Negging for problems with the retailer.
Ring side girls get paid more than female fighters and fighters under new agreements lost a crap load of sponsorships, which was the lifeblood of starters.
    Jk about the neg.

    • +7

Well the ring side girls are much hotter than the actual female fighters so…

      • +1

There only job is being hot so they would want to be. They also won't be getting hit in the head.

      • +8

        Have you seen Paige VanZant?

        • +3

          Or Michelle Waterson?

          Or Claudia Ghadalia?

        • +7

          @Diji1: or Cris Cyborg?

oh wait, I don't think I'm doing this right..

        • +2

Woah I just looked her up…

Her pretty face would knock me out any day lol

    • +4

      Its called supply and demand.

      • really hard to find somebody to hold up a round number??

        • -3

Yeah I bet if you went on, they would love you.

In fact, why don't you go and replace runway models as well! They get paid a lot to simply put some clothes on and walk up and down for 15 seconds.

    • +3

this is a way too simplistic view of things. you can't compare the (reported) ring girl salaries vs. the minimum fight salaries as they represent totally different situations.
Ring girls get ~35-55k per annum for a LOT of hours. Minimum UFC contract is 12.5k to show and 12.5k to win per fight. 3 fights guaranteed per year, if you want them / can handle it.
Also they get full health insurance coverage and all medical bills for injury related surgeries covered (this is worth 10's of thousands in the US, especially for a professional athlete where injuries are common and can mean career ending).
They also get the shitty reebok sponsorship and other payments for media and promotional work they do. A no-name fighter wouldn't be getting more than the reebok pay for some shitty logo on their fight shorts, lol. They are free to pursue sponsorship outside of attire in ring btw. most don't because only the top dogs attract any money for it.
Yes the fighters could be getting more and should be. But comparing them to the ring girls is foolish.

      • high level.
Average 'reported' median pay for fighters ~$45-55k girls get paid on the lower end.
Female fighters don't get paid enough.

I would assume fighters train for longer hours.
Fighters need to pay their camps $.

Yes no a direct correlation but damn to be paid that much to get hit in the face.

        • Female fighters don't get paid enough.

Low level Female fighters aren't a draw card for viewers. Rousey proved that when she got paid a metric shitload

    • +3

      Gotta disagree
Ring girls should be paid more, they are part of the branding of the UFC and have been around in some instances for years. Arianny and Britney are good examples of people that form part of the image, similar to Bruce Buffer.

Female Fighters on average might get less, but then if you consider that the ones getting paid less than the ring girls are often the starters. Top female fighters get far more. Look at Ronda Rousey when she was around. Fighters in the UFC are paid what the promotion believes they bring in. A female fighter in her first fight stands to earn show+win, reebok sponsorship money + whatever else they can get outside the UFC for being a UFC fighter. The revenue a new (male or female) fighter generates for the UFC is likely far less than what the UFC pays them.

The lost sponsorship inside the cage was a big deal, but disproportionately so for the higher paid fighters. No one is lining up to pay someone with no name in their first fight in the UFC more than what they are getting under the new deal. Most fighters have reported issues with getting sponsors and its not uncommon to see the prelim type fighters go into fights either unsponsored or having to chase up shitty sponsors later.

Finally, these are prize fighters. The guys who are starting out often coach, run businesses or have a job outside of the UFC. This is a career where if you lose a fight you could lose your job, especially if you're just starting out.

      • More than happy for Bruce Buffer to go. I always miss the start if fights trying to avoid that pain.

Lose Bruce Buffer and the ring girls, start fights faster, and give the extra income to starter wages.

    • +4

I'm so smart that I cannot see how dumb that makes me look!

      • Fair cop. Thanks Diji1 for having the decency to respond :-)
I thought UFC was a guilty pleasure for some of us. At least it is real.

        • Sometimes I wonder whether it's human to encourage people to suffer for our entertainment. But UFC seems far less injury-prone than many other sports including boxing and NRL. Yet it provides a gladiator-like feel due to the chance of a lot of blood :)

    • +1

      Yeah, nah, wrong.

  • +3

This is pretty awesome news! Main reason that it's being broadcast is because Bobby Knuckles is the current Middleweight champ and coach for the upcoming TUF

    • +2

      Or that he is Australian.

      • Yeah he's a New Zealand born Australian at that

    • +2

Main reason that it's being broadcast is because

What? Fox didn't renew their UFC broadcasting rights so ESPN bought it.

That is the reason Ch 10 has it.

      • ahhh didn't think about Fox dropping it, fair point. And yep, forgot to say that he's Aussie

  • +3

Begins airing tonight from 9:30pm by the way.

  • +5

A TV broadcast is not a deal imo

    • +2

      The barrel is getting scraped

    • +5

I can see your point but what about this?

UFC fans have to pay (or find other means) to watch this in the past. To now be able to watch it on free-to-air is a deal to me.

      • -1

Agree completely. First thing I thought of.

It's more of a public announcement than a deal.

        Love your work otherwise.

  • +1

How good was the reapers last fight!

    • +2

Travelled across America for 2 months and had my last night in Chicago watching that event. Great fight

      • +1

You are a very lucky bugger and to see Tai Tuivasa beat Andre Arlovski too

        • +1

Hahaha I met him at the fighters hotel, he signed my passport and wrote 'sikunt'

        • Hahaha thats classic sikunt……………..you should have given him your shoe
          Tai Shooey Vasa

    • -1

Try it. You may feel dirty, but there is a primal urge. Same as for real cock-fighting.
Even if you still hate it, you'll love watching it.
To really experience it though, you need to be in an audience, not home watching TV.

Sorry for those insecure & inarticulate fans who negged instead of answering.

      • +1

As much as I like watching it live, it's great watching it on TV (depending on the commentator). The view can become obscured by the cage live which means you can spend a bit of time looking at the screen anyway

That being said, I'll get to any even I can, been fortunate enough to see the following live:
        Rockhold v Bisping 1
UFC 193 (the dethroning of Roussey)
UFC 196 (So glad Diaz and Tate won)
        Whittaker v Brunson

      • +1

lol I felt like a Roman watching gladiators my first time. Then I realised that there are a LOT of rules making it a relatively safe sport. It's only occasionally that someone will get their head pounded, unlike boxing which happens every time you get in the ring.

    • +2

It may look like arm and legs flying around with the hope that something lands but there is a lot of technique and skill involved. If you practice martial arts, you will know.

      • +1

Kind of like a game of chess, except with 4 ounce gloves and arm bars

  • +2

TUF has been really bad the past seasons but watching this because its on free to air and hopefully ten buys some fight nights or similar because of good ratings .

    • TUF hasn't been interesting in a long time now, which is bound to happen once you've done 27 seasons of a show with the same format. They need to just focus their efforts on Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series instead.

Also i hope none of these rights deals affect streaming UFC on Fightpass. The sooner the UFC fully embraces their streaming service and puts all their content, including PPV, on there for a monthly fee the better.

"Yes. Chuck sports programming on a SD channel. This is how our network recovers."

MMA is mainstream now. You'd think they'd be chomping at the bit to put this on their main 10 HD feed…

    • It's TUF. It's 85% reality TV show drama. There's a two round exhibition fight at the end of each show but in a much more camera friendly situation than regular events. It's not really a sports broadcast.

      • +2

The release that went out says they're doing some live events too, including the Adelaide card in December.

        • Fair point then.

      • camera friendly situation

        Uriah Hall vs. Adam Cella
        Jon Madsen vs. Abe Wagner
        Edwin DeWees vs. Gideon Ray

        • +1

Yes, those fights were shot in a camera friendly situation where they could flood the place with light, have a wall in the background instead of a muddly dark mess, didn't have to worry about the cameramen blocking the view of the audience and could edit it together with the best shots later instead of doing it on the fly.

        • @DonWilson: Ahh, I see what you mean. Not necessarily the content, but the editing / camera focus etc. ' ;)

    • +1

It sucks that they canned One HD for Ten HD… :/

Yea, because I want to watch The Batchelor in HD rather than fast action sports. smh

      • I agree with making their main channel the HD one. I just don't understand the programming. They put so much of their expensive content on One (and Eleven) whilst Ten HD is having a talk show, or something else non-rating drawing. Just makes no sense.

  • Any idea if this will go on their app? (I don't have my antenna plugged in so as I don't watch the news and see adults who should know better in uncaged fighting called politics :))

  • Haven't watched channel 10 in a while. Can you watch online?

    • Yes, through Freeview or smart device app.

      • Their app is atrocious… So grateful for sbs and abc, when I see what the commercial networks do. Constant lag/stutter; ads repeating; jumping feed. Ouch

    • You can view on your computer browser or on TV using chromecast.
