Shure SE846 Blue Edition - $888 (Was $1495) @ Addicted to Audio

160

I noticed this while buying an amplifier at Addicted To Audio.
This is a great (and lucky) price for an amzaing set of IEMs and the lowest price I've found for local stock.

I've had a pair of these for over a year and believe they're worth a lot more than $888.
With the included yellow tips, you can't hear any external noise even if you play music at a low volume.
I kind of wish I had the blue version but the clear version was $6 cheaper at the time so I got that instead ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I drive mine just fine with the headphone jack on my Xperia XZ Premium but they benefit from a better DAC/AMP like an AudioQuest DragonFly, etc.

I know we hate product review on OzBargain, but here are some reviews:

I bought a pair of Shure SE535's from them earlier in the year. Sensational bit of gear, absolutely love them.

    • I bought a pair of SE535's from them a few years ago as well and completely agree!

      • I'm contemplating buying a small amp for them to use with my phone. Will be interesting to see if it makes a noticeable difference.

      • same bought one 535 from them as well. it is just so good.
846 is a bit too much bass for me, tried in the store super nice staff.
also, the red version seems to use different drivers, and results even better sound overall the regular version.

however, for the almost 1k price range, that is where custom made IEM starts personalize channel mold, way better seal.

OwO what's this? The chinese will appreciate this :3

Still using my UE TripleFi 10 from 5-6 years ago. Those $99 Black Friday deals…

    • Im about to dust mine off after sitting in the draw for a bit.
I picked up a Dragonfly Black to drive them since the standard audio on the Pixel2 is very disappointing

      • Yeah the TripleFi 10 need some extra grunt. They really came alive with the FIIO X5. Shame the shell of one of the earphones snapped in half recently. Got 8 years out of them though, with I could find another pair.

        • You can still find them, just not for the bargain price you did.

Amazon (US) have a fair few sellers that still stock the older models.

        • They definitely sound good off a powered source.
I play FLAC files through my Aune USB adac/amp and they sound amazing.

Damn, there might be some small sellers that still stock them

    • I ran over my 6yo triplefis. Was devastated that unused replacements are basically unobtanium these days :(

Jesus Christ that's a lot of money to spend on headphones….my uneducated ears are totally happy with my few $50 sets.

    • Mine are happy with the $0.30 bluetooth pair that I got off Amazon recently!

They are a great store, IMHO. With great prices. I got most of my home theater speakers from them. The last sale they had on the Kef Q series was probably the lowest ever. Good comms too - I did email prior to an order to check stock and they did respond promptly.

    • Yeah agree. They were the only place I could find that allow you to listen to in ear headphones.

      • FYI Minidisc Australia allows you to do this too. Been buying from them for years.

They've got an office near Chatswood station.

Cheers mate. That is actually more convenient for me.

    Shure is expensive!

  • +2

These are so worth it. I paid over a grand and no regrets after years of satisfying listening.

    • +1

My only regret is not doing this much, much earlier.
Our hearing gets worse with age, so the sooner you buy something like this, the better!

i thought this was ozbargain…not oz millionaires.

    • +7

bargains turn us into millionaires eventually

      • only if you sell them on. can't become a millionaire by spending money only.. :)

    • There’s a website idea right there.

  • +1

Love shure but think the se215's are expensive. You ppl are bonkers

It might sound 'good', but this is pretty obsolete given it is over 4 years old. If you are going to pay $1k you should be looking at the latest application of audio drivers like the new announced Sony IER-M7.

    • +3

The Sony IER-M7 from a quick search uses balanced armature drivers, how is that "latest application of audio drivers" going to be better than the Shure (which also uses balanced armature drivers)?

In the world of audio, newer does not necessarily mean better.

    • +2

Headphones don't really become obsolete right now. This may change thanks the tech companies getting rid of the headphone jack. Bluetooth and usb protocols become obsolete.

  • +4

How do these compare with the $5 pair from Kmart? Haha jeez thats a lot of money but I am sure they are incredible.

    • +3

They are about 177.6 times more expensive, and 1000x better audio quality, so 5x the value.

    • Worth like $5 for someone earning at least $400k a year . The rich always gets the best :)

    • I find the KZ OEMs similar to these at a fraction of the cost at $50

      • You compared the KZs to the SE846 side by side and they sound similar?

Where is Broden when you need him?

    • +2

Last I saw, he was preaching about reusable plastic bags in the forums. Broden has changed.

  • +2

Might be a good price but at this price point aren't you in the realm the of having ear impressions done? I don't understand not having a custom fit at this price point

    • +1

100% agree. If you're going to drop nearly $1k on in-ears, you might as well get customs from Alclair or 64 Audio (or whoever).

      • +2

Don't forget that customs will mainly get you a more comfortable fit - audio quality is still primarily determined by the drivers and associated components. High-end universals would sound better than entry-level customs.

        • I largely agree, but the better fit helps things stop sounding tinny. Even a good speaker with bad fit doesn't sound good. $888 seems a lot for a generic moulded shape.

Having said that, I bought my top of the line customs on sale at $870. There are more options these days running up to $2k or beyond, although I'd think incremental improvements in speakers are outweighed by individual sound preference at that price range.

I remember being blown away by my customs on first use, but they suit my individual preference in sound. YMMV.

        • @justtoreply:

That's where Comply comes in. ;)

Yeah, individual preferences play a big role. The higher-end customs do have nice features though, like a built-in bass attenuator and tougher connectors like the screw-on ones on the JH16v2.

I remember being blown away by my customs on first use, but they suit my individual preference in sound. YMMV.

Same here, I was blown away when I finally got mine fitted correctly (took about 5 attempts). I tried the SE846 in Japan and while it sounded good, I didn't like certain aspects of it. I can't remember what though!

But being totally honest, I actually prefer the sound of the ATH M50X when connected to a specific DAC and amp. Cheaper, just not portable. :)

        • @eug: > But being totally honest, I actually prefer the sound of the ATH M50X when connected to a specific DAC and amp. Cheaper, just not portable. :)

I agree. I prefer my 600Ohm DT880 hooked up to my schiit stack, but doesn't sound so good bringing open cans to work or on the flights, etc :)

But how do they compare to the xiaomi pistons?

  • +1

Since discovering the latest generation of "Chi-Fi" I can't see myself ever spending more than $100 on earphones ever again let alone close to $1000.
Would love to get a comparison between these and my current favourite multi drivers IEMs:
    1. KZ ZS10
    2. RevoNext RN-QT2
    3. Tin Audio T2
    4. SenFer XBA-6in1

    • which one is the best? I have only got QT2

      • +1

Hard to pick one out as a clear favourite. The QT2 are great for the sub-bass effect, especially for electronic music. The Tin Audio has a flat sound signature and good soundstage so I like them for discovering the discrete details in the music. Senfer 6in1 are good for heavier music but it has more of a V-shaped sound and there is sibilance in some songs.

On balance I like the KZ ZS10 because it has good sound separation, clear details, and a very capable low-end bass. It could be psychological of course since it is the one with the most drivers.

        • thanks just bought Tin after your comments

  • Very, very tempted.

    • +1

Just do it man! Seriously, no regrets here and I upgraded from a decent SE535 :)

Remember, every day we age, our hearing gets a little worse, the sooner you get a nice headset, the more you'll get to enjoy it!

      • It's just the colour that's holding me back right now.

      • And also I’m wondering if the SE425 are adequate for me? Catch are selling them for $328 and I just found them at Mannys for $279.

        Decisions decisions

        • +1

I haven't tried the SE425 but a friend has it. Pro tip* - if you find the attached tips won't come off, put the headset in a plastic bag sealed, put it in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes, take it out again and you should be able to remove the tips. It's a known issue apparently.

          *no pun intended

It's just the colour that's holding me back right now.

Your ears can't see the difference ;)

        • @idonotknowwhy:

But I have green eyes and you know what they say about blue and green!

I am going to see if there is anywhere in Brisbane that has a demo set to try. If the 846s are noticeably better, I will get them. If not, I will be getting a cheaper set.

        • +1

@gasman70: Good idea. I'm not from Brisbane but I use the yellow foam tips, which I replace them pretty regularly (I'm a wax factory).

I buy my replacements from here: https://brisound.com.au/
I assume the bris = Brisbane and that they'll stock the headsets as well as the tips.

        • @idonotknowwhy:

          15 minutes from me…perfect!

        • @gasman70: Cool. Let me know what you think when you compare them!

        • @idonotknowwhy:

I haven't contacted them but it looks like they only stock the SE215, SE425 and SE535.
