  • Samsung Just announced a new line of 144hz , 2k "affordable" monitors.

    Around £309.99 or $400 US

Wonder what that means for aus though

    • IPS? G-sync? 27in?

      • IPS yes - but g-sync hahaha no affordable monitor can be g-sync! nVidia demands licensing which makes then expensive out of the gate.

        • +1

If a 2080 can reliably achieve 144Hz without drops, is G-sync even needed?

        • +1

          @FatPenguin:

Depends how long you plan to use the graphics card for. If you're upgrading every generation then you may not need adaptive sync tech but if you tend to wait a couple generations between updates then towards the end of your GPU's lifecycle you'll be happy you splashed out on gsync or freesync.

        • @FatPenguin: 27” and 32” sizing by the way.

Hmmm that’s a hard question but likely a no for most people. Screen tearing happens but it happens so fast in a frame/few frames it’s not an issue for most.

        • +1

          @Saudade:

That makes sense. My opinion would be to avoid the high outlay on getting G-sync and instead factor in a future cost of upgrading the GPU a bit earlier than you might have otherwise.

But, that aside, I consider a monitor a long-term investment so have less qualms about spending big for the full fleet of features.

        • @FatPenguin: Spend $200 later on imaginary video cards and have low settings or screen tearing for the entire time you have the monitor, what great advice.

        • +1

@FatPenguin: Yes because no matter how reliable, there will be frame dip, when there is frame dip, there will be tearing.

        • @Letrico: That sounds right.

        • @Letrico: frame dips rarely happen on modern graphics cards, if you not going nuts on the graphic settings.

        • @frugal investigator: Well that is not the choice of the card, but the choice of the game.

        • @Letrico: if the game is tearing with bad frames by accident it is hard to see in 144 frames per second as opposed to purely terrible programming which is not resolved by freesync or g-sync because they will display it as they think it is the intended design.

Example - you see tearing all the time in Star Citizen even though I use freesync - it thinks it is normal is display that way.

from the news I've read, they are budget monitors so they are neither Gsync nor Freesync enabled.

That's kind of… not great for $400 price point. You can see the pre-order here.

      • I have heard theyre freesync?
see if I can find a link. Surely free sync is cheap enough to put in?

Edit: looks like you are right, what a shame

2k is almost same as 1080p remember that

Not a bad deal, I've had the Acer Predator xb271hu and most recently the AOC ag322qcx, the AOC was crap so I wanted to go back to something similar to the Predator and found the MSI MAG27CQ, 144hz, VA paired with the GTX1070 and it's the same as my old Predator for the fraction of the price, around $500 here https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MSI-Optix-MAG27CQ-27-WQHD-144Hz-…

The re-sale value of the Asus ROG would be better but if you can't stretch your budget to $846 than i recommend the MSI. It comes with freesync which wont work with the Nvidia cards but you won't needed it anyways as the monitor is 144hz and it's flawless. IMO Gsync is only good for monitors with lower Hz, anything over 100Hz and you won't need it.

    • +3

quiet the opposite. You need sync technologies for when your computer cant keep up with the higher refresh rates. If your PC can only put out 60-70fps for a title, to a 144hz screen, sync tech will resolve tearing without having to lock to a lower refresh rate.

      • -1

Right, but why would anyone get a gsync monitor which is expensive if they didnt have the hardware to back it up with?

        • +2

for the reason kill joy just mentioned. you might have some lower end games that can easily get to 144fps (on a 1060 for a example) but only hit ~60fps in something like battlefield. if getting rid of tearing and lowering input lag, a gsync monitor is great regardless of how good/bad your gpu is

        • +1

For example, a laptop. My laptop is G-sync, which is great because as it ages it's still going to play great even if the FPS drops well below its 120hz refresh rate (but above 60hz i'd argue).

Im on my 3rd PG279Q and still have quality issues.

The first panel bought locally in melb had excessive screen bleeding and was very visible from front on.

Swapped the first panel for another one and it had the same screen bleed issue so returened got a refund.

Bought the Third panel from Computer Alliance Ebay sale and it still has (what i'd deem as excessive) screen bleed but alot less than the first two panel and its also got a hot pixel. I'd have to pay out of my own pocket to freight the panel back to CA for warranty inspection and that'd cost a butt load so decided to deal with it and kept it.

    • I've been thinking of paying more at a local retailer so as to allow for exchanges/refunds.

May I ask which retailer you bought from in Melbourne (MSY? Centrecom? Scorptec?)

How easy is it to exchange for another? Similarly, how easy is it to give up and get a refund?

      • +1

Was from Scorptech. They're great to deal with actually, bought it in and they tested on the spot and gave me an exchage/refund straight away after filling out some paperwork.

In hind sight what i saved from buying from CA with the ebay sale would be all but wiped out if i was to freight the monitor back to Brizzy

        • Thanks. I might use Scorptec in that case. South Melb or Clayton?

        • @FatPenguin:

          Clayton

    • that is exactly the reason keeps me away from this line up. but i am sure as time goes by, more ppl buying, more manufacutre is making, the better the panel will be.

sorry to hear your story, hope its ok now.

  • I bought my Asus Rog from a store for about $1.2k a couple of years ago and had them take it out of the box and check for any screen issues (dead pixels, backlight bleeding etc) and was given the all clear. I can't however overclock it to 165hz, maybe because of my graphics card (gtx 780).

    • What fps are you getting in 2018 with a 780?

I ask because I actually only have a 1060 (maybe ~10% higher benchmark than a 780), which I presume won't achieve frames >60 for high settings / AAA titles.

      • +1

I dont play too often anymore but I get 144frames in Cs go on medium/high settings, 60frames in pubg low/medium settings and I can get 60 frames in bf1 if I turn some settings to low/medium.
A 1060 wouldn't do too well 60> especially when it comes to newer games.

        • +2

Yep. I should have gone with 1080 a while ago, but made the decision to wait for the 2080. Not sure that was the right thing to do; anyway, let's wait for those benchmarks.

  • +1

Really really want to buy one of these but I’m too scared of the QC issues given the amount of cash i’d have to throw down.. there just aren’t many other options for 144hz, gsync 1440p 1ms …can I have my cake and eat it too?

  • -2

Inferior in every way compared to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/398437

    • +1

I haven't seen this monitor before, so thanks for bringing to my attention.

The talking points that came to me while looking at it:

      1) Not IPS
      2) Some people feel QHD is stretched too much past 27" (plenty don't feel the same way)
      3) Current best price looks to be around the $900 mark

      • Yeap. Putting 1080p on a 27" makes everything large and blurry. 1440p is perfect fit for 27" while 4K fits perfect with 32" in terms of PPI.

Big screen means nothing if resolution is bad.

    • +1

If one was planning to use the monitor for productivity as well, I'd actually argue that a 27" display at 1440p is a better size (both in terms of PPI and physical size). Still, I suppose that's a bit subjective.
