EB Games currently has online and in-store Atari Classics Vol. 1 and 2 for XBOX ONE and PS4 for $9 each, new. They're currently around $15 - 30 elsewhere.

For me, I'm having a little debate over whether I want these. Part of me wants them and says I'll play them for sure. But then there's this other part of me that's saying these will not be much fun and I definitely shouldn't buy…

  • Can anyone recommend which volume to get for an Atari virgin?
Some highlights from each volume as well?

    • Can anyone recommend which volume to get for an Atari virgin?

      Both

    • Neither has Pitfall. 1 has pong, so probably 1.

    • Neither has Gemstone Warrior - my all time favourite nostalgic game which I played to death and beyond as a kid. I will pass on these.

  • Volume 1: 2 player Air-Sea Battle and Bowling

Anything before NES is unplayable unless you suffer from Nostalgiaitis.

      Some games hold up okish.

      Eg.
      Pitfall
      Mario Bros
      PacMan
      Joust
      Frogger
      Space Invaders
      Super Breakout

Any of them a could play for a while without getting too bored.

What amazes me is there’s still development going on with these old consoles. Some dude made a Mario game for Atari and it’s pretty amazing considering the age and limitations of that system. There’s also a sonic game too.

    • Kaboom is good, only because its unique because of the paddle controller. Combat is still fun. Agree with you for the most part though.

    • @juiciness

      Spoken like a true Gen-Y'er.

  • There's things I want on both :(
Not going to get both volumes though.

Edit: Got Vol 1, C&C stores were rather sparse though! Volume 2 seems to have more options for pick up.

geez when i buy something the price drops (or if i don't buy it.. it goes out of print), I got each volumes for $19.

Emulate, Emulate, Emulate. This will satiate any nostalgic desire, and cost you nothing. And then you will realise that yes they were fun and yes they bring back some great memories, but you don't need to spend a cent unless you need a device to play it on :) Also, why is Space Invaders never in any of these packages?

I own an Atari 2600, and can tell you these collections are awful except for maybe 3 or 4 games (Yars Revenge, Missile Command, Warlords, and maybe Star Raiders which rubbish compared to Solaris). And Warlords is a multiplayer only game, that is designed for special spinner controller… so it's mostly unplayable.

Atari was notorious for churning out shovelware, with games created by individual developers (not teams) over only a few months, on a system that only had 128 bytes of memory. It was only when Activision was formed by a few ex-Atari developers, that quality became a consideration and some stellar titles were created.

So the only worthy Atari 2600 game collections are those made by Activision… not Atari.

Give this a miss, it's just a money grab by whatever hedge fund owns Atari these days.

Give this a miss, it's just a money grab

      It's 18 cents per game.

      • -3

18 cents for a game that was created by one person over a few months almost 40 years ago.
My time is worth far more than that.

      • There's some great games on Steam that are under a dollar. Probably much better value.

      • +8

wow , used to cost 20c per play in the arcade, prices have come down.

      • When these were released on IOS for free, I averaged less than 18 seconds a game, and I like sucky games.

    • Exactly. Only if you want to relive nostalgic 2600 games, Considering these have been released many times before and this collection is only 30% of the 470 total 2600 games released.

    • Yep. I mean… two volumes? Really?

  • Good deal but I'm not putting a disc in for nostalgia purposes. IF they were this price on PSN I'd be down.

  • +3

    No River Raid? No deal.

    • +2

I came here to post just this!

No River Raid or Pitfall, no deal!

      • +1

Those are Activision games, not Atari games.

        • But they were on the Atari console.

        • Yes… but it says "Atari Classics". Anyone from that era would immediately think of some of the most popular games on the Atari… being Pitfall and RiverRaid for sure!

        • Oops.

    • No Barnstorming? No deal.

    • +1

No E.T. the Extra-Terestrial? No deal.

      • +9

You have to dig that one up.

    • +1

No PacMan, no Frogger, no deal!

  • I had a double ended game with spikes peak and ghost manor on it. Great games at the time.

  • Nothing to see here. Sorry, fat fingers.

  • +1

Wish they put all 3 volumes on the one disc/cart like on the switch.

  • it's not just the Atari 2600 games on here.. there are some of the Arcade games as well - but really emulation is the way to go.. I have LAKKA on my $40 AUD android s905x based media player and it runs the Atari 2600 emulator, MAME arcade emulator, NES, SNES, Master system, Megadrive, N64 and PS1 emulators all at full speed with no issues. Games are played on xbox 360 joypads.

  • Where is Galaga? How is this classic anything without Galaga?

  • Don't give Atari any money, lying money hungry assholes…

  • my favourite was Missile Command !!!

  • No phoenix no deal. I spent my childhood (and all my pocket money) on that game.

  • Ill buy it.. Play it once or twice and probably that's it.

  • Very fast delivery, but ordered xbox games and received ps4 games.
