Half Life 2: Episode 2 is currently 75% off on Steam. I'm not quite sure when it started, or when it ends, but for $2 I think it's a great price for those who don't already have it.
You do not need Half Life 2 to purchase, it is stand alone. It's much better than Episode 1, in my opinion, and at $2 it's hard to go wrong.

Nope but Valve is not the sort of developer to cancel a game especially one with the name Half Life in it. I reckon we'll hear some news after Portal 2.
Wouldn't surprise me if we see Episode 3 canned in favour of moving straight to Half Life 3 at this stage. Just hope the wait isn't as long as Duke Nukem Forever…
It's best to stop waiting and let Valve release it in their own time.

except during development ep1,2, were reffered to as Half Life 3
they said they didn't want fans to wait 6 years after half life 2 to wait for the next one, so thats why they released it as episodes.
but i guess they might still do Half Life 3, or just make episode 3 really long and epic
Do you need to have played Ep1 for Ep2 to make sense?
kind of yes. since its a direct continuation, the story flows much better. but if you just play and take it as the world is getting owned by aliens and you gotta save everyone, thats fine too :)
