I have this from a previous deal but was of no use when I needed to use it. Wouldn't do anything to the screw, screw was still pretty screwed up at the end when I gave up. Would be useful to have some video or instructions on how to use it

      • Thank you very much

Doesn't your search facility on YouTube or on google.com work? There are hundreds of videos and sites that tell you how to use this.

  • A cheap set of these are very hit and miss in their usefulness. I had a busted drum bolt in the back of my washing machine, and the extractor thread was destroyed when I tried it there. A friend brought around a more expensive set and it came out first go.

Don't buy these due to risk of breakage of cheapies!

Seriously.. screw extractors that break are your worst nightmare. It's much worse than the original problem you had. They are likely to be tougher metal than the screw, but still not up to the task of extracting without breaking. Because they are tougher, when they break you can't drill them out. Maybe if its shitty enough metal you can use a centre punch and cobalt bit.. if you're extremely lucky. Otherwise you'll need to do major damage to the appliance/house/etc to extract an extractor, or professionals may be able to do it for $$$. DONT go cheap.

Also, the fluting on screw extractors.. they are not all created equal. Visually, some don't have the grip that others do.

I've found the shape of the Sutton ones to be good. Perhaps get yourself the Bordo set for $50 (ebay) which comes with appropriately sized Cobalt drill bits.

    • Thanks - really useful info.

    • I agree, decent traditional extractors are the best.. but I have a set of these cheapies with the cone-heads also and I've found them pretty handy at times… on hex-head cap bolts/screws that have been rounded out, you don't even need to drill them, the cone bites into the hex well… and on stuffed Phillips head screws these are good because you don't have to drill very deep, the teeth on the cone grabs into the remains of the Phillips cross…

For large or critical/important bolts I'd always use decent ones…

      • I agree. what about the screw extractor from ALDI? Any good?

    • I was thinking the exact same thing, then i scrolled down & saw ur comment..

100% hit the nail on the head…

    • I got some a while back for shits and giggles and they are marked HSS, but yeah, quality seems average.

      • Screw extractors shouldn't be HSS - they are meant to be tougher than the screw being extracted. Probably explains why the quality seems average.

They're fine for most applications but only a fool would use them for something critical. A neg is not warranted, it's like you giving a neg to a generic drill because you only use trade quality tools, the generic drill will still work for it's intended application but won't stand up to trade use.

  • I always try the rubber band under a normal screw driver trick first. If that doesn't work, I use a cheap jelbo screw extractor set from Ali Express. I found these gear best ones are too big for smaller screws.
