  • Am I likely to see fares Melb - Tokyo return for the second half of April drop any further between now and end of 2018?

  • I was looking at some Osaka flights in November, seems like some good value - except for the 8 hour layover at Guangzhou.

Anybody got some good recommendations to kill some time?

    • +3

Been a couple of years since I was last in Guangzhou but it was a pretty horrible transit area last time. If you have access to members lounge it's probably ok.

One of my stop overs a few years ago was 12+ hours and I got put up in a 3.5 star hotel for free and a free 24 or 48 hour transit visa, that was flying China Southern and made it actually pretty pleasant.
Memory is a little foggy but I believe its a 40min transit from airport to the city each way. Probably worth it for the time kill and also the food prices were extreme in the transit wing.

Properly leaving the airport to sight see always makes me a bit edgy on anything less than a huge layover time, my 2cents anyway.

      • I went through Guangzhou on China Southern in March this year and while it's not an exciting airport to hang out in, it was pleasant and comfortable enough for the few hours I was there.

    Great Deal OP
but would prefer to pay a little extra rather than have to sit in a plane full of mainland Chinese tourists (No offence intended)

      • +21

I am Asian myself (Not from Mainland China) and have seen the behaviors of mainland chinese tourists in Thailand, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore. I know it's an over generalisation and there are many well behaved tourists but for myself its personally not worth the risk being stuck with them for 12 hours at 40,000 feet in the air with no way of escape.

        • +4

I was worried flying with air China to Japan. It ended up being one ofthe nicest flights I've had. The staff were extremely lovely and helpful. Other passengers were completely fine.

I will definitely fly with them again.

        • Chinese from Mainland China are the lowest of low. I have seen kids poop in the street, encouraged by the parents lol woot… There is no respect for anyone other than themselves. Spitting everywhere. Shouting. Cut queue. Sadly a lot of them are rich but not civilized.

        • @gutenmuach:
Funnily enough a lot of their uncivilised shit they do to each other they don't get offended by, because it's just their way of life. But you can be restassured that the higher class in HK and Taiwan look down on the mainlanders.

Their lack of civilised culture all started with Chairman Mao and was perpetuated with every subsequent leader including the dictator Winnie the Pooh.

But I'd much rather deal with that than religious zealots & martyrs like you see in America and the Middle East.

        • Aaah brings back memories of Chinese tourists at Hobbiton walking all over the place (instead of sticking to the paths), jumping fences, oh and holding a little girl over a wood pile so she could piss on it. Also seen one get a little boy to piss in a bag right in the middle of Bourke St Mall outside David Jones. All this is the last year. I avoid those kinds of tourists as much as possible. And yes I'm Asian myself.

        • @gutenmuach: After studying Mainland Chinese at close hand over my three trips to China in the last year courtesy of Ozb and Hainan Airlines, I have come to the conclusion that they are actually very nice, friendly and helpful people. Its just that their cultural values have been completely taken away from them, the only values that they now have are what their Government dictates to them. They are kept under very strict strict supervision in their country, so when they are able to escape that strict supervision, however briefly, they are like kids who have been let out of school. So don't deny them their brief pleasure, be understanding that they do not have the liberties, that we have, and let them have their fun.

I don’t take it as a slight against Chinese. Just typical tourists.

Even in China, the crazy behaviour of Chinese tourists is taken as a fact. I don’t know what it is… they can be perfectly relaxed and cheerful at home, but put them on a plane, and it’s crazy times.

Last flight back to China, someone up ahead on the plane asked for a glass of milk, then suddenly everyone wanted one. So they ran out of milk. Then there was screaming from passengers when some got milk and others didn’t. It was almost a riot.

So I had black tea on that flight.

Every time I fly China Sourhern there’s a near riot over one thing or another.

Oh, and at Sydney, the lines for the check-in counters stretch across half the terminal. Almost every passenger has to re-pack their overweight bags. Allow an hour or so for the check in queue.

        • +3

"they can be perfectly relaxed and cheerful at home, but put them on a plane, and it’s crazy times."

Because they think if they paid for it they are the boss, can do whatever they want
At home they are their own boss so they won't boss themselves

So I had black tea on that flight.

          That I can sympathise with.

Every time I fly China Sourhern there’s a near riot over one thing or another.

Every time I've flown with China Southern, there have been no issues or incidents whatsoever. Likewise with every other flight I've taken to/from/within Asian countries.

Oh, and at Sydney, the lines for the check-in counters stretch across half the terminal. Almost every passenger has to re-pack their overweight bags. Allow an hour or so for the check in queue.

          Sounds about normal, TBH.

    • Last time I was travelling in Korea, a guy got up from his seat whilst the plane was about to takeoff… Of course not all Chinese are like that but there's way too many idiots that contribute to their bad reputation.

      • -4

Not all Chinese are like that one Korean guy you saw in Korea? Thanks for sharing that little gold nugget of wisdom.

        • +4

No, he was Chinese. Not sure why you assumed he was Korean when we are on the topic of Chinese tourists…

        • -3

@garffi: You're not sure why I assumed the random guy on your flight taking off from Korea might be Korean?

        • +4

@dm01: Ok, but we are on the topic of Chinese tourists so why would I randomly talk about a Korean? I was just giving a little background, not sure what's to argue here. I saw a person doing something dumb on the plane and it happened to be a Chinese.

        • -4

          @garffi:

Ok, but we are on the topic of Chinese tourists so why would I randomly talk about a Korean?

I don't know, maybe you just want to be one of the cool people sharing your anecdote about an annoying Asian traveller you once encountered?

Your sentence is vague and poorly worded, and without providing any further context other than you were taking off from Korea (South Korea, I assume), that your "guy" is Korean seems as reasonable an assumption as any.

        • +3

          @dm01:

this is the hill you want to die on? lol

        • @dm01: Lol. Ok, your assumption is valid but can’t I let you know that you got the wrong idea? What’s wrong with sharing my story? If no one shares their story/opinion then there wouldn’t be a comment section.

        • -1

@191919: To quote King Leonidas from '300', "Today no OzBargainer dies."

        • -1

@garffi: Of course you can, and there's nothing wrong with sharing…just like there's nothing wrong with me replying, whether to agree or otherwise, and with or without sarcasm!

  • Damn needed a deal for brisbane april 7.

  • +1

How’s the service and seating etc from China southern airline? Decent quality for the price?

    • +2

excellent and very natural friendliness. rice is actually fluffy which is just amazing on a plane for oriental meals. flown about 8 flights this year with southern and very pleased

    • I will never fly China Southern again, staff were rude, they had a blanket no phones or electronic devices policy. No flight mode, nothing. Made a flight to Europe extremely painful, wouldn't even let me play my DS?

      • That jogs my memory on the no electronic devices policy on China Southern.

Does anyone know about Air China? I'm taking a long trip with them and didn't think about this when making the booking.

        • On my flight (June last year) I was told it was a blanket policy on all Chinese Airlines, they were ruthless in enforcing it too.

        • @mezje: This is outdated information, there is now wifi introduced on some Chinese Airlines. Though its not particularly useful, about the only thing that worked was wechat. Still with wechat out I was able to make phone calls for my pick up from Sydney airport.

        • @mezje: Just flew with China Southern last week, could keep devices on as long as airplane mode, even had free inflight WiFi when the plane got to a certain altitude. Could use VPN and access all sites and apps.
One staff forgot my tea and apologised twice, even came back near landing time to apologise again.

  • Perth from $558 Return(flightscout.co)
    06 Sep 2018 - 11 Sep 2018

So I can only have a 5 days holiday because I'm from Perth?

    • +1

Yes, because Perth get all the cheap Bali/Singapore flights so it’s about time the eastern states got a better deal then Perth for once haha

  • Any flights in earlier Feb for Sydney?

  • Oh, September is too early now to get a deal. Need to be in Tokyo mid-September and all I am getting are either a midnight flight in Haneda or long layovers in transit. Does anyone have experience of traveling to central Tokyo from Haneda ariport after midnight?

  • The prices on Flight Scout don't seem to correspond to those on Skyscanner.

For example, I looked at return Sydney flights from 29 Oct to 8 Nov 2018. Flight Scout prices the flight at $574, but the cheapest price on Skyscanner is $667.

What's going on? Are they time-limited deals, or is Flight Scout excluding taxes and other associated flight costs?

    • Flight Scout shows and analyses recently found fares, when you click on a fare you will see how long ago the price was quoted. There is also a note that fares quoted many hours ago may no longer be available. When dealing with sale fares like this the chances of the fare no longer being available are reduced, as with any airfare deal funding sites. They were all corresponding last night when the deal was posted and the system is likely to find more throughout the day.

    • +1

Just quickly checked some dates and most still line up, the ones you mention are quoted 20 hours ago and will definitely stop showing on the site soon.

  • ugh damn…. still waiting for sales for Feb 8th-18th :( always excluded haha

    • I'm looking at 8 - 20. How's your search going?

  • Any Perth - Japan deals for January? Prices are ridiculous this year $1600+ on SQ/CX.

  • China Southern is not bad as far as Chinese airlines go, its China Eastern that's the absolute bottom of the pile. First time I have seen an international flight where the stewardesses had no English whatsoever. And on top of that they were blatantly racist, preventing us from sleeping on empty middle rows of seats, but holding them for Chinese to sleep on. Of course, I knew China Eastern was the pits having flown with them before, but I had no option because it was the first available flight and I had to come back in a hurry due to health and visa issues.
