nokia 7 plus is a much better buy. It will actually get android updates and it has better build quality. It was on sale for like 380 recently

    • +5

      Was it an AU Stock?

G6 Plus comes with project treble support (Android 8.0), hence it will l receive the google updates too.

      • +8

it was not AU stock and it's silly to compare your deal with overseas stock

      • +4

don’t think the moto 6 is android one though …the nokia 7 plus is but still $600 for local stock….the moto x might be .

      • +9

not official updates. project treble makes updates easier but doesnt force manufacturers to release them. "android one" forces them (nokia phones are android one and most have 8.1, whereas moto g5 plus is stuck on 7.1 lol).
"Don’t expect lengthy software support from Motorola’s new Moto G6 and E5" https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/04/20/dont-expect-lengthy…

        • +3

yeah, treble is just an abstraction layer in the architecture, if it’s android one, google can release updates for most of the OS, if the phone isn’t android one, they you are still dependent on the phone manufacturer for OS updates.

Android one is what you want so you aren’t dependent on the phone manjfacturer for security patches and some parts of the OS updates.

        • +1

You are right. Treble just makes it easier for manufacturers to manage updates. It's entirely up to device manufacturers to release them to end users.

        • +1

"nathan-drake" My Moto G5 Plus is stuck on Android 7.0 and security patch level 1 April.

    • +2

You need to put a case on that Nokia if you are to go out adventuring in Uncharted territory!

  • +7

Wife as the G5 Plus and very impressed, very fast amazing battery life, amazing camera pictures and do things like turn the camera on by 2 twists of the phone or turn the torch on/off with 2 chops etc. Was under $300 with a recent deal - amazing value.
G6 Plus should be much better than G5 Plus

    • +1

Yea, G6 Plus has got Dual Lens setup for the rear camera like Moto X4. That's what I am after, with a budget phone price, for my wife to click photos of my baby. And Treble support compared to X4

    • has that phone even got android 8.0 yet

      • +6

LOLOLOL You want to make sure everyone with a Moto upgrades to a Nokia.

I love them both, there are a few Moto's in my house hold and they have been great. I'm really glad Nokia is in the game now, both these companies are going to push each other and finally stock Android devices are becoming a norm!

Looking forward to picking up a Nokia someday.

        • +3

yeah, motor have just announced another android one phone …..so looks like nokia and moto will need to compete on hardware costs and features as the software will be the same , android one …..

xiaomi …..still waiting for them to have an android one phone with band 28 and nfc, nokia and moto already do.

        • +1

          @garage sale:

Yeah definitely, the more OEM's they jump onto the Android One bandwagon, the better for us. The mid range battle is definitely heating up as of late.

Oh man if Xiaomi showed up to the party with their Android One phones and local retailers sold them for a decent amount, the market would forget about all the horrid skinned phones.

      • Nah it doesn't. I'm still running 7.0 LOL

Was hoping to get an update for it because the camera on the G5 plus was bugging me ("Camera Error")

  • +1

Damn if only there was pickup in Syd as I'm flying out on the weekend - could claim GST back :/

    • Yeah. I'm flying out Monday, delivery is Tues. Damn.

      • Where are you going?

        • Hong Kong.
Could buy phone over there, but think I prefer Aus stock.

        • @zedg:

Nice man, yeah dude check out the local market, I'm sure Xiaomi must have some crazy priced midranger, or even a highend for ~400 Aus!

    • Where are you going?

  • +1

Guys I am an iPhone user, looking to change my phone. I have no clue in regards to mobile technology. Is this a good buy for normal day to day use. Appreciate all the advice. Budget is under $450.

    • get the nokia 7plus. the larger battery size makes up for the slightly higher price tag.

      • nokia 7 plus for local stock is $600+

        • -3

433 $ on eglobal central and i think they have a 24 month warranty policy although it isnt local stock, but defs not a bad price for a solid phone

        • @2asian4this: isn't eglobal dead for Oz deliveries?

    • +7

hard to beat the moto g6 plus or moto x if budget is under $450, it has band 28 and nfc, and is local stock with au charger and warranty which a lot of chinese phones don’t if you need to import yourself at this price point.

    • +2

If you want a good update experience, get a Nokia. Even a 6.1 is comparable to this. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/phones/Outright-Mobile-Handsets/no…

      • +2

Just wanted to mention that while I'm enjoying the stock feel/quick updates experience of the Nokia 6.1, in the period between the last two updates, I had to have 4G turned off to avoid spontaneous shut downs. A widespread issue, apparently some interaction between 4G and GPS caused it to go into panic mode or something. All good now with latest patch.

Hopefully the time pressure to get system updates out for all Android One devices won't cause these issues too often in the future. The Treble modularisation of the OS sounds like a good idea - I would probably prefer that if the updates didn't lag too long behind the official ones, say two or three months. Sounds like it is longer than that?

        • +1

"madak" Had some update issues also having my update download paused and not resuming with both 4G/3G data and/or wifi giving some wifi notification. Seems common on google too.

Can I ask what is the latest security update your on as my last update is uncertain??

Mine is on 8.1.0 and security patch level 1 May here in Australia with an Optus sim.

        • +1

@ozhunter68: I'm on 8.1.0 with a 1 June security patch, build number 00WW_2_22E, Boost (Telstra). Here is the thread I was following: https://community.phones.nokia.com/support/discussions/topic…
By the looks of it, it is people on Optus that still seem to be having issues. :-(

        • +1

          @madak:

Thanks for reply. Have the TA-1068 model here with 00WW_2_22A build and tonight tried updating with Kogan sim also with no luck. Read through your link a bit and others are on same 1 May update too.

At least I have only had one of those shutdown reboot issues, but still not using it as main phone yet.

    • I'd try and find a iPhone SE for the money.

    • +4

This is a decent Android phone in your budget. I believe most people would find it very good, comparable to phones twice it's price.

Others on here are saying that there are others 'better', whether that's true or not is probably subjective and by small degrees.

However iPhone users may experience bumps moving to Android, so you're best to make the decision carefully yourself.

  • +7

Nokia 6 2018 is specced the same but 1GB less ram and a 16:9 screen rather than 18:9. However it has a rear fingerprint scanner and nokia updates faster and longer than Motorola. The nokia 6 2018 is already on 8.1. It costs 399 without any deals or coupons at JB Hifi.
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/phones/Outright-Mobile-Handsets/no…

    • +3

The Nokia 6 2018 is quite nice, has been as low as $339 from JB. No dual SIM but excellent value.

    • +7

You forgot about some other very important things which are different:
      Moto G6 Plus: 5.93" 64Gb Dual SIM
      Nokia 6: 5.5” 32Gb single SIM

    • Nokia 6.1 (aka 2018) has a combo sim2/micro sd tray

For some reason, wife's Moto G6+ feels faster than 6.1 even though they have the same cpu. I'm on Oreo 8.1 while she is on 8.0

      source: own a nokia 6.1 ta-1068

  • +3

This is a new release , price will come down significantly over the coming months.

    • +3

Very true. I bought this ~1 month ago when I had issues with my previous phone for ~$450-460. Fortunately, the parcel got lost and I got a refund hahaha

  • +7

The G5S Plus for ~$265 from TGG recently with P20Good was better value. The improvements of the SD630 over the SD625 are pretty minor. Slightly better camera, slightly better bluetooth, slightly better USB, slightly better quickcharge, slightly better screen res, slightly better RAM, slightly better ROM.

But this is a real solid option. If I hadn't gotten the G5S+ I'd probably get this.

    • +4

I was nearly going to get one but it looks so old sitting next to the newer phones with their thin bezels.

    • +1

Managed to get a G5S+ for $200 at office-works after they put the wrong ticket on an item (one time only, sorry ozbargain).

      • LOL I feel betrayed.

    • +1

I bought my wife the G5S Plus a few months ago. I bought the G6 Plus a few weeks ago for $450. The G6 Plus is better again then the G5S Plus. The camera is faster, which was a big complaint with the G5's. The G6 Plus is slightly bigger, but I can't really tell if the CPU is noticeably faster.

Overall I rate the G6 Plus better.

FWIW, I now refuse to buy from TGG ebay store after they stuffed up my order of a Hisense TV a few months ago. Their whole organisation is bloody useless especially with each store being franchised and separate to the ebay store. Essentially it's the whole left hand not talking to the right hand analogy. I complained to them but that went nowhere.

      • +1

The G6 Plus is unquestionably better in multiple aspects.

The question is whether it's ~150% the price of the G5S Plus better.

For most people I'd say it's not really a question, the G6 Plus is the better option. But for a stingy cheap bugger on OzBargain it's a conundrum.

  • +1

I bought a moto x4 over G6+ for the "waterproof" and smaller factor. Just depends on what you want but the 2 phones are internally the same except camera.

    • +2

If Australian X4 was Android One version, I would've definitely chosen X4 over GS+ as well. Unfortunately, Android One edition of X4 is not available in AU but in US.

  • +3

Decent deal, nice first post, cheers

    • Thanks mate :)

  • +1

Welcome aboard @OP - thanks for posting this offer. Looks like you helped a fair few members :)

  • Hmm to upgrade from an iphone 6s to this… Any other options in this price range with a large screen?

    • +2

This moto, or the x4, or the Nokia's mentioned above, seem to be popular in this price range. Specs sometimes don't always help differentiate - the experience can vary due to the software, each of these are light on software so run well. Main differentiators seems to be camera (if photos are important for you), or regular updates to Android, or memory/storage options).

      • Camera, performance and large screen which seem to all point at the G6Plus

  • Can someone please point me to where the bands are for this model? The eBay ad doesn't seem to list the bands, and even motorola's own Australian store doesn't list the bands: https://store.motorola.com.au/product/moto-g6-plus/

GSM arena specs are here and it does list the bands for the Brazil and the Europe models: https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_g6_plus-9001.php … but it depends which model this is. In Australia for 4G you want bands: 28, 3, 7, 1, 40, 5. If it's the Brazil model it's missing band 40 (used by Optus at 43% of sites), and if it's the Europe model it's missing both band 40 and band 28 (used by Telstra at 62% of sites, and Optus at 83% of sites).

So either this is a different model not listed on gsmarena, or it's missing 1 or 2 bands that it would ideally have (not fatal, just worth knowing), and/or I've just missed it listed somewhere and/or gsmarena is wrong.

    • +1

      From Motorola:

      Networks + bands
      4G LTE (Cat6), UMTS / HSPA+, GSM / EDGE
      2G: GSM band 2/3/5/8,
      3G: WCDMA band 1/2/5/8/19,
      4G: FDD LTE band 1/2/3/5/7/8/18/19/26/28
      TDD LTE band 38/40/41(2535-2655MHz)

      • Awesome, thank you Neil.

  • it's showing out of stock for click and collect.

    • Yea, same with me. I had to choose delivery for ~5 bucks.

  • Does the phone support VOLTE or WIFI calling?

  • +2

Am I missing something? This was posted a month ago here same price and aus stock at this price with 11 upvotes haha.

    • 11 upvotes now lol.

  • Is this deal done?
I enter the code on checkout and says not valid

  • I got this for the missus in the last 20% eBay sale. She had the sound randomly disappearing and had to get it replaced by TGGs. Seems to be a fairly common hardware fault.

  • +1

I was itching to buy one at work today, luckily I held off especially after seeing this video tonight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1dOnc4SuT0 (not a apple fan boi, but the Motorola could be improved heaps in the future possibly with custom roms, kernels & tweaks etc as development grows on XDA Developers Forum). If only the Nokia 7 plus local stock had a decent deal like the grey imports have. I know its not the Plus version of G6 but it got me thinking how much better without a custom kernel real world performance would be on a G6 Plus if it couldn't possibly handle the extra memory better on a stock kernel.

    • +1

You've already mentioned the ram but what about the different chipset?
      G6P SD630 vs G6 SD450
Don't think that video is fair representation of the G6P performance.

  • +3

53 units were bought after posting this deal compared to 13 until the post. :)
Obviously OZBargain is a sales boost for businesses.

  • Just received my delivery and it was the wrong unit. It was Moto G6 32GB!
What would be the right procedure to get this exchanged? Just not feeling to drive to a store since I have paid for delivery.

    • JB turned good guys to bad guys. Following the lead of Gerry
