All Sistema products are dishwasher (top rack), microwave (without lids), fridge and freezer safe.

    Fairly important info.

    • +8

The top rack dishwasher warning is largely irrelevant for anyone with a dishwasher made in the last 20 years.

Older dishwashers used to have an exposed element at the bottom for heating the water, more noteably, to dry (roast) the dishes at the end of the cycle. It's this drying cycle that melted plastics on the bottom shelf.

    • +4

Oh, we're not meant to microwave the lids?

      • According to them. I've been doing it wrong the whole time!

      • +1

        No. Just the food

      • +5

The lids must be left open while heating food anyways or you'll risk pressurising the container which may lead to the seals breaking or the container exploding.

Additionally, the lids are also made of somewhat lower quality plastic that may be not safe for storing food if heated (which Microwaving does). Also worthy of noting is that no plastic container should be used for "cooking" food, but only for reheating foods.

Additionally, if the foods are fatty in nature (meats, fish, or just about anything cooked with generous amounts of oils or butter) should ideally not be heated so that the fats reach high temperature, which could then react with the plastic and the plastic compounds could leech into food.

We're trying to rid our home of plastic as much as possible, or else I'd have jumped at this offer.

PS: It's not a big problem to store food in good quality plastics containers though. I'm just not comfortable with reheating anything in a plastic container.

        • The lids off is more about letting the steam escape. E.g. any food product designed to be microwaved says peel off the plastic film in one corner. We have some of these containers with plastic that has partially boiled on the sides at the top of the "food line" due to having lids on.

        • @Viper8: The lids are also usually made of lower quality plastic (unless there's a steam vent built-in). You could verify this with some brands like tupperware that prints the grade of plastic (the lid is 4, and the container is usually 5).

        • @CocaKoala:
I don't think that's the case here. The plastic looks and feels identical for lid and container. With Tupperware its blatantly obvious the plastics used are different in most cases.

        • @Viper8: Sure, it may or may not be. I just do not know without the markings because at least Tupperware clearly marks the quality on the lid as well as on the container. In either case, I'm not going to be heating food in plastics, so I think it's not of my concern. I just wanted to put it out here as someone else who would heat food in plastic containers may become aware of it.

FYI these aren't marketed as water tight/resistant. Despite having a gasket, these leak water.

    • I think the gasket is just there as a marketing thing

      • +4

The gasket does a good job with things like soup, and reducing smell transfer in the fridge. Not water tight, but still somewhat functional. This is just from my anecdotal use, others might disagree.

        • +3

Yea completely different experience here. As soon as the lid is slightly warped out of shape it doesn't evn make direct contact, let alone a seal. It needs clips on all 4 sides, not just 2.

    • +1

Yes, while Sistema have their uses, and I use them, I can speak from experience about the seal - that these aren't good for stopping a pantry moth infestation for example. Something like an Oxo Pop is better if you need a really good seal, expensive though.

      • +1

Speaking from experience, if you wanted to bury some stuff in Sistema containers, it’s a good idea to seal them within a plastic storage bags, and include some desiccant gel packets or sachets. You can get bulk packs of desiccant on eBay.

        • What does it do?

        • @PeeDee:

Desiccant helps with any residual moisture. It won’t help if there is a leak however.

      • I was considering buying it for the purpose of preventing pantry moths until I saw this comment. Thanks

        • If you're interested in Oxo Pop there's a decent value pack on Williams Sonoma (edit: was $130, now $150). Might be worth looking in Costco from time to time too, I got a cheap pack there once. There are probably cheaper brands too that work, I've seen them on Amazon and such. I got some secondhand Crofton branded ones too which are good.

What you'd want are containers with a vacuum seal, the Oxos use pushbuttons and my Croftons use a screw top (after fully inserted), which both work. Clip on won't be good enough for moths, although anything is better than nothing.

Basically what you need is a lid that gets fully inserted, and then has a mechanism to seal in a separate action.

        • @mattythecapybara: got links for the oxo pop and croftonsyou use? :)

        • @abadacus: The pops: http://www.williams-sonoma.com.au/oxo-pop-storage-container-…. As I said this specific page has been cheaper ($130 w/ free shipping). It's a lot more expensive to buy them individually though still, if you want extra quantities of certain sizes, but it still may be less than the $$$ of your potential food/clothes loss.

My Croftons I can't find anywhere (looks like that's an Aldi brand, so maybe was a temporary buy), as I said I got them second-hand, but I took a photo to give you an idea of the mechanism. https://pasteboard.co/HuvfCkk.jpg I don't have as many of these so I'm not as certain about them, but after a few months the 6 or so I have seem uncompromised.

There are a lot of cheaper ones on Amazon US that I haven't tried, but look like they might fit the bill, e.g. https://www.amazon.com/Special-Food-Storage-Containers-Set/d…, but you know, no shipping to AU, and this type of thing is bulky, so who knows how much in forwarding costs you'd get hit with. And this may be something when going for a cheaper brand might run you into trouble, I'm not sure.

    • Agreed. These things are turd.

Retiring every single one i (over)bought. The stupid o-ring ruins it all.

      • On the plus side, they are fine for non-food storage too.

Great post OP. I use containers from the Klip It range frequently.

Anyone know of a Glass version of these? I heard Pyrex are good. Trying to move away from microwaving food in pastic containers

    • I transfer mine into a bowl/plate.

It is nicer than eating from a container.

      • +1

Ideally, that would be preferred but when on the go its difficult. Would be nice to have a glass set.

    • +7

IKEA actually do a decent line of glass containers, for a good price (https://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/S19269121/). Another perk is that they're also sold as individual parts (i.e. the container, the lid and the seal), so you don't need to replace the whole thing if, say, a lid gets damaged.

      • Thanks for the link. That looks like a pretty good option at a cheap price. Will drop by Ikea this weekend and pick up a couple.

      • How do they perform? Any leaks? Looking to use one as a lunchbox

    • Had a Pyrex set, put on the lid on with a very hot dish in there, into fridge. The low pressure system that was then created caused the now hot soft lid to warp into the dish and the flange to bend out, no more working lid. Pyrex sent new lid after a few emails.

Will go with IKEA suggestion, thanks.

I notice it says "Usually dispatched in 1-2 months" WTF??

Do Amazon.AU pre-order from Zapals or something??

Other than that, an awesome deal…!

    • "Do Amazon.AU pre-order from Zapals or something??"
      Hahaha
      Or Gear Best Buy lol.

An excellent addition to orders is this Sistema Klip It 3L Food Storage Container for only $3.00!

  • Thanks OP. Just got the $10 Prime video promotional credit so got two for under $25 delivered.

  • Might wait and see if there is anything worth buying in the prime sale. Might get 2 of these for $15 with the $10 off promo. Seems better then your usual Coles/woolies 50% off sales

    • I use these all the time and have purchased this combination before from Coles. For my family of four most of these containers are too small. We mostly use the 1 lt size or even bigger. They also stack very very well in the fridge.

  • Thanks for the post , ordered 4 sets for different family members .
