Tiger Airways: $1 flights on return sector (selected QLD destinations)

180

Just got an email from Tiger: http://www.tigerairways.com/edm/au/index.php starts Saturday for Stripes Members, full public on Sunday. So the first sector is normal price, and the return is $1 on the following routes:

MELBOURNE-Cairns $118.95, $1
MELBOURNE-Mackay $78.95, $1
MELBOURNE-Rockhampton $88.95, $1

TRAVEL: Feb through June. Rockhampton service recommences late March

The Rocky flight is nothing special as its frequently on sale for $50, but the Cairns service not too bad, only problem is you cant price beat as the flights are pretty late at night compared to other carriers.

-If you dont have a debit mastercard its $7.20 CC fee per person, per sector
-Minimum baggage fee is $10 for 15kgs

    FARE: 89.95
    CC FEE: 14.40

Wow, Tiger's credit card fee is 16% of the airfare price. I'm well aware that Qantas charges over $7 and Virgin Blue $4.50, but this takes the cake. I have a Debit Mastercard but I really have to wonder about the fairness of charging that much.

      there's cake?

      nom nom :P

      • I can haz cake

        • i lub cake
          any for i?

        • tiger flavr ggrrrr…

        • the cake is a Lie…

    • yep, sponge cake, free but they have to process a credit card to account for it (normal surcharges apply)
+$10 for a plate and fork,
      +$10 for cream,
      +$10 for icing.

      Drinks: ….

      :)

  • Thanks for the heads up! Hope these dates line up with when I have to be up there…..

Question: Has this in T&C - "Tiger Raw domestic fares must be purchased online using a MasterCard debit card issued by an Australian financial institution"

So can you purchase with say a visa credit card and just cop a surcharge?

    • Yes … $7.20 per person per leg last time I used 'em (& it was over 25% of the price I paid - so I'm not really complaining).

  • For all its worth, it might even be possible to just book a "one way" $1 flight rather than combining both sectors. Tiger's web interface is pretty crap so who knows. Have to wait until the morning!

I'm going to join Stripes in an hour or so - its asking me if I was referred by another member or staff member.

If anyone gets a benefit let me know … Skystar gets first option, otherwise first come, first served. :)

      • Sorry got diverted. Just joined … and thanks for the tip off.

        • Dam! Stripes payment system is down! So I'm not in yet.

"Thank you for using our payment gateway. Unfortunately we are unable to process your payment now. Please try again.
If the problem persists, please call during operating hours (Monday - Friday, 9am to 6pm excluding public holidays):
          Singapore Hotline : +65 62960506
          Malaysia Hotline : +603 89965655
          or email helptelemoney.com.sg"

… and I'll have to start the process again :)

    • Slowly getting there. Payment successfully processed - third time lucky.

Now I just need to receive my confirmation email & password to get up & going :)

  • LOL,thanks OP!

don't forget the "several hours waiting" for a delayed flight or inconvenience of a canceled flight. Last time I flew my departure was 2hrs late and return flight 3hrs late. That's for a 50minute Canberra<>Melbourne trip. Had to then fork out for a taxi because it arrived back in Melbourne so late all the public transport had finished. Tiger would have to pay me for any of their services to be considered a bargain.

You can try to get jetstar to beat their price by 10% and fly with them.

      • +2

I agree. Ring Jetstar & get a Price Beat by 10%, & go with Jetstar.
As long as the Jetstar flights are within the same hour as Tiger sale flights.
        Hassle free.

Yes, last (and only) time I flew with Tiger, they cancelled my flight and put me on a later flight that meant I would miss my meeting. I tried ringing and emailing them with either no answer or no help. I had to book again (this time on Jetstar) to get there in time. So of course Tiger's no refund policy meant I was out of pocket.

Trying to save $20 actually cost me $179. Never again.

      • Something like that happened to me a while ago and after writing to them and complaining they refunded my money.

    • This happened to my partner last week. It's hardly beneficial going Tiger if you are going to be delayed which affects your next days work and causes you to get a taxi as the trains have finished.

I think Tigers on flight service is one of the best but I will probably only get a Tiger flight in the day time in future.

  • This is exactly what I needed to make my Jetstar 2x1 trip to Japan even cheaper!

    • +1

Just be sure to leave plenty of time between Tiger and Jetstar flights. That bargain MEL-Cairns->KIX flight would turn very expensive indeed if a late or cancelled Tiger flight caused you to miss the next leg.

      • can travel insurance help?

      • .
        (dup deleted)

        • no travel insurance wont honor anything with two separate bookings.

I wont feel sorry for you if it goes haywire, nobody books a Tiger flight in front of an International flight!

      • Yeah, I was thinking a whole day before and after. Would you guys think that I still could get screwed?

        • +1

If you leave a day, incredibly unlikely. As much as people like to complain about delayed travel etc. (it's only natural to be more keen to complain than to praise), most of their flights are on time.

"This week's hottest promo deals only available to Stripes members today! … sign up now"

Paid my 30 bucks seven hours ago so I could book these tickets today … haven't received a password.

Waited 25 minutes in vain on the mobile for customer service (03 9999 2888 - they only have one number). To avoid a larger phone bill, have tried countless times from the landline and can't get through at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But there's a justification from a bright spark on Whirlpool: "By not answering you it makes it cheaper for everyone else."

So next time you can't get through … remember its in the (other) customers best interests!

    :)

  • Optus say they can't get through to Tiger but Telstra can.

  • Skystar, if you see this could you tell me if you've seen any of the $1 returns Melb-Cairns apply around weekends? I can't see at the moment because I haven't been able to see the specials today. (I want to take my 11yo son up there for a flying visit, ideally up early Sat & back late Sun, or we could stay up 2 nights if we have to (he could miss one day off school.)

have you clicked the forgot password link, they might resend it to you??

      Example-
      Fri 21st March $1
      Sun 20th March $118

Send me some dates and I will check.

      • Skystar, Sorry was away, for taking so long to reply! … and thanks for all your help.

The password retrieval worked (so simple a solution! - strange I never received the initial email).

Your example dates were perfect too :)

  • I'm hoping for the april school hols!! Can anyone see if they have it available to Cairns, Rocky or Mackay!!! Thanks :)

    • You can get in yourself now.

  • So the $1 fares are only one way??? I cant find any for the return journey

    • yep, $1 off one leg of a return jouney, so effectively 50% off a return booking.
