    Those Kmart ones are quite different though, marble won't be very absorbent and it doesn't say if it has anything on the bottom to prevent scratching. I know which ones I'd go for.

  if these are absorbent, wouldn't they start to stink after a while?

    It's bacteria and fungi that make damp things smell.

    In theory, if they make the holes small enough, water can penetrate but bacteria and fungi can't. Even the smallest bacteria and fungi are much much larger than water molecules.

    I don't know whether this product is made that way, it could just be marketing spin.
