@mgh4me: I'm not making any such claim at all. I'm saying that the scientific method involves a rigorousness and discipline that is completely absent from any of these attempts to dress faith up to look like scientific method or inquiry.

Have your faith, you're entitled. But making it into a pseudo scientific pantomime is really just revealing your anxieties.

        • @0jay: I agree with you wholeheartedly. I am happy that you agree with my point that science cannot disprove that God created the universe.

        • +2

@mgh4me: "I am happy that you agree with my point that science cannot disprove that God created the universe."

I only said that that wasn't my objective, but one thing I can tell you that is stone, cold, fact: science does not seek to disprove god. Science (as a collective pursuit) has more pressing questions to concern itself with.

        • @0jay: I would have thought the eternal state of our soul would be the most essential and pressing concern we should have. What do you think?

        • +1

@mgh4me: I think you are experiencing a pretty profound sense of alienation from the world around you and you seek to salve this anxiety with thoughts about god and your immortal soul. I think christians more broadly are experiencing a similar anxiety around a general sense of irrelevance in the modern world. I reckon if you were genuinely interested in engaging with ideas you would educate yourself rather than try to defend a faith position from a place of ignorance.

I also think I am wasting way too much time distracting myself with OzB when I have better things to do.

Enjoy your evening, I hope you manage to get a bit of rain for other parts of the world that sorely need it that are not so local to youself.

        • @0jay: Not every Christian are "anxious" about their soul. For instance: a Calvinist.

        • @0jay: Yes I do have a position but I am not sure what yours is. You say that your objective was to show that science cannot be used to prove or disprove God and than you state phillisophical assumptions without any scientific basis. Exactly what do you stand for?

        • +2

@mgh4me: I wear a necklace that stops me from being trampled by elephants at home.

        • @mgh4me: You should have started earlier, the country is in severe drought!

The old earth is based on the assumption that the law of physic has not changed. If it changed everything else changed. It can be a good assumption but not necessarily true. In addition, we don't know the time gap between for example Genesis 1:1 to 1:2. It can be a large gap. Another point, the day can have a different meaning. Even Genesis 1 used the word day as 24 hours and also 12 hours. It can be used the day as an indefinite period of time. For example, Genesis 2:4 "…they were created, in the day that the LORD God made them." It will mean all 6 days in this case. Another example, I can say Steven Gerrard was one of the best players in his days. In this case, it will mean an era. A good exegesis of the 7th days will mean an era. Anyway, the young or old earth won't prove or disprove Christianity.

        • +2

Christianity is axiomatically a fact and does not need to be proven or disproved. The question is about what Christians interpret to be the meaning of the contents of the bible and what can be extrapolated from that about the the wider world.

      • What a great response!

    • +1

Lots of Christians believe the universe was made with age. Since God is in control of time and sees it as a single point He can do whatever he wants to reflect age and time.

    • +2

Oh,you believe in NASA? That everything just came into being from nothing? A bang, then completely random evolutionary processes created life?
In a single human body there is 10,000,000,000 (ten billion) miles of DNA, and within that there are over 100 billion sequenced connections. All so perfectly designed that every cell in the human body performs it's function perfectly. If just one of of those connections in a cell was incorrect, it would cease to function. So from a scientific viewpoint, the mathematical probability of a SINGLE CELL coming about by chance is 1/10340,000,000. Which is actually deemed a mathmatical improbability, and this improbability has to be replicated billions of times, by chance (evolution) to make just one human. So, yeah I think the odds are in favour of a creator, an intelligent designer. Or you can just remain ignorant and decieve yourself.

      • +2

"All so perfectly designed that every cell in the human body performs it's function perfectly."

Yep, every human concieved is born and not a single defect in any of those babies, no one develops a defect along the way and everyone dies peacefully from being too perfect.

I wonder why we have so many different species of bats and ants and fish and birds, God must have liked variation, it's why humans come in some many flavours. It's a shame about all those extinct species, those Dinosaurs must have built a tower towards heaven, which as you know pisses off God, so he wiped them out I'm sure. Strange he hasn't got pissed off at the incredibly large towers around the world, the missions to the Moon or the orbiting ISS… it's like God isn't consistent in his teachings.

On his teachings I wonder why God waited so long to let his favoured people know about the correct way to behave, I can't remember the correct form of Christianity that Christ wanted us to follow, was it Catholicism, Protestantism, Eastern Orthodox Church or Oriental Orthodoxy? Oh well, not even those denominations can agree since there are different branches amongst them, and well, that's no surpise since they've been murdering each other in the name of God's peace for two thousand years.

That Intelligent creator is so good, he even come up with tectonic plates, for the earth, yeah it's a shame it creates lots of Earthquakes and Tsunamis killing many millions over history. God is so smart in creating Evolution, you know, he made slight variations as time progressed, which he helped us understand by leaving evidence for us.

Though I find it strange that seeing as we are so perfect as to why our perfect DNA isn't consistent across every human. Shouldn't it be the same if it's perfect? You know, it isn't very distinct from other animals, like mammals, specifically apes. You'd think that being perfect God wouldn't have allowed Homo Sapiens, I mean people, to be able to breed with Neanderthals or Denisovans tens of thousands of years ago before they went extinct. I wonder why he allowed that, no wait, he Intelligently Designed us to add separate species DNAs to ours… but does that make sense if we were and are perfect? Well I'll just blindly accept it, as it must be his perfect plan. Well that is what the man in church says who asks for money at the end of each sermon.

        • -1

You complain God wipe out people. Later you complain God allow certain things. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Both ways you will complain anyway.

        • +2

@gto21: I didn't complain, I love the plan I was taught by my parents and by the Church I went to all my life, I decided I didn't need to open my mind to other possibilities.

I do wonder what would have happened if I was born into a different family. What if the family was one of the other hundred odd Christian faiths? Or perhaps a Jewish family? Or to an Islamic family? Would I have believed in their version of God or since my very specific version of Christianity is the only true one, if I would have found that faith anyway? Oh lord, I'm so glad I wasn't born into a Catholic family.

Well, I'm sure that Pentecostalism is the true faith, I'm just glad it started in the 20th century, in time for me to be born and be part of the true faith. If I was born before that specific version was created roughly 1900 years after Christ was born, I would have been damned to hell.

I guess its all part of his perfect plan to not inform people until about 2,000 years ago what he wanted, and another 1,900 years after that for someone to realise the absolute correct version we should accept.

        • @FabMan: Since you claim to be an atheist in another comment, now said you were from Pentecostalism. You are the living evidence that people do not necessarily follow their family faith. Just like our friend Richard Dawkins who made his argument popular. He goes a bit further - what if you were born in another country? you will be a Muslim, a Buddhist, a Hindu? Without realizing he is the living evidence it's a bad argument. And I guess our friend Richard Dawkins never come across a pew research about conversion rate. Moving to the next point, for you to be damn to hell, you must be doing an unforgivable sin. Can you name me one unforgivable sin in Catholicism?

        • +3

@gto21: The point goes over your head, but then my point was aimed at wozandnic. I typically don't try to argue religion because people aren't open to new ideas, especially over the Internet. That isn't an attack on anyone, people just are like that. My point is at wozandinic who gave terrible math and description of how single cells come to be and described the human body and all its cells as perfect. Unfortunately perfect doesn't exist, and easily seen in the human body. That is ignorance and wishful thinking.

What about all these points I make:

          1) People and their bodies are not perfectly designed, conception fails, embryo's fail, miscarriages and still born's occur, deformities occur during the womb, cells dividing can create mutations and cancers, people develop illnesses and catch diseases and often die in pain or terrified. The human body is amazing, but you can find weaknesses, flaws and vestigial organs. If our bodies and DNA are so perfect, why could humans successfully breed with other animals, such as Neanderthals or Denisovans? If you are have European ancestors, you have Neanderthal DNA mixed in your own, if you have aboriginal or Papa New Guinea ancestors, you have part Densovan DNA. It isn't consistent across the human race either, we aren't perfect, and we share so much DNA with other animals.

          2) Humans have been around a very long time, why did God wait to give proper guidance until 2,000 years ago? All those thousands of years of ignorance, false religions, false Gods and a false ways of living. Why did the one God idea take so long to take hold at all, it was all multi-God religions for a long time around the world, there still is in some places. Even after it appeared, why did it take so long to bring Religion to so many people, such as the aboriginal people of Australia?

          3) Location based or family based religion is obvious for anyone to notice, people are typically educated from birth into a faith, so this perfect person is guided into a faith, worships false idols, simply through ignorance and not malice, never confesses because they are ignorant still and commits an eternal sin to be doomed to eternity in hell, according to Catholics. Of course people change their minds and follow new faiths, otherwise Christianity would never have existed, but you'll typically see families and local regions having a single or similar faith.

          4) You can't blame people for being Atheist, can you? I mean Christianity, Judaism, and Islam all cannot agree what is the true form of worship, they all believe in the one God, but they've all got it different to each other, why is God speaking or guiding the vast majority of his perfect people so poorly? Each of those faiths have different denominations and sects. Even amongst the 'true' believers, they cannot agree what is the true message. There isn't one Christianity, there are many different versions, there are even different versions of Catholicism. They have argued, fought and killed so many of each other for different interpretations of his message. Since there are so many different versions, how can you expect someone to accept your version, your particular brand of coffee (faith) as the one true faith? Billions have it wrong, the vast majority of people, have it wrong, so how can a religious person blame people from walking away from that mess, it's a real shit show.

          5) The bible is a bunch of crap, as there isn't 'a' single bible. If we accept that Jesus existed, and I can accept a person claiming to be a prophet called Jesus existed, you'll find that there isn't a single bible, or even a first bible. There were numerous books, and then people accepted different versions of those books to create their own Christian 'bible'. Constantine, the first Christian (converted) Emperor of the Roman Empire organised the Council of Nicaea, to try and bring Christianity into one, so he gathered many of the numerous sect leaders and bishops to debate and then vote on a new bible. They discarded some of those Christ books as being heretical, altered those they kept to help them form the bible that guided the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church bible wasn't the first bible, as there has never been a 'first' bible or a first singular faith of Christianity. If they had to vote on it, if they had different interpretations all the way back from the beginning, how can we two thousand years later, accept any version as the true version? Because a group of people debated, voted and altered the existing teachings on what it should be? Because the first Christian Roman Emperor, who used the vast fortunes and armies of the of the Roman Empire, that was built and still populated at the time by 'heretics', forced that religion through might across Europe and North Africa? Because they were successful in slaying the numerous 'heretics' over time across Europe who challenged their version? That was until the Printing Press, Martin Luther, Henry VIII and others came along.

I don't understand how Christians can say 'Why don't you people believe in my particular brand of Christianity?'. It's a mess, it always has been, it always will be. I don't have an answer, I just want no part in a voted in bible as guidance to life that is an amendment (New Testament) to a failed first attempt (Old Testament) with the Jews. God really keeps messing up in bringing the message to the people, so how can he be the almighty? Let's face it, it is people manipulation and control.

I just thank god for people like John Locke.

        • -1

@FabMan: I also don't try to debate people on the internet since people are here just to debate. They already made up their mind. I ignore most people commenting. I only commented on yours to point out the inconsistency in your argument. "Complaining" God wipe out people. Later "complaining" God allows certain things to happen. Both ways you end up complaining anyway. That's the longest diversion tactics I've ever read. I can't see the answer to my question. Since its all diversion, I'll keep it short. So we can go back to my question. Everyone will be judged by what has been revealed to them even read Romans 1. The Council of Nicaea did not decide the NT Canon. https://www.michaeljkruger.com/ten-basic-facts-about-the-nt-…. I'm trying to address your question of sect. But you diverted and did not answer my question. Can you name me one unforgivable sin in Pentecostalism or Catholicism? If you can't name one just say you can't name one instead of writing 7 paragraph and not answer the question. I'm highly likely to ignore your message if you divert again.

        • @gto21: I wasn't complaining as I was mocking the mentality of people claiming God is good or God is blah blah. I'm not complaining about God since he is an invention of those trying to control people who are confused and afraid of their existence.

As for your question, I never mentioned an Unforgivable Sin, you did, I mentioned Hell, and you said it requires an Unforgivable Sin. As far as I'm aware, one Unforgivable Sin in Catholicism is Final Impenitence, not confessing your sins before you die, which numerous people don't do. Thankfully since it's all made up, we just face oblivion whether you are moral or immoral.

It's not a diversion tactic, though conviently you've ignored numerous points and questions I've made. I know you won't try to debate them.

          -Edit-
As for the Council of Nicaea, I'll go investigate more into it. Numerous sources give the information about that Council, if I find credible information to the contrary of my current understanding, I'll accept it.

        • +1

Well Fabman, I guess you are just right. Because as you point out, there is sickness and death, that rules out there being a creator. No you must be right, the glorious and magnificent wonder of all creation "just happened" against every conceivable mathmatical impossibility, it happened, not just once but hundreds of millions of times! An impossible creation, like fairytale magic! And then we evolved so far, by magic, to have conciousness and morallity. For what? Why should we ascribe to any form of moral? What's the point? One random cluster of cells competing against another in this perfect yet pointless universe.
Your view makes so much sense. Thankyou.

        • @FabMan: I don't really want to debate to be honest since I'm busy and tired from work. If I still remember your message. Your first point was something on DNA, as I never make claim DNA is perfect I did not read since I thought you're addressing someone else point. Another point is wrong since that not what Roman teaches. And what you said on the Council of Nicaea is also wrong. I'm not sure what's to debate on those points. As for your last message; bad things happening or evil happening is not evidence of not having a good God or God is an invention. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k64YJYBUFLM&list=PL3gdeV4Rk9… and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxj8ag8Ntd4&index=8&list=PL3…. If your interested those two videos are not too long. And I'm too tired to explain it myself. And for your final point on Catholicism. Unless you can prove they are practicing an unforgivable sin. You won't be able to prove 100% they will go to hell. Pentecostalism and Catholicism have enough core doctrines to be saved. I believe they both got some secondary doctrines wrong. But that does not mean one group will go to hell. I have some doubt on a Catholic theologian, but even for them unless it's an unforgivable sin according to them the Bible, we can't tell for sure. I'm not Pentecostal or Catholic, however, they have enough core doctrine to be saved. Although I don't agree with all their doctrines.

        • @gto21:

wozandnic brought up DNA, that is who I commented on when you interjected.

You say you are not going to debate then you go on a tirade, I won't read it since you won't debate.

        • @wozandnic:

Magic is what religious people believe in, an invisible all knowing, all creating being because their minds will not comprehend the large randomness and emptiness. The Catholic Church accepts the big bang and evolution, so if you aren't Catholic but are Christian your religion is a splinter of a religion developed to fill in where Judaism failed. A patch to a patch of a religion. If your religion can evolve, maybe you can too!

        • @wozandnic: I used to believe in those things when I was younger. Since posting those deals. I realize the atheist don't have any good argument. All they talk about is Evolution and big bang. Its call the theory of evolution, its not even a law. Theory and even laws has been proven wrong in the past. They believe everything is created out of nothing. If your going to believe in things like Dark matter, dark energy, evolution and everything is created out if nothing. You have no ground to critize theism.

        • @gto21: Oh you are ignorant on this matter, please uneducate yourself, go look up what Theory is in the context of science. You lack basic knowledge on this matter.

I made numerous points that you ignored because you don't even want to challenge your beliefs. A fundamental difference between us is, I'm happy to be proved wrong, I just require evidence. There is actual evidence proving you wrong, and you refuse to even study it.

I'm a fool for discussing any of this with you.

        • -1

@FabMan: I replied to "wozandnic". Not to you. You said you won't read my message. Make up your mind. Next minute you read my message and replied when I was not even replying to you.

        • @gto21: Your God approve of you acting like a child?

        • @FabMan: that's a lot of replying for someone who claim not reading my messages. I'm getting bored now, enjoy the remaining of your week.

        • +1

@FabMan: Psalm 14 vs 1, pretty much has you covered my good sir.

    • "How do you explain our present day observation of other Galaxies. For example: The closest known galaxy to us is the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy, at 236,000,000,000,000,000 km (25,000 light years) from the Sun. (This is sourced from NASA). If the age of the universe was 12,000 years or less, we shouldn’t be able to see any other galaxies. For those curious you can measure the distances to distant objects by using basic trigonometry. And this is something you can do at home if you have the right equipment."

Starlight and Time by Russell Humpries (a nuclear historicist I think)for an alternative theory. https://www.amazon.com/Starlight-Time-Russell-Humphreys-Ph-D…

"According to the bible, God created the universe in 6 days. This includes all life. And yet the bible makes no mention of T-rex or any other spectacular dinosaurs. "

      So what is your question?

"According to the bible if you are not baptised you cannot enter heaven (John 3:5)."

And the text actually says: "Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. " If you are going to
quote the Bible then do that and don't just post your interpretation of what you are posting.

"This includes new born babies who die before being baptised."

Can you post the text about new born babies or are you making another false assumption? Post the proof text and then we can better answer your question.

"Stoning a woman to death. Because she wasn’t a virgin on her wedding night. Deuteronomy 22:13-21. Have a read."

OK, cherry-picking isolated verses from half way through the narrative isn't really helping your case. What ELSE happened?

"Jesus lived by these rules/guidelines. While he lived as a mortal man. This is what he believed was just and appropriate. Because if he wanted to, he could have demanded this be changed. Yet it’s still there in the bible."

Ummmm, dude, he DID change all of that, well OK he couldn't change what came before him, especially 1000 years or so prior to his birth. But fulfilling all of those laws WAS THE WHOLE REASON FOR HIS INCARNATION IN THE FIRST PLACE. Just once it would be nice to be challenged by an unbeliever who has actually read the whole Bible, understood it and can raise legitimate points of objection. :)

      • As tempting it is to answer you points. The fact of the matter is. It's all just a waste of time. I don't have any real expectation that I could convince you of my point of view and visa versa. So I've resigned myself to not try. I just wanted to point out some of what I see as illogical frames of thinking which is required to reconcile beliefs to the observable universe. Having said that. I will have a look into Russell Humpries as you suggested, although admittedly with a critical and sceptical eye. As with any new information I receive. I genuinely hope your beliefs bring you joy and comfort.

    • @bluechan, you ask an interesting question as to whether the six days were 24 hour periods as we understand them today.
One problem with both your question, and how some Christians interpret those first few chapters of Genesis, is that God created time, presumably at some stage in the 'six days'. I struggle with trying to understand the concept of a 'day' before time existed, but learning to read the Bible in context and how to apply it using these credo courses wouldn't be a bad place to start.

      • That's an often asked question and while some people interpret 'day' to be 'some indeterminate amount of time', the 'days' (in Genesis) are quite clearly defined, "And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day. etc etc) 'Evening' and 'Morning' are concepts we can all understand as relating to a normal 24hour day cycle. Whether you believe Genesis is another question but the language used (when there were alternatives available) was quite unambiguous. 'Time' I presume was created on the first day, though it does imply a different kind of time before that as well. For one thing to proceed from the next we assume time must exist so if there was a time when God existed before the universe then he acted to create the universe (and time as we kinda think we understand it) then some 'time' must have passed. Fascinating stuff that we probably wont ever be able to answer, nor is it necessary too IMO. :)

        • Genesis 1:5, for example, will be 12 hours. Genesis 1:8 - 24 hours. Genesis 2:4 - 6 days. If God created Adam with age, for instance, he had a body of 12 years old or a 30 years old, he might have created everything with age. From one verse to another you might also have a time gap. It does not mean the events are happening straightaway. For example in Genesis 1:1 to 1:2. And we have to determine if science is correct as well. The assumption is the law of physics has not changed. You can also consider if Genesis is literal or symbolic. It can also be symbolic since the audience is Jews thousands of years ago. Both ways I don't really care if young earth or old earth, many variances we must take into consideration.

    • Science and faith are two different things. Science tells us there were dinosaurs? Great. There were dinosaurs. Science tells us evolution is real? Great. Evolution is real.

Did God create the world in 7 days? What's a day to God? Was the meaning of the word lost in translation?

Bottom line is, if science tells us something, we don't ignore it. This whole science vs religion argument is getting old. Science show us how. Faith shows us who we are.

"But how do you explain kids getting cancer?"

I don't have all the answers. As you grow in faith, you learn more about God. Everyone's relationship with God is different, and your relationship with God changes all the time. At this point in my life, I know that God is not a genie or a good luck charm. I don't blame God for everything bad that happens to someone. That's childish. I pray, yes. I ask God to look after the sick and the elderly, but I also ask God to give me the strength to do these things because I can't do it on my own steam, and God needs hands. What does this have to do with science? Nothing at all.
