Honestly legitimate question: You not using an Anti-malware tool now (or out of the box MS one) .. you use this for 6 months for free.. and then what? uninstall it and go back to the MS one? Or pay them full retail price to continue on the subscription?
Kind of defeats the purpose somewhat…

No, you find another free 6 months deal. Bitdefender seem to have regular giveaways

Use Common Sense 2018 Standard Edition.
Been using it for 4 years and ran a thorough scan with Malwarebytes last week… not a single infection.

That's how they get you. Have you getting used to its protection and sense of security, then pay up after 6 months.

That's exactly what I mean.. It isn't exactly a deal then if it is just bait and hook..

Nobody is forcing you to buy it lol

    Thanks mate…!

  • I'm unhappy with Bitdefender solution. It can slow my browser, even crash it. It prevent me from uninstalling programs without give the program I remove permissions to remove it self. Also cause unnecessary writes on my SSD, it isn't that fast start up program for antivirus, I guess the viruses can load faster that Bitdefender.

Same here, never had any luck with bitdefender despite several attempts. Its too instructive, keep crashing my pc. A pain to uninstall as well.

    • I didn't want to say anything as Bitdefender always rates very highly in magazine reviews etc., but a while back I had a 6 month deal and my wife's (perfectly working Asus laptop of at least 3 years) needed a solution so we decided to put it on there.

Within a day we had the (admittedly occasional) blue screen, and it wouldn't stop happening (we tried for a week) until we'd uninstalled Bitdefender. It now runs Norton and no blue screens.

I'm sure hundreds of thousands of people don't have the issue and this is an isolated incident but it does make we weary unfortunately.

If your wifes laptop is running Windows 10 you don't need BitDefender or Norton as it actually comes with a built in protection system called Windows Defender which has been receiving consistently high ratings for quite some time now. When your Norton is up for renewal I would recommend just uninstall it and use the Microsoft provided protection.

        • Well aware mate as I own an IT servicing firm but thanks for taking the time anyway.

I won't say "quite some time" just yet as it really only has started to shine in the last 3-6 months or so and it was absolutely atrocious before that.

But apart from the fact in experimentation I've found Norton to be a little less resource hungry (yes I know right?) I will concede Defender should be fine for the majority now. Only if you needed the added guff of full suites (credit card protection, spam protection etc), you do not need a separate AV suite any more.

Sigh - another source of income bites the dust :)

  • I signed up for the free 6 months and got an email saying "Enjoy your 6 months" etc etc. I followed the instructions in the email to install the program but after all that it's saying I only have a free 30 day trial? I don't see any actual code you input anywhere.

  • what if my fetish is getting viruses and malware in my pc?

Thanks OP, however for those on macOS, please be aware of issues raised by Macworld in Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac (v6.1) review: Poor performance during real-world use where it was rated 1 star.

I understand the freebie is the Total Security edition, but the core AV is probably identical.

  • If anyone really wants to use BitDefender here is the free version:

    http://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html

It's just a basic realtime anti virus scanner which is really all you need. These paid programs just add a bunch of feature bloat that will cause issues on quite a few systems.

I used to use Avast antivirus free but have since switched to just using Windows 10 defender which is consistently rating near the top of each AV comparison and is very unobtrusive.

I own a bitdefender license that hasn't even expired yet and iv'e removed it from all my systems. I found it getting in the way more than helping. The 'file protection' utilities would cause programs to malfunction and it generally made my systems run slower. Don't recommend.

  • Might give it a go on Android/IOS
