  • is this particularly loud for a mechanical keyboard?

    • -1

Red switches should be fairly silent

      • As silent as any other non clicky switch, but depending on the casing(steel, aluminium, plastic) sound will differ.

However you can get O-rings to dampen sound or silent switches, O-rings stop the Keycap from hitting the top of the switch case.

    • IIRC cherry reds are very smooth and quite silent. When you think of noisy mechanical keyboards it's the blue ones which have a very tactile bump and feedback to them.

I have this keyboard with brown switches (kinda a mix between the two) and think it's great even for 100+ bucks.

    • Define "loud", a mechanical keyboard will always be louder than a membrane keyboard because you're bottoming out plastic keys into plastic rather than into a soft rubber pad. Whether the keyboard is loud or not will be primarily how hard you type and whether you have a habit of bottoming out keys.

That said, the others are right that red switches should be quieter than other switches. I personally use blue and I find that they are quite loud. They're fine when I'm on my own, but I probably wouldn't use it in an office setting, say.

    • There are Silent Red switches.

Which have a bit of rubber on the tops and bottoms, so on the down stroke when the the stem hits the bottom casing it dampens the sound, same with the upstroke.

If you want to test switches before you buy a keyboard, a switch tester is a must as it is a expensive investment.

I've made all my keyboards hot swappable, so i can switch out any mechanical switch i want.

A good keyboard is a good investment as we are on our PC's for many hours of the day.

      • Which keyboards have the absolute longest lifespans both the unit and key degradation themselves.
