Motorola Moto X4 (Black or Sterling Blue) 64GB/4GB $399 (Was $599) @ JB Hi-Fi

630

The Moto X4 is now $399. $300 off the $699 release price last year. Since then it's been available for $599 and $499. A well received phone but at $699 it was way too pricey for a mid range phone.

Available in Black Sold Out or Sterling Blue colours.

At $399 it's a good price for a mid range phone and good alternative to G6 Plus and Z2 Play. Note that unlike the Z2 Play you can't use moto mods.

Overall similar specs (same storage, RAM & snapdragon 630 processor) to the G6 Plus but the X4 screen is a bit smaller 5.2" vs 5.9". However the X4 camera looks better on paper (Dual 12mp/8mp f2.0 & f2.2 vs dual 12mp/5mp f/1.8 on the rear and 16mp front camera vs 8mp front camera). Note that X4 is upgradable to Android Oreo 8.1, G6 Plus has it out of the box.

  • I was looking at this except I decided to go with the Moto G6 Plus last week. I paid about $50 more. Sort of regretting it now.

    • +3

That's how the world of tech is. There would always be a cheaper and better option after having made a purchase. Best not to regret it.
A few years back, I bought a laptop with a Nvidia GTX 860M chip at the low price of US$900. 3 weeks later, there was a revised model with a 960M chip for US$10 less. I went on to use said notebook for 3 years before deciding it was getting long in the tooth.

    • May I know why ur regretting G6 plus? I'm tossing between G6 plus, Z2 and X4 myself. I want dual sim which can use sim1 for call and sim2 for 4G data or vice versa. Decent camera, don't have to be stellar. Thanks

      • It's only $50 more I spent so not a massive regret. As albert said, often something cheaper comes along straight after a purchase. I have benefited the other way, where I've jumped on a purchase and prices have gone up massively soon after.

Here's a comparison between the phones. Not a lot of difference.

        • +1

The G6 is 5.9 inches, and the X4 is 5.2 inches. For most people that's a pretty big difference.

        • +2

@drojf: For some people, an extra 0.7 of an inch is more important. For others it comes down to performance.

        • @heal: true, actually i prefer smaller phone than phablet. Btw does G6 plus has dual sims and micro sd tray separately? Thanks

        • +1

@andri77: Me too. Not sure that either has a dedicated slot. I believe the Z3 has. I'll let you know when the G6 arrives on Friday.

        • @heal: he didn't get it.

        • @heal: The G6 is dual sim (nano size) and has a spot on the tray for a micro sd. I haven't used the phone as I have to get a new sim card to fit the tray.

        • +1

@heal: decided to get X4. I guess i neee water resistant more than micro sd tray. And prefer smaller phone. Thanks for input. Oh, jb sales gave me $387 n used 28degrees for 5% off

  • I bought one as an upgrade to my G5 Plus. I love my G5, but I want a little bit more speed, a little bit better camera, a little bit more memory…. And voila! Here it is. The X4, aka G5 Plus Plus.

  • Does this phone have a dual sim capacity? Couldn't find any info in specs.

    • +2

Found it on Motorola AU Website

      Sim Card
      4G / 3G Dual Nano SIM

    • The x4 selling on mobileciti is dual sim 4g/3g not sure about this one
Also dwi (grey imports ) is selling $354 on ebay with 10% code…
Not sure what's the difference with the jb's local stock ;-P

  • This or Nokia 6 2018. Hmm..

    • +2

Very happy with my Nokia 6 2018 for $300 delivered from HK. 4GB/64GB model. Battery life is REALLY good. Always have 60-70 after a full day, no battery anxiety. Having said that Moto also looks good for local stock.

      • +1

Which deal was this? Thanks for your feedback. Same CPU hence the question :)

      • The Nokia 6 2018 is same price as this at JB, $399, and has the same size battery and same SOC, so worth having a look at both for anyone considering this.

        • +1

The one at JB is 3GB/32GB and quite possibly single sim. The HK one is 4GB/64GB dual sim:

          https://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/nokia-6-2018-4gb-64… about $300 delivered

        • @BlinkyBill: Not sure about JB hi-fi but the one from Harvey Norman is dual Sim hybrid, and you can use the $50 amex offer.
I'd argue the 1 gig extra ram won't be noticeable but the local warranty will be if thing go south …

        • @BlinkyBill:
The JB Hi-Fi website says 3GB RAM but the phone is actually 4GB RAM.
The local store had 0 black and 3 silver(stirling blue) yesterday but all gone now.
Haven't put a sim in it yet but it updated to Android 8.0 over WiFi with recent security updates.
The wife wants to get a case for it before using it.
This phone was on our wish list waiting for the right price.

        • -1

@GCSteve: there's a guy on eBay in Melbourne with wine good case+screen protector for the 2018 edition. It fully covered the display service is nice

  • +2

I'm so glad that 4GB/64GB configurations are starting to become standard now locally. Especially when they're not at flagship prices.

  • +1

Was seriously overpriced (AS 699) and now outdated (sd 630)

  • Could someone please confirm whether the MicroSD slot is shared with the SIM slot or not?

    • +1

      Yes it is

  • +1

In case someone is still interested in the moto mods, Z3 play is about to release as well (already released in some countries). Some other differences:

    Pros over X4:
    - Better chipset - SD636
    - Moto mods support
    - Better and bigger screen
    - Android 8.1

    Cons:
    - No 3.5mm jack
    - Camera (Z3: 12+5MP and 8MP front, X4: 12+8MP and 16MP front)
    - IP67 certified (dust and water proof)

  • Is there a cheap phone with good size oled screen + big battery? I've been using my note 3 since launch and the second battery is starting to show its age. Will only be used to watch youtube and netflix.

    • OLED screen and cheap don't usually go together.

  • Twice the price of the considerably better looking Sharp Aquos S2 …

    • Link to S2 at that price?

        • +2

The Aquos S2 is from China, so if anything goes wrong, I would assume that you have to send it back to China for repairs.
Also, you need to flash the Taiwanese rom - which usually voids any warranty that comes with the phone. The Moto X4 comes with stock Android - making it quite a bit better than the skin that Aquos puts on their devices.
Finally, absence of headphone jack and notch is a big issue for many people, and I reckon the ~$200 makes up for it.

Of course, if you really don't care about warranty, arguably worse skin, notch and no headphone jack, the Aquos S2 seems like the better deal.

  • I don't understand the benefit of a glass back as it's heavier and more slippery than metal or plastic. Plus it will probably be covered by a case so it doesn't break when dropped?

    • Heat dissipation? Wireless charging? I'm guessing. But yea i dun like glass as well. So fragile too

Toss between G6plus vs X4, fell on X4. Good deal $399.00. Ordered one. Thanks.
