This time Microsoft has joined the fray, and if you link up your MS Account (Outlook, Hotmail, etc.) the free movie will simply appear in your account.

There is no geographical restriction on Microsoft IDs like there is with Apple iTunes, so as long as you can connect to a VPN and sign in to your Movies Anywhere account, you can get this.

Seems like they're itching to be the next "Ultraviolet" universal platform, combining all the different services. Another (small) step in the right direction…

  • It says "no geographical restriction" but we need a VPN? For the US I assume?

    • The issue with iTunes from memory is you can’t create an account without a funding source, so even if you have a VPN you also need to attach a credit card or a prepaid gift card. Doable but not appealing if you are just linking the account to claim a freebie. That and it’s also not appealing if you have an existing library on an AU account.

Unless I’m mistaken anyway. I linked other (non US) accounts to Movies Anywhere without much issue but iTunes eluded me.

  • "To register you must be a US resident located within the United States, its territories, or certain associated states at the time of registration."

  • I linked my non-US Microsoft account (using a VPN) and the movie is now added to my list.

However, I'm trying to understand the idea behind Movies Anywhere. I can explore the movies available in my linked accounts and when I choose a movie I will have a list of options where the movie is available. The price is not available until I'm forwarded to the actual page (Prime Video, VUDU, Google, etc.). I might be missing something but not finding very useful.

But… thank you for the movie anyway! ;)

The idea is that Movies Anywhere(MA) is essentially a porting partner to all the other streaming platforms, such as Vudu, Itunes, Fandango now, Amazon and Now MS. Studio's participate within the Movies Anywhere eco system. Any film that is distributed by those participating movie studio will port to all other services that you have connected via MA. Se essentially you can watch those movies on any of those streaming services, depending on the streaming devices you have access to. The quality of he movie will depend on each of the services as not all provide the same level of video and audio quality as the others. So some films that are UHD on one platform may not be on others. For example, Itunes holds no 4k UHD rights for Disney films at this time due to disagreements about what price that Apple wants to charge and what Disney wants for their films in 4k. Vudu currently has limited films in 4k from Fox(though this is changing). You essentially purchase you films from any of the streaming platforms as mentioned above that gives you the best price. Again, as long as the studio who owns the film, participates in MA, it will port to every other service. At this points, Lionsgate and Paramount do not participate so any of their films can only be redeemed at either Itunes or Vudu/Fandango but will not port until they join MA. Also most smaller independent studios also do not participate at this time.

Once caveat to be aware of with MA and connecting non US accounts from GP and MS is that films will port from MA to your non us account, but not the other way. MA does not like non us accounts so the flow is only one way. Suspect this is by design. So if you want a full 2 way eco system between all devices, you need to have all your services setup in the US.

Hope this gives you some idea of how it all works. I hooked up my MS account tonight and it works great. even get to stream my 4k Disney movies that i couldnt beforehand on the ATV 4k via Itunes.

Didn't work for me. Detected a VPN, saying I could not register with a VPN. Then after using opera it says I need to be a US resident. IP starts with 77.111……

    • See if you can find someone in the US to setup account for you. Once its setup you dont need it again.

    • Yep - doesn't work with Freedome. Any ones that do and I can use for free for 5 minutes?

  • For what it’s worth I think the VPN is only required to setup the Movies Anywhere account initially. I don’t normally have a VPN and can access the account without one after initially setting it up with one. Just used some Chrome extension from memory. Didn’t need to use a VPN to link to the MS account tonight either.

Note the experience hasn’t been great though linked to AU accounts. Only a subset of my films have flown through to the service, and being an Apple user the restrictions on needing a US iTunes account doesn’t help either.

    • Had no issues with my library. Pretty much all bar a small amount have flowed through. Biggest bonus is being able to watch Disney 4k without Vudu now. Hopefully MS gets on board with Atmos in their library also.
