Jeez get your $11.20 ones from Dan Murphys with Free Shipping and your $12.80 from BIG W and you're laughing

  • Is the kit a good deal?

Kinda tempted to give it a go :P

It's ok I guess but I would suggest look on Gumtree or eBay first for a 2nd hand kit & the seller will usually throw in a lot of extra stuff like bottles etc.

Otherwise do a search for your local home brew shop. While they will charge more than buying a Coopers Kit from Big W, the advice you get and the quality of the kit will be a lot better. They usually come with a good quality bench capper which makes life a lot easier. You will make the money back anyway the more brews you do, lol.

Also don't get a fermenter where the sides curve in at the top & has a screw top lid, these are harder to clean.
You want one with straight sides and a rip lid like this.

If you end up buying that kit it’s currently cheaper at Dan Murphy’s - $90 delivered. And I’d recommend getting glass bottles. Beer out of plastic just doesn’t taste right.

Thanks HPJack, added to the description.

The kit is the same price through the Coopers website now directly with Free Shipping if you wanted to go down that route - But yeah Second hand is good too. However it was good to just get the kit with everything in it.

PET Bottles will do you well without a bench capper until you decide to get into Kegging.

      Nope.

Used the old 30 liter Coopers fermenters. Coles used to sell the 23L ones.

Stick on thermometer is handy. So is the mixing spoon.

Used soft drink bottles are excellent. Use 55C hot water to disinfect them. Had a bit of aluminium security gear as a drying rack, with a laundry basket underneath.

      Sugar as a primer.

Bottle several days after the airlock stops bubbling.Let most, but not all the yeast settle.

Use the push up plastic thingy that opens when pressed to the bottom of the bottle.

Big cardboard box with a thermostat controlled column heater. Or build your own box.

      It's all about cleanliness.

Really tempted to get the DIY Beer Brew Kit. The only thing stopping me is that I wouldn't do it straight away… and I don't know how.

    Great post, WatchNerd.

It's stupidly easy to brew moderately good beer with an extract can, and you can buy a lump package from the Coopers DIY website with all the gear and instructions you need throughout the process for a decent price.

Generally when I used extract cans the only things I would add would be some sugars/malt, hops and maybe some more grain - both of which you can buy from a local brewing shop.

  • I have a coooers craft home-brew kit in which I successfully made my first brew. Do these cans come with the yeast under the lid? If so, is that all I need? I know I need carbonation drops, but what else?

    • Is this the kit you’re referring to? Because that’s only a 15L fermenter, these cans make 23L unless you concentrate them. Yes, they include yeast, you just need to add 1kg of fermentable (sugar, dextrose or brew enhancer).

  • Yes, that's the one. I didn't add any of the fermentables last time. Will it still turn out alright if it's concentrated?

    • I didn't add any of the fermentables last time.

I believe the can that comes with that fermenter (1.3kg Mr Beer Bewitched Amber Ale), is still designed to have fermentable added (dependent on volume of water used). It’s important to add the extra sugar (not only to increase the alcohol content), as it acts as a preservative.

Will it still turn out alright if it's concentrated?

Maybe, but if you concentrate the kit to say, make 11.5L instead of 23L, the end result will have twice the intended bitterness and colour, though some people like it that way. Another option would be to make up half the can (with 500g sugar) to 11.5L and keep the remaining extract covered in the fridge for the next batch.

  • Yeah it will turn out ok, you will have to see. The fermentables boost the alcohol content and give the beer more body, vs a watery beer. Saying that, if it is a little consentrated, it may compensate to some extent.

  • Get yourself an $11.20 can of Stout, an $11.20 can of dark ale, a $4 kilo of dextrose. Mix it up, leave it be and next winter you'll have some proper stout.

Thomas Cooper's Bootmaker Pale Ale, Brew A IPA and Amber Ale are $13.40 now. I think there was a price error in the catalogue and they have lowered the actual price to match what was printed in the catalogue.
