A free type cover (which all its competitors come with anyway..) doesn't make up for the fact you are spending $850 on a tablet with 4gb of ram and a M3 processor.

Debatable… the cheapest iPad Pro is $979, without a keyboard or a pencil.
I use an iPad for my daily tasks but if I had to buy something new I would pick this instead of an iPad Pro.

Regardless of what anyone in Apple's marketing department says, an iPad Pro doesn't even begin to compare.
An iPad is a tablet. Nothing else.

If you wanted a detachable there's plenty of other options. But the keyboard cover isn't that great to type on regardless of what you pick.

Can you make up your mind on what you are arguing?

          @ocoolio: its the one argument??
Spending $850 on a tablet vs spending $979 for a tablet - both are stupid wastes of money.

Both their keyboards aren't made for the amount of typing you do on a laptop. But at least the Surface has Windows 10 so you can actually get apps and not running on an OS designed for mobile phones.

iPad is oversized iPhone. Not even tablet. Just big phone.

I think what's being mixed up here is form factor vs system type.

The iPad is a tablet running ARM architecture and iOS.
The Surface is also a tablet running x86 architecture and Win10.

I like neither of them, both overpriced.
The surface is grossly under specced, you can get away with light specs on android/iOS, but expecting a good Windows 10 experience on an M3 with 4GB of RAM is stupid.

For extreme portability and value i'd take a good Android tablet.

For a light PC experience i'd be looking at a 12" - 14" Lenovo thinkpad on sale for a few dollars more.
Proper i3/5/7 CPU, 8-16GB RAM better performance and longer battery life.

Ultimately, each to their own, but this is my 5c.

          ::edit:: BTW, i up-voted everyone with down-votes.
          Have a great day.

Have you ever tried one? The Type Cover keyboard is excellent, on par with a good laptop keyboard.

        • @pennypincher98: >you can actually get apps and not running on an OS designed for mobile phones

You're getting confused: Google is the one who removed the tablet interface from Android leaving Android tablet users with pointless devices, Apple left their tablet interface in.

@Tycn: Yes, albeit not for a while (Surface Pro 3) but I am not sure it has changed. Have you ever tried to type something on your lap with the keyboard cover? It feels a bit flat on the desk but is functional.

It's fine for short periods but it's not exactly great to write your next book, or even your next essay on.

@Diji1: I'm sorry but things like Photoshop express don't count. The office suite is on there yes, but you can't just download whatever application you need. Things like SPSS or Stata just don't exist on iOS. At least with Android it's more open source.

          @pennypincher98:

I have a Surface Pro 3 and upgraded to the Type keyboard from the SP4.

There was a significant improvement with the keyboard - much better typing experience and trackpad. Suggest you try the newer Type keyboards

        • @Riker88: They are outpricing themselves too much now - or rather they fail to realise they have competition. These days other 2 in 1s are much better value.

        • @virtual81: For extreme portability and value i'd take a good Android tablet.

While I agree with you on the rest of your reply, on this point, no such thing exists…

        • @virtual81:

          I currently own 2 surface pro4s. one i5, 8gb ram 256 gb storage and the other i5 4gb ram 128gb storage
My girlfriend uses the i5 4gb ram 128gb storage one. She's a light user. On paper it does look under specced. I had my suspicion re its performance initially but after watching a few youtube videos I decided to buy it. I am very happy with the purchase. Of course it would struggle if you try to run multiple large desktop software at the same time. if that's your main usage of a computing device, go for a proper laptop and forget about touch screen/portability/relatively long battery life. But for light user whose main use scenarios are web browsing and watching videos, I would definitely recommend surface. m3 chip has more than enough juice to power win 10 (credit to microsoft - they did a great job on win10). when the m3 chip overclocks, its performance is on par with i5 until it thermal throttles. You will only see this if you really push it hard continuously.
A few things I wish the surface could do better
          1. port selection. it is time to include type c (in usb 3.1 gen2 at least. i dont really care about thunderbold3)
          2. lapability. it is a bit hard to use it as a laptop when you are commuting on a train. Typing on the type cover is actually very good if you use the surface on a desk.
          3. less premium for extra ram/storage.

I do agree with you regarding the price. Microsoft does overprice the surface lineup like Apple but I would say the price (848) is fair for a bundle with type cover. Personally it would be better if there is bundle for i5, 128/256bg for $1100/1300.

PS. Andriod tablet is basically dead these days. I own a nexus 10 a few years ago and the user experience is just horrible compare to iPad. A lot of apps are not optimised. I would only consider to buy andriod tablet for kids or for doing specific tasks(amazon kindle fire). I won't recommend it to any normal user.

        • @sol95:
They exist, but are hard to find.
The nvidia shield tablet is a ripper of a unit.
High performance, high res, near stock experience and good battery life.
That said, it's even harder to get now (we got ours from the US).
Samsung tablets are OK on paper, but are expensive and bloated.
Deff not a lot to choose from.

      • Not sure why you got downvotes. I agree with you. This is a perfectly fine option.

        • It's a fine option yes, but for $979?
Why not get a 2 in 1 for that?!

        • @pennypincher98:

It's relative. For some, $979 for this isn't a problem.

        • @beatsntoons: Ok I'll admit that for some $979 isn't a problem. Remember however, we are on a bargains website. Not Reddit.

  • 4GB RAM that is not upgradable. Not to mention how difficult it is to upgrade the SSD. Not really recommended if you want to continue using this in the next few years.

  • Just use cloud storageage to combat the ssd problem

Use a 4 gig USB stick to double your RAM to 8GB and you're good to go

  • Any thoughts on CoreM?

Looking to replace an android tablet and use as a portable laptop for Udemy courses/study while at work.

Can VPN into the home and use my NAS so storage isn't an issue and have a VisualBasic/msdn so can unlock things..

  • I bought this a few days ago from Harvey Norman but they've just refunded me because they cant get anymore stock of this. So annoyed. Suggestions on what I should get now? I only need it as a secondary pc to use for note writing so the low specs and cheap price was perfect for me.
