First post, sorry if not appropriate.

Not a sale, but I think this is the current cheapest price for an 8TB My Book, shipped from Amazon US via the Australian website. Much better price than a lot of local stock. It told me the price includes taxes when checking out, and have yet to be stung with any extra GST.

Pretty decent price, BHPhotoVideo had it consistently at ~$265 before new tax laws, so good to see a new avenue for picking one up at an affordable price.

Figured a lot of people might have picked up the free Prime trial with Prime Day, so can benefit from the free shipping.

Note this is the international version so you may need to pick up a US>AUS power adapter
Don't forget to use cashrewards or shopback, currently at 6% I believe (calculated for $232 for me, for some reason).

    • Does that include GST ?

      • Good question. Do they screen all purchases now? Or is it a lottery?

I believe B&H automatically applies GST during the checkout phase since they're one of the 'GST compliant' international retailers.

    • I'm coming up with at lowest 199USD with shipping included (around 265aud?), plus potentially GST, it's a little unclear if you'll get stung afterwards.
On check-out they make you agree to pay any extra costs (taxes/customs), but haven't bought from there since the new tax law. It's been 170usd for a very long time, at least a year - so it makes me feel like they haven't included GST.

Also - I don't think you can get cashrewards on bhphoto so you do miss out on that too.

They're WD80EZAZ drives inside, I have 2 shucked inside my NAS right now (Synology DS216j)

  • Good question. Do they screen all purchases now? Or is it a lottery?

From what I have read, border force still operates under the old 1000 dollar rule as the assumption is that the retailers will collect and it is too expensive to implement at the point of border crossing.

      • Ah ok cool. So if I buy from another shop, say shopmonk, then I prob won’t have to pay GST on $999 MacBook Air, right?

I'd say you should make sure you're in a position to pay the tax if it comes up, unless it explicitly says tax included. If you find a way around it, count yourself lucky, but don't bank on it.

        • In theory, however if you are literally saying 999 you should be leaving yourself a buffer for currency fluctuations etc.

Nothing to screen. These are sold by Amazon Au and price includes GST

Purchased one and shucked(WD80EZAZ), had to remove 3.3v pin for it to work in PC

    • No need to remove 3.3V pin if you (a) use a molex to sata adapter (no 3.3V in molex) or (b) cut the 3.3V line in your Sata cable.

Don't forget to never use molded Molex > SATA adapters.. unless you want a fire..

        • Sorry but what do you mean?

          What is a molded one?

          @SamR:

          https://www.google.com.au/search?q=molded+sata+cable+fire&rl…

Check out some of the links, they're extremely prone to fires

        • I thought it was just me … had a fire in the N54L server around 2 am once, it had just been plugged in for ~3 months, and wasn't under any friction or stress, so, idk.

I could smell it before the smoke detector 'did', but I couldn't work out what was on fire, at all. This was back in 2012 though.

Took both the Molex and the melted 4tb HDD back to the same store to get replaced under warranty. First time they'd ever seen it happen.

'Molex to SATA, Lose all your Data'. love it. Anyway, didn't lose the data on the RAID, as it was running FreeNAS with ZFS. New drive was added in ~9 hours, and i still have the same files/drives running today.

    • what 3.3V?

I thought you just take out the hdd and plug it in the sata cables?
