    Harvey No Deal…

      That's a different product

  • +7

I’m using my right to vote as a I have a major issue with this retailer.

    • +2

Yeah, Mr Harvey is a crybaby who doesn't like competition, and successfully got Gerry's Stupid Tax (GST) applied to all overseas purchases. We don't like him either.

  • +7

No disrespect to OP. Just (profanity) HN, won’t spend a single cent there unless it’s at their loss.

    • +17

I am with you on this one.

Worked most of my life in retail, and the last few years at HN.

The culture is the worst I have ever seen: From the morning meeting where the franchisee and managers constantly teach you ways to "stich-up customers" to over-charging customers during a sale by manually removing the discount when the customer is not aware of the sale, or shamelessly bumping the ticket price on items above RRP and selling it at those inflated prices to naive customers.

I promised myself to take the money out of HN (by taking home my pay) but never pay them a single cent by shopping elsewhere.

      • +1

when ever I see the ticketed price or no price on an items, I just walk away every time..

      • By working there you provide more value to them than they pay you, or you wouldn't have been worth hiring. there are sadly few ways to hurt corporations like this and working for them is not one of them

        • +1

          You are right.

At the end of the day there is so much you can do:

          • I can quit tomorrow and be replaced by one of the hundreds of young guys waiting for my spot out there.
          • I can just do whatever I am told to do, an take advantage of naive customers.
          • I can try to raise customer awareness.

If everyone is aware of the culture, they have two choices: Change for the better or die. The issue is that a lot of people do not talk about it because, in the end, the smell of money makes them go back to their immoral behaviour.

I want people to know how they are treated and maybe try something: Walk to the product that is very marketed/advertised in-store and check if the price on the ticket matches the price on the website. If it does, see what the salesman tries to sell you, and then compare the price he quoted you for that item with the price advertised on the website.

Sadly many naive customers still walking into Harvey Norman shops.

      • How much of a staff discount do you get when buying from HN?

My personal experience shopping there is that they are understaffed on weekends. They get way too many customers and each one asks a lot of questions, spending upwards of 20 minutes with the sales rep, and if I need to ask them something, or just simply purchase something from the cabinet, I have to wait.

This is disgraceful service. Only sales guys have the keys to the glass cabinet but if they're busy I can't buy anything, even if I already know what I want and will be quick, I have to wait for them to serve these clueless customers who ask a million questions only to not buy anything. They should give a key to a checkout chick so that if you know what you want, you can just ask her to fetch it.

One time, I was going to make a purchase from the cabinet, and none of the staff had the key or could find it. Unbelievable.

I had 3 HN AMEX credits expiring 30/6 and I didn't end up using any. There just weren't any deals for me, but I didn't even walk into the store during that time. It's usually cheaper elsewhere.

        • +1

very good observation and Gerry thought overseas import was hurting him when he could have invested in good customer service

        • +1

Staff discount is, in theory, cost price.

Now I say in theory because franchisees can charge you a little bit extra to make a slight profit.

Also "cost price" does not include any of the back end rebates etc.

Like I said in my first post, I do not give then any of my coins and deal directly with the suppliers. They give much bigger discounts.

As for the key issue, it is caused by a single HN store being made of multiple franchises (read "sections"), with each a franchisee. The checkout people are employed by one franchise and would not want to be responsible for other franchises' goods (lots of dramas when something goes missing and we have to point the finger at someone).

        • @Pielo: So basically, everyone wants to avoid responsibility, even if it means slower service?

Things really shouldn't go missing if they are handled correctly. Every cabinet should be under surveilance.

This gels with my recent experience with HN. I purchased a laptop from them (because Officeworks were out of stock). When I mentioned to the sales guy that the laptop would be used for email, he told me I needed to purchase MS Office as well otherwise I wouldn't be able to receive email! I couldn't believe how blatantly he lied to me. I told him that Windows and MacOS have included free email software - since forever. I bet a lot of people get sucked in by this lie. I needed the laptop urgently, otherwise I would have walked.

  • Not gonna neg (this is a good deal) but wondering - will OW price-match this? (Does OW stock this?)

  • you're better off with an ssd in a case since you have the flexibility and security AND speed of an ssd either in a computer or an external drive

with this device you're locked into always being an ext. drive and a slow one at that

  • +1

Negging due to major issues with retailer. Gerry, are you running a retail chain or running a government lobby group? I refuse to spend my money somewhere that will use it to lobby government to disadvantage consumers and try to monopolise their market.

    • +1

If you're going to neg because you don't like the retailer or have issues with them, could you at least give the cliffs notes version of what your problem is so that the rest of us who didn't have a problem with them can be informed about it?

      • +1

This is the cliff notes version. I don’t know how I can make it more condensed.

I refuse to give money to a corporation that will then use my money to lobby government so that they can kill competition and monopolise the market instead of competing in that market place.

This is akin to what organised crime groups do when they are trying to control an area. Gerry Harvey is using the money he has received from consumers to buy off government officials to enact laws that reduce competition in his area so he can try and monopolise on it.

If you don’t have a problem with what Gerry is doing with your money and using it to bribe government with generous donations and lobbying with the aim to restrict competition in the market place, then so be it… I do, however, have a major issue with this.

        • +1

Ah right. That's your beef with him. I dislike him for the same reasons.

I just assumed you had a bad shopping experience with them and wanted to hear more.

I agree you should be free to boycott a business for political reasons. It just helps to explain your negs more specifically. In case there's somebody else who is not informed about what the issue is and is puzzled by the negs.

      • -3

It’s pathetic negging deals that have nothing to do with the product or price, meaning can go on any post & neg it cause you don’t like the retailer get over yourself your whinging should be in the forums has nothing to do with the item, won’t be wasting my time posting deals when pathetic reasons like this are allowed to neg deals

        • +3

There is a thing that some are not aware of. It is called integrity. Personally that trumps every other possible concept we humans can come up with.

  • -2

HN need to lift their game to win back customers

    • +1

They'll need to lift more than that.

  • -2

I don't understand why people are negging the deal… If it's a good deal for the product itself, go grind your political axes elsewhere.

    • -1

It's not a political neg. It's people voting with their… votes.

      • -2

If you neg because of Gerry's political views rather than the fact that it is a good deal on the product itself, you are grinding a political axe.

        • +3

Anti-consumer behaviour isn't what I'd call "political views".

Plus, did you miss that I already said I didn't neg this deal? Jeez, go waste your impotent outrage elsewhere.

    • +2

But it's not a good deal. If you're considering this amount of storage via USB (as I recently have been doing), you should be getting an SSD such as an M.2 (non-NVMe) SSD with USB 3.x enclosure.

You'll get much better performance, capacities, and longevity, along with improved security etc etc.

If you look at USB prices - they've been stagnant for years with no speed improvements. Why? Perhaps it's because of the SSD market.

Don't buy 64 GB USB sticks unless you have a very specific use case that an SSD can't do. Too much to risk.
