% off yesterday was bound to be better than todays 20% coupon
thanks for posting this deal early!!

  • +8

eBay is desperate. Is there any week these so-called "selected stores" sales aren't on?

    • +3

This is their opportunity to beat Amazon in Australia. It’s working.
I think the price jacking needs to be dealt with though.

      • +1

        Amazon will rise!

      • +12

Agree. Price jacking must fall into the ACCC ‘false or misleading representations’ like this

        • +10

It's definitely a breach of consumer law, but the ACCC can't do anything until someone buys something under misleading circumstances, then files a formal complaint.

The problem is that if you are smart enough to realize the price has been jacked and is not really on sale, then you're smart enough not to buy it. So you have no grounds to file a formal complaint because you have not incurred a personal loss as a result of the misleading conduct.

We just need a few Good Samaritans to buy some things with jacked prices and file some complaints.

        • +1

@marlor: Products are often cheaper than the rrp, but just not getting the stated saving cause of price jacking. Time to pick something and file a complaint.

        • @cheaponos:

Make sure you save screenshots before and after the price jacking occurs, so they can't try to deny the deceptive conduct. Gather as much evidence as possible to avoid them trying to scam their way out of it.

        • @marlor: it is hidden behind the grey area where promo is ran by eBay but price jacked is done by individual stores.

        • @wtfnodeal: Also comes under a grey area where the 'deal' is obtained via use of a coupon code that isn't administered by the seller.

People need to remember that these deals aren't really store 'sales' (as the store's actual 'street' price isn't discounted at all). They're incentives run by eBay to drive savvy consumers to eBay.

Regardless of people who just comment "price jack"; these coupons always results in the product I want being at the best possible price on the internet at the time of sale. If that's not a 'valid deal'; I don't know what will ever be…

        • @BradH13: Sometimes there's good deals for sure and not every store is jacking their price's either. What some people don't realise is that it's something of a symbiotic relationship, without the jacks their probably wouldn't be the sales, 20% or otherwise.

        • @marlor: Not sure if allphones got in early to jack up the price of the Moto G6 plus mobile (Aus stock). Allphones had it yesterday for $552.99 which is more than the RRP of $499. 20% off brings the phone down to $442.39.

        • @marlor:

It's definitely a breach of consumer law, but the ACCC can't do anything until someone buys something under misleading circumstances, then files a formal complaint.

You don't need to buy anything to file a complaint with the ACCC and it doesn't have anything to do with them taking action or not.

The ACCC are useless and they rarely do anything aside from collect reports, generate press releases and occasionally they prosecute someone like the egg distributor who made tens of millions of dollars selling caged eggs as free-range and was fined a six figure sum. Great work, they make $20 million from illegal activity and you fine them half a million.

        • @Maverick-au:

Dell price jacked during one of their sales quite a few years back, and the ACCC sorted it out for me. It was a pretty painless process once I presented them with the evidence.

        • if someone is able to list a bunch of items where price was increased after 'sale' started in this deal and/or previous deal eBay 20% off deals I'd be happy submit a complaint online.

We got the numbers so can make an impact if we want.

      • Except people are getting more and more is to the sales. Just said to my sister today, wait for 20% sale. Now there's one.

Tightarse brings all the boys to the yard,

And they're like, it's tighter than yours,

Damn right, it's tighter than yours,

He could show you, but he'd have to charge!

Tightarse brings all the boys to the yard,

Goodbye credit card limit. Very happy to see dcxpert again. Their sigma lenses have been the cheapest in the world.

    • Any thoughts on Sigma 100-400mm or Sigma 50-500mm lenses for Canon?
Would you recommend a different zoom lens?

      • +1

Just a generalization that you're probably already aware of; the smaller the zoom range the better. So the 4 x zoom (100 - 400) should be better the the 10x zoom (50 - 500). Generally, with scopes and lenses, I look for 3x zoom or fixed (0 zoom). Actually it's also generally true with multi viscosity motor oils too. If you have full frame there's a dude below who is after the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM EF although the older, cheaper, smaller and lighter canon 70-200 f4 L IS is still on a par image quality wise.

        • I'm mostly interested about the "f2.8". Light wise, f4 is just half as good. Just to complicate things a bit more, there is also the "MK I" version on the 70-200 f2.8 but IMHO nothing beats the MK II :)

        • +1

@GregFiona: 70-200mm 2.8 IS is getting a MK III most likely this week! http://www.canonrumors.com/two-new-lenses-coming-from-canon-…

        • +1

@GregFiona: the 2.8 is the one used by dudes who get paid - it has the reputation of being a solid workhorse. The MKII is definately a better lens - time moves on :)

        • Thanks. I grabbed the 100-400mm yesterday and it arrived today.

My favourite part of these deals is they put the full price on the tax invoice, so I can claim the GST on that amount, not the discounted priced :-).

        • @mathew42: Just looked at it - it looks like it should be good for what it is. Made in Japan and stabilised. The usb dock seems like a good idea for updates and customisations. My favorite lens is probably my longest one (equiv 90 - 300mm f2.8). I hope you enjoy it.

    • traveling to Europe soon so after a versatile lens,
was looking to pick up the canon 24-105L
anything similar you could recommend in the Sigma range?

      • Do you have APS-C or full frame?

  • +2

Kitchenaid mixer! I am coming! Oh yeah! Thanks Op : )

    • +1

Kogan is having $500 off Kitchenaid mixers

      • That's awesome! $500 off bundled with 7.5% off Kogan eGift cards makes them a steal!!

      • Is Kitchenaid on Kogan under Australian Warranty?

        • It has a big image saying they are an Official partner and it comes from AU stock. I guess they put that up because they were sick of answering this same question :)

    • Do you have a link to this please?

    • I'm looking for a good deal on a Kitchenaid mixer too - please share any links if you find them.

      • Looks like appliances online will have the KSM160 for $479.20 after 20% off if they dont jack the price.

Can anyone confirm they deliver to Perth?

        • My bad mis read appliance central for appliance online. Looks like peter kensington will be cheapest at $520 after discount

        • @ArabMoneeey: Yeah looks like ~$520 is the best deal to be had here for the KSM160 from Peters of Kensington. Was hoping for something in the $400s.

    • +1

Be careful what about what you wish for… I bought one just before Christmas and I’m actually disappointed in it. Granted, it has a very strong motor and I do use it for pizza dough but I’ve actually returned to using my old Sunbeam for cakes. It creams the butter and sugar so much better than the Kitchenaid can. I found that no matter how much I mixed, I always had grainy cake mix from the butter and sugar not creaming properly. Same for meringue.

  • How many jacks do we get to go with it?

    • -1

As many as you can KEEP UP with…

  • Wanted to grab this offer for Macbook, any suggestions Ozbargainers?

  • Quite happy with this selection. Some less frequent ones popping up is nice.

  • +6

    search link please :)

      • +1

        Lame as usual.

        • +3

          You sound furious, George.

  • +1

Any chance of a site wide sale? or is this it for EOFY?

    • +18

      Yes.

      • +2

        Dammit. Got me there.

      • Are you sure?

They had a 20% sitewide last year on 30th of June. Worked on US ebay and got myself a MSI GS43 7RE for $1480 delivered + import tax…

Edit or was that a yes there is a chance?

  • Is Office 365 in any of those stores?
