Good solid router especially with merlin firmware on it! MSY had it for $189 recently!

only bad thing of Merlin is it still doesn't support AiMesh up to current stable version (385.4)

Not officially. But you can enter the following command in the shell to enable it.

        nvram set amas_force=1
        nvram commit

I thought I paid too much for it last week until I read to the last paragraph then I realised I actually bought the router & modem one - the DSL-AC68U with the same bonus headphone for $228 delivered.

FWIW, these earphones are SHIT. They're very stiff and uncomfortable, and fall out if you move your head AT ALL.

  • Consider waiting on this purchase, the VPNFilter malware has been found to have infected way more models of router than initially thought, including a bunch of asus models, and with the AC66U confirmed as vulnerable i'm sure the AC68U isn't that far removed firmware wise.

I don't consider this a deal. This model is 5 years old already, pretty outdated.

Would you buy a phone today that's 5 years old in technology? I wouldn't.

This model won't be supported by the manufacturer for a long. I expect to reach the end of life this year or next year at most.

The RT-AC68U architecture may be relatively old, but it's still being supported with regular firmware updates including security updates and new feature updates such as AiMesh ("an innovative new router feature that connects multiple ASUS routers to create a whole-home WiFi network").

      Some examples:

RT-AC86U is the successor to RT-AC68U, however in Australia it is available exclusively from Harvey Norman (& Domayne) and is expensive at $449.00 (currently on sale for $390.63)…

And it's a good solid tested model. Some of the newer models have features few people will use - and yes their wireless might be a bit faster, but if your internet tops out at less than 100mbps, this model will easily handle that on its slowest bandwidth. Routers are not moving at Moore's Law pace.

I've had one for over a year now and it is reliable. It has been recently patched for vulnerabilities.

Bottom line is yes you can pay $300-plus for a newer model and get a barely noticeable performance boost.. and if that is important to you - go for it. I'm going for a second RT-AC68U to put at the other end of the house to get solid wifi wherever I go in the house….. two for about the same price as one newer model.

I have this model (in t-Mobile form). It is great and well worth the price.
Easy to use and I have enabled a global adblock feature that cleans up web browsing heaps.

Can you name a better supported and featured router for $170? I can't. It is my recommendation for a good fully featured consumer router.
