I'm impressed that your HTC One M8 is still chugging.
      Mine conked out in Feb/March.

  • +1

Holy moly that price. Luckily I'm off the Apple/Samsung/Good phones train and have boarded cheap OPPO phones instead.

  • +2

Reading this on my ancient note 3 xD

  • Has anyone had a chance to check if there are corporate discounts available?

It's also listed on the Samsung education website but there is no price:(

    • I had a look this morning - prices are the same. No special deals.

      • Is that corporate or education? Education prices are now up and are the same as retail

  • +4

No, thanks. I'm still using S5 and it's doing great. I ain't paying $1000 for a phone, let alone $1500. That's just insane!

    • +2

      I ain't paying $1000 for a phone, let alone $1500.

Well enough people are. They wouldn't sell these if no one would buy it.

      • +1

Quality android smartphones are a dime a dozen. There is not reason to pay $1.5k when other brands may offer a similar spec for $600 to $800.

        • +1

Normally I'd agree with this but after essentially getting the Pixel 2XL for free (Telstra Promo) I'd actually be more inclined to spend $1k on upgrading rather than $600..

        • +2

You want a reason? Because people have the money. To some thats reason enough.

You can argue x will do so and so what y will do for less but at the end of the day its their money to spend on whatever they like.

  • +1

This? Or a high end gaming rig?

    • +3

High end gaming rig? Maybe 10 years ago. This price will barely get you a lower mid-tier gaming pc now.

      DDR4 16gb costs you $250 alone.

      • $600 GPU 1080
        $250 RAM 16GB DDR4
        $280 CPU Ryzen 2600X
        $100 PSU Whatever 650w
$10 OS Windows 10 ebay key
$259 Mobo and case, whatver easy

      • Strange. $250 will get you most of the way to an Xbox One X.
        PC is getting expensive.

        • +1

          High end is, yeah.
Looking at about $500 to get a PC with equivalent performance.
And you can't compete with the $199 PS4 slim deals.

    • Both can play Fortnite?

  • +1

Wow, I can get a decent mid-high end 'gaming' laptop for cheaper than this phone. Even their Galaxy Book 12" 256GB 4GLTE flagship device I get get cheaper than this.

Now do I go for Note 8, when they're heavily reduced or wait a bit for the Note 9 initial demand is over.

    • +2

lol.. very subject what is "Decent" and "Gaming"..

      • +1

If decent = performs better than current gen consoles then yes, easy

  • +1

Amazing to watch the development. Less and less innovations in every generation but higher and higher prices. Introduction of a new phone has become an event. Sick world

  • +1

It has the same price at jb. So u can use the discounted gift cards.

    • From where i can get discounted jb cards ?

      • Buy cashrewards wish gift cards online, using which buy jb cards from WW, using which buy this. 5% for all this effort.

      • entertainment book, agl rewards, maybe elsewhere too.

  • +4

Phone hasn't been released yet and the price is already reduced, only Samsung can do that.

    • +5

Phone hasn't been released yet and the price is already increases, only Appple can do that.

    • +1

They always have a preorder offer.

    • Can you really call it the RRP if they haven't sold it for that yet?

    • +1

If it was Apple selling their new phone at this price. People would be whining to death in this thread. Now that Samsung has realeased phone for same price as iPhone X. People are trying justify the price tag.

  • Had a peek at note 8 to see if it the price had dropped.
    But still $1078

Was hoping it was about $600

    • +4

      are
      you
      serious

    • +1

      Tell him he's dreaming!

      • actually i will tell him to keep peeking

      • Yep. Dreaming.

Given that some grey imports have been selling for 790 whilst 890 for aus stock on sale on here.
You'd assume at least a small price would be likely.

    • If i can get a note 8 for $600…im buying 2 right now.

      • let me know when it happens.
I will wait for your reply….patiently

  • +3

Phones, the new status symbols lol

    • +5

      it is… if you're 10

      • it is… if your circle of friends give a toss.

        Mine don't.

        • +11

Gravy's smart. Gravy's friends are smart. Be like Gravy.

high fives while holding my s6 in the other

    • It's always been a status symbol since the days of the analogue "water bottle" phones. Not "New"..

  • +2

Is there any practical reason why a phone could need 8gigs of ram?

    • +1

Games use more and more, and with the docking station it has there is a possibility for more multi-tasking. If you do not need the RAM, then you might not need the device.

    • +1

I asked this before and got negged, but am genuinely curious.
Even a game like Fortnite only recommends 3GB of ram.

If you do not need the RAM, then you might not need the device.

Lol what?? That makes zero sense. You can still have a good phone even if you won't constantly utilise 8GB of ram.

      • +7

        porn sites always open tabs..

      • +1

Then go for the 6GM model. But you are running other apps when you play games even, like mobile recording streams etc. Line or Discord. Where more RAM helps.

        • -3

More ram does help but I've found I've never needed more ram than I have got (4GB).
I've normally got heaps of chrome tabs open, a game running, discord in the background, YouTube/Twitch/Netflix in idle or use. It might use 3GB at a stretch.

Do people really need to do almost three times the amount of what I do?

        • +2

@pennypincher98: I guess phone designers should base their designs on what you do, as you seem to set the industry standard.

But this comes with Dex built in. That has a potential to increase the RAM usage, for multi program instances.

        • -2

@Rumbaar: lol the sarcasm and snide comments aren't necessary. If I was a very heavy user I wouldn't be doing it on a phone…

        • +2

@pennypincher98: You do not seem to be the market for Samsung NOTE type phones then.

      • Its also the same with PCs everyone recommends they need 16GB when 90% of normal customers dont even need 8GB lol

    • +1

Future-proofing. Phones were fine with 2GB of RAM back in the Android Kitkat days. Those phones can barely perform hitch-free with newer software. Looking at you Google Chrome.
If I am going to throw money on a device that I intend to keep for a couple of years, I'll be making sure it won't struggle with multitasking 2 years down the line. To this end, 8GB of RAM is always welcome.

      • the problem is, you probably will still upgrading your phone next year :D

    • +2

Samsung DEX desktop mode. Runs "ok" with 4GB RAM, better with 6GB and probably a bit overkill with 8GB.

I'm running about 6 apps (MS Word, Explorer, Messenger, poweramp etc) at the same time in DEX typing this message along with half a dozen tabs opened with about 1.9GB RAM free.

    • Touchwiz

    • Phones don't really need 8gb of ram. But then again, when it comes to shopping for flagship devices, when was it ever a question if need? More likely a question of want.

The way android manages ram, you will pretty much always utilise most of it. So I wouldn't even mind having 12gb of rams if it didn't cost me much extra

  • there is no way for me to buy 1500 Samsung

  • This or iphone x ?

    • +1

Wait a month and see what the new iPhone features will be - usually announced in September.

      • +2

Customisable home page with widgets… The apple fanbois/gals will go crazy for this stellar innovation the likes of which hasn't been seen before.

        • Damn that's crazy.

*sits here turning room heater on and off, checking the latest shows, viewing data balance, reviewing the next weeks weather, assessing my parcel tracking status and viewing current daily steps from homescreen widgets*

        • @potplanty: Shots fired!

        • [@potplanty] time-traveller? I thought you guys had rules for sharing new tech with the rest of us?

  • +3

what the hell 1499 get outta here.

  • Looks like another flop like the S9. Everyone is waiting for the X

    • Samsung certainly sold fewer S9’s than hoped. As prices head north, long consumer warranties and people’s wallets mean there needs to be an overwhelming reason to upgrade beyond those who always spring for the latest. 5G maybe? 3D cameras? True wireless charging? Who knows.

  • -1

Here are a few quick "notes"
    - 4000mah battery
    - 2x Optical Zoom
    - SoC is significantly slower than SD845

My experience is Qualcomm chipsets have better phone reception than Samsung

    • +3
      • 512 GB, largest ever for a phone
      • 8GB RAM, same

The exynos 9 is slower in some tasks, but not significantly. Meanwhile it is actually much faster than even the best from Apple in video processing tasks.

To sum up, $1499 is reasonable for 512GB model. For 128GB it is not.

      • -3

512GB and 8GB RAM isn't the larges for a phone, maybe largest for a Samsung phone.

        • What's higher?

        • -1

@bchliu: Who mentioned higher? They said "Largest ever for a phone", it's not.

        • @Rumbaar: it IS largest ever.

        • @Rumbaar: I asked you.. what phone has higher specs than the Note 9 which you have aluded to before. Which phone is higher, Rumbaar?

        • What's equal?

  • +2

Also in the US you get access to pre-order bonuses like headphones or even v-bucks. But I'm not sure if it's discounts like this deal.

  • +1

Seriously at the price point of $1799 retail price its a matter of time where they will charge the price of a phone similar to an expensive laptop like $2599 …..Don't they understand that the cheap Chinese brands are already selling similar models at half their price?

The price is getting ridiculous like the apple phones. It's a freaking substitute good (android vs other android phones/android vs ios) but strangely apple phones are the only brand that has a Giffen effect….I don't know why but I am sure it's because of Steve Jobs creating the trend of must-have new apple products.

    • I'm not sure about Chinese phones but Samsung definitely has the best amoled screen out there. I just switched from iphone x to s9.

  • -1

Happy with my $750 LG V30

  • +1

Wait for the price to drop to 1000, then will wait for Harvey Norman Amex deal and use 5-6 card to purchase it!

Did that with my note 8, total cost $790.

    • Can u elaborate it further ?
What was the amex deal and which amex card is required for that ?
In which month was that deal ?
      Why use 5-6 cards ?

  • Holy moly. It's weird how flagships are becoming more expensive when budget phones are becoming better value.

  • This is getting into ridiculous territory. The screens are too small to be useful gaming machines and you don't need a high end machine to update your social media; no matter how many selfies you take. The problem is the markets are saturated with phones so they need to make a "premium" product to stand out and to make money. I currently have an iPhone 6+ and I haven't seen a "come to Jesus" phone in the last few years. I will update the battery before the end of the year and then see what comes after that.

    • +1

The screens are too small to be useful gaming machines

Perhaps, if your idea of a gaming rig is to sit 12 inches from a computer screen, but a large hi-res phone in front of your nose would not be smaller than playing console games on a TV.

I currently have an iPhone 6+

Which is perfectly fine — for you.

      • I have no issue with my Ipad as a gaming machine but the phone screens do not allow the real estate for anything with a bit of visual scope. This is why a number of these games have cutdown "pocket" versions for the phones. I don't put my phone in front of my nose to play games; it is awkward to hold, the controls are hard to manipulate and my arms will get tired after a while. I prefer the device to be further away. I presume you don't, generally, watch TV by placing your phone under your nose.

I was explaining why I'm not upgrading. YMMV.

  • geez they are really seeing how far they can push people to pay up these days..

    • We know how well that worked out for Apple.

  • +1

    That's expensive :(

Anyways, if anyone considering buying it. You could use Cashrewards to buy Woolworths e-gift cards at a 5% discount.
Then run to Woolworths to buy JB Hifi Giftcards or Ultimate Teens Gift Card (can be used at Rebel, Boost, JB Hifi, City Beach…)

    From $1499 (or $1500)
-5% ($75) egift cards via Cashrewards

If you are a Woolworths rewards member, for in this week's Woolworths Catalogue (On sale Wed 8th August), members can earn 1000 Bonus Points when buying $50 Ultimate Teems Gift card - can be used at JB Hifi (page 32)
    1000 Reward points = $5
I suspect each card holder can only get this 1000 reward points once.
If you are one of those Ozbargain hunters, you could get 30 Woolworth everyday rewards card, thus 30,000 reward points.
That's worth $150 (in total). However to use these individual reward points, you will need to have a balance of 2000 points to redeem the $10 off future purchases at Woolworths.
    - 10% ($150)

If you are travelling overseas, you could claim back GST via Tourist Refund Scheme
    - 9.09% ($136.37)

Final price $1,137.63 +$1 (if u get 30 Giftcards X$50 =$1500, as the price is $1499, I suspect you wont get the $1 change)

    • EDIT:
A conversation with woolworths rewards team on August 10th, reveals each member can buy up to 10 giftcards. Thus 10,000 points. So, you will only need 3 Woolworth Rewards cards instead of 30 Woolworth rewards cards. Idk but that's my conversation with a Woolworths rewards team member. I am not keen on Samsung Note 9 but I might use it for stock up on Netflix cards hehe.

      You are connected to Jubair.
Jubair: Hi, Welcome to Woolworths Rewards! You are talking to Jubair, how may I help you today?
Hi I am looking at this week's catalogue (August 8th) page 32 on giftcards
You : It says $50 giftcard Ultimate Teens, uber, Netflix etc… earn 1000 Bonus Points
Jubair: Thank you. Let me have a look in to that please.
Jubair: Hi, you will earn 1000 points for every $50 gift card.
Jubair: Is there any other query I can assist you please today?
You: btw does it mean there is NO LIMIT on earning the bonus points…from the giftcard
You: I could like buy a year worth of Giftcards and it will still give me 1000 bonus points for each $50 purchased
You: like 10 Ultimate Teens giftcards = 10,000 Bonus points
Jubair: Let me find that for you please.
Jubair: I can confirm the maximum amount of gift card that you should be able to purchase is 10.
      You: Ok. thank you.
      You: 10 gift cards = 10,000 points
You : Is there a Reference Number I can make to this chat for future reference. just incase, Woolworth rewards do not reflect 10,000 points…
Jubair: You can save this chat. If you can provide me your Rewards card, I can leave a note in your account.

    • Edit:
The GST refund is based on $1499 ($136.37)
It is possible that the JB Hifi will use the RRP of $1799 in its tax invoice ($163.55)
This is based on my previous experience buying from JB Hifi https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/375033
The tax invoice was for the RRP, they just gave me JB Hifi Giftcards at the cash register to reduce and match the promotional price.

If JB Hifi continues with this practice, thus you can claim more from GST refund
And the final prince will be $1,110.45 +$1
A total discount (equivalent) of $387.55 (Cashrewards/Woolworth Rewards/GST refund) and $300 (off RRP from JB Hifi) = $687.55?
